--From Scream Factory's Facebook Page--

*PACKAGING UPDATE ON COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS GOING FORWARD*

Hey there guys! We are implementing a packaging policy change effective with films released this month and beyond that we need to share with you. Initially it was our intention that our Scream Factory “Collector’s Series” slipcover would be constant throughout its lifecycle. However since then we (and some of you) have learned that our best laid plans have been met with manufacturing, production and logistics problems. The easiest solution to this, of course, would be to discontinue making slipcovers altogether…but we threw that notion out quick as we like them and we know you do too. Still, a change of plans was needed and after discussing many options, we have landed on the following:

- Our "CE" series will still have slipcovers as normal, but they will now only be produced for the initial shipment that generally makes up the new release phase (generally 2-3 months from its release date). Past this time period, your chances of receiving one are still good but only while supplies last. What this means is that if you order a CE title directly from us in this new release time period you will be guaranteed to receive a slipcover. For example: You purchase a CE title like Night of the Comet in a few weeks (streets 11/19) you’ll get one, but we can’t guarantee you will if you wait for a sale a year later. Also to add, in the rare occasion that your slipcover is damaged in transit from our website’s warehouse to you we will replace it as we have always done. Note: Multi-film collection sets in the Scream brand (like our Amityville and Vincent Price ones) will always have their slipcases.

- Our outside retailer/online partners will also be shipped CE titles with slipcovers. Although we cannot 100% guarantee that you will receive them from these accounts (based on some of their merchandising policies which we can’t control), your odds are still strongly in your favor that you will and most already send as is.

- To further help minimize slipcovers being removed in its lifecycle, we will be starting to shrink-wrap over them starting in the new year with the first release being CAT PEOPLE on 1/21.

We hope that you understand that we continue to do whatever we can to provide the best Scream Factory “experience” possible, which includes meeting your expectations with the quality of the films from the mastering to the packaging. You, our avid and passionate supporters, are very important to us and so by changing our policy here, our goal is to provide you with a much easier, certain and positive experience in the long run.

Thank you,

Scream Factory

I'm glad they are at least limiting the slipcovers and, hopefully, they will eventually phase them out altogether. We need to ween people off of these cheap packaging gimmicks.

I don't normally care for slips, but I do like what SF does with them. I like flipping the artwork in the case, then having the slip with the new art so I can see them both. I think that's pretty darn cool.

And now we'll have complaints that the shrinkwrapping was too tight and damaged the slipcover.

Unless the shrinkwrapping is loose; I remember another US company doing that, maybe Olive? It's also common to see that method used on European releases. It does resolve the issue they've had with retailers removing slips when they've asked them not too. But even without shrinkwrapping slipcovers can still be prone to damage especially if poorly packed.

With slipcovers being shrinkwrapped it does beg the question why they're limiting the slips to the first run. They no longer would have to worry about people complaining about not getting a slip with that method. I'm guessing it's costing them too much money to continue to provide them on all pressings. Now if only I could find their releases in store.

EDIT: A lot of the damage done to slipcovers through online orders appear to have been cased by the slipcover slipping partially off of the case during transit. In which case the corners of the slip are easily crushed. With shrinked slipcovers that issue should be eliminated or at least minimized.

I think it's kind of absurd that this disclaimer was even needed in the first place. Isn't that the way all slipcovered releases work?

As I understood, SF was previously producing slipcovers for are pressing and not just limiting them to the first run like other studios. The issue with people not getting slipcovers with their orders was primarily due to retailers removing the slipcovers, and throwing them away, or customers returning a product sans slip. Then the retailer would return unsold product back to the manufacturer and the slipless product was put back into cuirculation.

I Would much rather have Scream Factory do away with slipcovers and start making booklets like how Arrow does.

Yeah I thought it was odd when SF said they would have continuous slipcovers with Collector's Editions even after the 'first pressing'. Glad they are doing slipcovers the same way everyone else does with the first shipments.

I assumed the Slips were limited anyway? Lol.

Whatevs, I do like that they'll be shrinkwrapped, not so much that they'll be "less-available". I don't like the idea of having 50 Collector's Editions with Slips, then one withouth. But those are the breaks...

I agree with this 100%. I like the slipcovers, but sometimes I just can't/don't want to jump on a film immediately after release. It sucks that by limiting the slipcovers to only first pressings it's going to become even harder trying to find one on the 2nd hand market. I still can't believe that with the amount of hoopla over these slips that Scream doesn't just have an additional 100-250 produced and then sold through the website. Scream could stop guaranteeing that copies of the movie will come with a slip, and then could simply sell one to people looking for replacements if they care.

Even with all of that said however, removing slips and going for the short bio/essay booklet ala Criterion/Arrow would be my prefered "extra" of choice over a slip anyways.

Do you think if they did away with slips, some people would stop buying their releases altogether? Hopefully it wouldn't be a lot of people, but I am assuming there's a handful out there that buy the releases just because of the packaging with the film secondary.

So Shout replaces slipcovers if they're damaged during shipping? I had no idea. I need to get my Day of the Dead slip replaced.

I think shrink wrapping the slips is a good idea, that way damage is less-likely and retailers who use to throw them out, can't anymore, although I've only heard of this, never seen it myself.

Damage from shrink wrapping? If any, I think all we'll find is that excess cardboard at the top and bottom might curve from the wrap being tight. And really that's a blessing as we won't find rips and tears as much anymore.

Ironically, I purchase every single release through Amazon and I've never received a damaged slip. The only time I got a slip with any rips or tears in it was when I ordered from "Shout!/Scream Factory" directly when "Lifeforce" was on sale for a day.
