Back on the topic of 4K Movie Releases, when will the next public unveiling of UHD BD occur? Looking forward to any information so I can plan my purchases accordingly

Relax Adrian. It was a 10 sec. aside to a joint organization collaboration (NHK/FIFA) with a follow-up 10 sec. comment by a member who has contributed quite a bit of on topic information to this 4K thread over the months/years.

For perspective, this represents your typical ‘on topic’ thread for which I lost 15min. of my life reading - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=262193 as well as coming away disgusted with the ‘community’ behavior and complained to no one.

Here……something as you can see that you can’t get on the tech spec page of imdb for Queen of the Desert, as of this moment when I checked -

Is that the motion picture ^ went through a DI process to produce a 4K theatrical deliverable.
Are we square now?

Earnest question - Does just posting down-rezed framegrabs from what some would say be an ill-fated 4K film project also qualify as “discussion”? Out of sensitivity to others , I’ve disabled the play function so as not to promote a “discussion” and thereby potentially disturb those complaining by having introduced the temptation for some to view an entire video clip of men running around a field in shorts down in Brazil.

Despite…

As the film says…

With one image from the film showing the hamstrung nature of SDR (meaning HDR could have helped with the perceived detail of the 4K in the stadium shadows)….

Well, there was an example at a recent trade show which caused me and others some eye discomfort and which I posted the video somewhere on this thread in the past to firstly demonstrate the merits of HDR…with the other scenes done right. When I have more time to contribute, I’ll find that video and subsequently point out the poorly created portion of the exhibited HDR live action movie which, to be honest, caused momentary eye strain.
Here you go, I found the post with the video clip – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post10746598

Now, while you read the post and watch the short movie (if memory serves, shot by the same cinematographer who shot most of the episodes of 'House, M.D.'), give me some time to type up an explanation as to what I was referring to as to not doing HDR right.

Soooo, although by viewing that clip on your typical home display or perhaps someday mobile device (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...day-app-797968 ), you can’t really experience the ocular (that means ‘eye’) discomfort, I can tell you that while watching ~ 3PH from the 30” Canon HDR monitor which was showing that movie short at NAB, for example, at the very beginning where there’s the tracking shot of the mobster-type walking across the bar to hand the phone to his boss and immediately the setting switches to an exterior shot of a brightly lit scene with a desert backdrop and the father talking on the cell phone to the son….that abrupt transition made my eyes wince as they had no time to adapt to such a the large change in luminance.

Best not to have mastered that desert exterior so bright if that movie is intended to be seen with that monitor, or, as I posted more generically last April in regards to the HDR aspect of UHD, best….

My feelings exactly. Or as my friend Darin always says, my eyes work great in a cave and they work great out in a brightly lit day, but they don't like bouncing immediately from one to the other. I find it funny that so many people complain now (with a paltry 14fL) when they walk out of a dark movie theater into a brightly lit day or lobby at a movie theater but somehow doubling the image brightness is a fantastic thing. I am ALL for massive increases in dynamic range, contrast at movie theaters has sucked for a long time compared to what you can achieve at home, but even on a small 65" plasma at home with some ambient light my wife complains about abrupt transitions between dark and bright images. In my theater room I have my projector calibrated to 14 fL (120" diagonal screen) and despite being about half as bright as my plasma, the larger screen coupled with darker room makes it even worse for her at times. I can only imagine what it will be like in a theater where your field of view is even larger.

I would suggest perhaps starting a 4K Sports Thread and posting this kind of "information" there. This would perhaps save people having to sift through articles which contribute nothing of value to the topic of 4K MOVIE releases. The usual "few" can then read about and thank posts which are of interest to them, leaving others to discuss the topic at hand.

In keeping with the thread about 4K Movies, when do people think the studios will be in a position to announce launch titles, specifications etc?

For one thing, the project was a planned 4K Movie release.
And having to sift thru all the on topic NOISE that proliferates other threads to find some actual meat (accurate meat) is somehow less demanding than glancing at a few screenshots…hmm. Whatever you say.

In the interval, just wondering is that a hair color change or trick lighting?....cool either way. Anyway, although the retro physical media thing is fun, I wanted to give you (and any other Londoners) a heads-up to a VIP event in the high-end of Soho post neck of the woods at….

I figure your due date back in Blu-ray.com town should be about right after the June 3rd sessions.

I do not profess to have any inside knowledge or tidbits of info I can post for praise or comment. I am however open to any discussion about 4K MOVIE releases. As far as I was aware, this is a public forum, open to discussion to anyone and this particular section is clearly headed 4K MOVIES releases?

Hence my question, which I am quite within my right to post

Was not aware you were not allowed to ask any questions, and only provide answers.Perhaps a mod can advise?

I didn’t say that. ‘Discuss’ it then to get the ball rolling for others. In other words, post what’s your opinion of ‘when do you think studios will be in a position to announce launch titles, specifications etc?’ and why do you think so? Maybe with your help by offering something more substantial than a question, we can get a little momentum on that topic from regular members….as well as moderators alike….to help contribute to the flow of the 4K Movie Releases thread. Kris D. did his part already x2 today.

I watched Oz The Great and Powerful 3D last night and was very impressed with the color range, the presumably Rec709 image is spectacular. It has some of the richest and brightest colors I've seen on Blu-ray. I wonder if this will receive a UHD HDR release? I can only imagine how good that will look. :impressed:
