Yes, Slasher Boom as in the wave of slasher movies produced after the success of Halloween, in the 1980s.

I'm saying Independent films were distributred, well, Independently.

The bigger studios really didn't want to touch horror films unless they were classy or artsy. Not saying they wouldn't, but the Slasher wave brought independent, low-budget, horror films to the big screen, commonly via larger studios.

Hell, My Bloody Valentine was picked up by Paramount, so was Friday The 13th for that matter. Ten years before, or even Five, they'd die before putting out "those kind" of films.

Everything from Sleepaway Camp to Witchboard to Die Monster Die to The Incredible Melting Man - its already diverse and it should stay that way

And then the term *better* films is purely subjective. Many would say Suspiria, which was on Screams radar is a better film than most slashers, but then a die hard slasher movie lover would say 'hold the phone just a minute!'
Personally speaking I prefer Dario Argento films over slashers and overall they can be considered better films (and bigger budgeted) but that doesnt mean I dislike 80s cheesy slashers
Well that's what I am afraid of, Code red taking care of the more obscure stuff. I do like Scream's other films but I want more slashers to be released.

Before major studios would rarely touch them, now look.

The Slasher film made horror mainstream. Doesn't make it the best sub-genre.
But I would argue any day that its the most important.

And as far as "If slasher films never came about we still would have horror films being made from the mid 80s 'til now", true.

But Exorcist 3, bye-bye. Psycho II and III. Adios.
Horror would have went in a completely different direction.

And for "I don't count monster films as slashers. I also heavily disagree that films from the mid to late 80s and especially the 90s were directly influenced by slashers."

King Kong isn't a Slasher. Neither is Godzilla or Rodan.
But Pumpkinhead is a slasher. All the elements are there, except for a "masked killer", which is actually there, just in a different, non-literal form.

But, like it or not, the Slasher film was a MAJOR influence on the direction horror took, in the late 80s and early 90s. Its arguably still influencing people. Not directly, like back then, but its still a popular subgenre and filmmakers are always looking for a new take on it.
I'll meet you halfway and say that yes, the slashers might have gave horror films a bit of a boost during that decade and point in time where the genre might have been winding down with audiences. As far as major studios rarely touching them, Universal and their lineup of famous monsters were huge back then. Not to mention the numerous other horror films from that era that were fairly well known for their time. I'm talking about all the sci-fi/horror alien films as well as the numerous giant bug type films. When it came to slashers, I think they exploded simply because it was a bit different than your normal monster films and the big reason, much like the Paranormal Activity series, they were relatively cheap to make so it wouldn't be too hard to make their money back or a profit.

"But Exorcist 3, bye-bye. Psycho II and III. Adios.
Horror would have went in a completely different direction."

Although I enjoyed Exorcist 3, Psycho II and III never being made wouldn't have necessarily been a bad thing since they're cash grab sequels...which is why I don't care for slasher films because the majority of the ones created were sequels. As for horror going in a different direction if slasher films never came about. I can't say for sure of course, but that might have been a good thing since there are different types of good to great horror films in the 90s up to today that weren't influenced by slasher films.

Why would anyone WANT Code Red to release anything?!

I get saying, oh well they have it, I'll buy it. But to rather have Code Red's version of something, wow...

Let's remember Code Red lost Walter Olsen, who now runs Scorpion Releasing.
Since then they have gone down hill quite a bit.
Hopefully, CR will get better with those issues though.

Slasher movies seem to be the basis on which many horror movies are derived from so it's kind of silly to dismiss them outright.
I like Scream and it was very popular, but I would not say it reinvented anything, just revived these films for a very brief period in the late 1990s. The self referential humor everyone seemed so amazed at back in 1996 had already been done ten years prior in Friday the 13th part 6.

Haha.

Seriously the whole of the 80s is slasher films in different shapes and sizes.
When the man kills teens sub-genre wasn't selling tickets they just changed the man to a monster, a robot, a ghost, etc. They all had the slasher elements, distinguishing them from the prior "versions" of their respective films.

They were slashers masquerading as other types of films.

Yeah. Next year, they have no slashers planned.
-Bad Dreams / Visiting Hours
-The Slumber Party Massacre
-Sleepaway Camp

Four slashers announced already... Quit complaining.

And this year there was:
-Crawlspace
-The Horror Show
-X-Ray/Schizoid
-The Burning
-The Town That Dreaded Sundown
-Phantasm II
-Prison

And last year:
-Halloween II
-The Funhouse
-Terror Train

That's a good portion of their library.

I am not complaining, I am like most of the people here in this thread "hoping" for some titles that they want.

Code Red won't be getting any of my business directly after hearing some of the horror stories.

I know Code Red has this rep but Bill's shipping and image quality for his titles have been really great at least for me. If Scream released the same titles as Code Red , the question would be - would Scream still make enough to get the titles that they have gotten us.
I don't want any distributor to fail because each one has a certain niche of titles that they get be it budgetary reasons or otherwise.
Bill works by himself as far as I know and he not only gets issues from outside the USA members, but even the forum members start fighting amongst each other over titles which is silly because we all like them

I was referring to the fact that Bill Olsen is an a-hole.
I'm glad he's releasing films, even if they are limited, offer no tracking, and are only sold from his site, at higher prices than they should be.

But he's not a pleasant person. Even blasting peoples personal shipping info for all the world to see, just because he's mad.
