Default This (probably) means we'll see Videodrome on Blu-ray...

This really sucks, but to look at the bright side of things we'll most likely get a Blu-ray release of Cronenberg's classic together with the release of the re-make:

Universal Pictures is set to remake David Cronenberg's 1983 classic VIDEODROME reports Variety. In the original, James Woods played the head of a sleazy Canadian TV station which jazzes up the ratings by receiving abd broadcastings transmissions of a show called "Videodrome" which shows torture and murder. Later he finds that a side-effect of the Videodrome signal is maliciously provoking brain tumours in the viewer and causing hallucinations which are able to manifest in his physical flesh.

The new one will introduce the idea of nano-technology and make the film a large-scale sci-fi action piece. Cronenberg is not yet involved in the new project. Ehren Kruger (THE RING remake) will pen the script and produce alongside Daniel Bobker.

Leaving aside that the story's soul is rooted in the birth-of-cable and VHS era of the early 80's, when we were just discovering TV that didn't come off the networks...

"Nano-technology"?...So, guessing they'll just kind of gloss over the original Cronenberg ambiguity that the character might simply have been just going nuts?

Well the way i see it...this is neutral news at worst, and possibly good news. I mean, sure, its practically a fact that the remake wont touch the original, but thats not to say it wont be entertaining in its own way if you just let it be. And...like you said, this should generate some new hype for an often overlooked classic, and hopefully bring us some cronenberg blu-rays. Bring on crash and rabid!

horrible news. I hope they change the name so it will be easier to disconnect it from the original. this movie will have lots of obvious shitty cgi in it. I predict a scene where some nano techy "spiders" crawl through a phone set into someone's ear

They should leave this alone, pure and simple. This film IS a classic and it's a mistake to try to remake this. This will more than likely fail big time.

I cannot fathom this being any good but if it leads to more cronenberg on blu I'll be happy.

Ridiculous how everything has to be drawn-out and spoonfed to moronic movie-goers in 2009, isnt it

+1

Good to see I'm not the only "old school" horror buff here.

I have seen a lot of threads on this forum where people ask for some old Cronenberg on Blu-ray. Are the studios listening to us????

Why the hell release Universal Soldier: The Return on Blu-ray, and hold out on the true classics?

And preserve us from any attempts to turn "Brian O'Blivion" into some "mysterious" Matrix-sequel guru:

You had to be annoyed with Marshall MacLuhan--and all his impenetrably buzzword-buried media slogans--to get the in-joke in the first movie...
It was part of the whole historical mindset of the media change at the time.

Ehren Kruger wrote one good film IMO: Arlington Road. Could be worse.. David Koepp coulda done it.

This remake does not need to be made. I just read about remakes for Drop Dead Fred & Arthur which are apparently happening, plus Nightmare on Elm St. of course. Is there ANY frickin' originality out there these days?

I just did a QC of this film on HD and it is very dated now. It was very groundbreaking at the time but it's definitely a relic of the VHS 80's. I'd actually like to see a modern take on this in the digital age. Scanners would also make a very good remake.

Yeah, but VHS was just part of the Whole Thing--
Imagine a remake of The Ring with a cursed DVD...Doesn't quite do it, huh?

Secret pirated DVD's--or "pirate Internet downloads", as it'll probably be now--just don't have the same underground grunge that hand-to-hand VHS tapes had back in 1983.

(And then there's the whole historical "Porn never made it past the Internet" thing:
'83 Cronenberg knew that late-nite cable and VHS porn was a video viewer's own secret pirate-channel kink, but you just can't imagine getting sucked into Debbie Harry's lips on a Blu-ray or a satellite VOD.)

Yeah, it was kitchy for the cult VHS days but imagine taking it to a whole new level of cyberpunk in the digital domain.

That reminds me of another movie of the same period that's ripe for a 21st century update: Looker.
