Thanks, that got me closer, but the best I can tell, the full-face labels aren't "film" like the Avery 8962. The film makes a HUGE difference in quality and stability. I find it odd that Avery only offers the film material with the large hole version.

Snazzy cover, usher. How were you able to get such a consistent look when working from (presumably) a variety of sources?

Not right now, but I've wanted to do one for awhile. I never liked the cover of the Blu-Ray or the DVD of the movie.
I would have, but good quality photos from this show are a bit hard to find. I was going to use the picture from the DVD set on the second season, but had nothing to use on the third. |

I get the nostalgia factor for this style of covers... on films that are from that era. But these films are from a different time and it feels like the two styles collide far more than they work together. It's this simple old-school design template with large blocks of solid color and vintage logos and fonts mashed with this overly processed modern poster style and the two aren't seeming to blend together in my opinion. I think maybe my biggest issue with them is the color choices, the true blue and red don't blend at all with the colors of the posters, making it look like it's simply a poster copy and pasted onto a template. I'd also consider maybe working on the formatting of the text on the back. While an indent may be proper writing technique, it looks like a mistake in this setting. Also the large blank spaces at the end of the 4th line on Spider-Man, the 4th and 8th line of Spider-Man 2 and the 3rd line of Spider-Man 3 are poorly formatted, I get that you don't want to syllabify the words that would break in those locations, but I would consider working on the formatting so that syllabification is not necessary or biting the bullet for the sake of cleaner looking formatting. Lastly, I'd work on the formatting of the photo collages on the backs. On the first film you leave a nice little space between the top border and the image, but the space between the left border and image is wider than the space between the right border and image. On the second film the space on the right is wider and there is no space at all on top. And on the third film the red borders are gone and there is again no space on top, but there are spaces on either side. Consistency and attention to these small details could really improve your work, but again, these are all just suggestions! As long as you're enjoying your time making them, that is all that really matters! Last edited by RebelPrince1986; 05-19-2015 at 08:13 AM. |

Many thanks for your kind words and suggestions RebelPrince! That was exactly the type of advice I have been needing. I understand your concern about the colors clashing with the modern posters. What I was attempting to do originally was to emulate the blue on Spider-man's costume. I can now see that was the wrong direction to go. As for the large red border around the front and back, that is going to stay because that was the style I was trying to copy. What I will do is try and mess with the surrounding colors to see if I can make them clash a little less (perhaps an orange for the first two movies and grey/black for the third movie).
Thanks for pointing out the errors on the synopsis on the back. The indent was a format style on the vhs covers that I have seen before. I have looked into a few more backs of the original RCA vhs and some of them do not have the indent. I will try the covers without the indent to see what they look like. Sometimes I have trouble stepping back from my works and looking at them objectively, hence why I try and ask for advice. I hate to admit it but they were a cut and paste job from IMDB ![]() As for the pictures on the back, they have been the hardest elements to get correct on all of my covers (even the CBS FOX ones). Either the photos I find are too small, or they are too big to fit without cropping and making them look worse. But I do see what you mean about how off they are on composition (I really need a grid or something to keep them in the correct area). I will try and incorporate your suggestions into these and future covers that I do (I'll start with the first movie since it has the least amount of issues). I do understand your concerns that the covers I am making are becoming nothing more than cut and paste jobs. At this point in time, however I am enjoying recreating what home video boxes looked like. Once I learn a few more techniques, I may branch out into full blown custom covers. Many thanks once again. edit: okay, I have tried to incorporate the ideas and suggestions given to me by RebelPrince. Here is the new version of Spider-man 1: ![]() I am trying a different sized font with the synopsis on back, in order to make it fit better. I like the new color scheme on this one better than the true blue I had originally (and this time I have made sure that each movie will have a different color). Lastly I tried to move the photos on the back so that there were not glaring errors. Thanks once again for the suggestions Rebel. Last edited by stardragon9; 05-19-2015 at 04:24 PM. Question for you guys. I bought some nice glossy photo paper for custom BD covers and it fixed all but one problem, the size. My printer keeps printing out these covers to be taller and longer than a BD case, so I have to cut quite a bit off the sides, top, and bottom to get it to fit into the case sleeve, which makes the edges look uneven. Is there a way to get my printer to print them out in the correct size?
Oh, and does anyone have custom covers that use the original poster art (or whatever) for: Jason Goes to Hell Jason X Freddy vs Jason Curse of Chucky ?? I've got covers for the other F13 movies from Auz and someone had posted ones for the first 5 Chucky movies (can't remember who though), both that were based off their VHS boxes (DVD cases in the case of the Seed of Chucky), but I can't just keep those four movies in the big boxes since that would defy the point of doing this to begin with.
