I actually think it's the 2004 DVDs that you may be referring to, because those are the ones with the horrible waxy characters and all the lens flares. The 2006 release covers aren't that bad.

EDIT: On second thought, I just looked and they're the exact same covers. Sorry.

They are not the exact same covers though, the 2006 DVD's have more of a throwback look to them, the pics are different. I don't know how to describe it in those professional terms though. Here are the differences:

2004 DVD

2006 DVD

So, in all honesty, YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT! They're both pretty bad... so if I end up buying the Star Wars... which I will probably do... Probably be makin new ones and not using the ones I'm doing now.

Excellent job on the Miracle and Eight Below covers!

I found the BBC version of Life at MovieStop for 29.99 used, can't tell you how much I hate the size/style of the case. Here is my custom for it, made for a 4-disc case like the one Planet Earth is in. Click to download, enjoy!

Hey DV8, I was looking at your Harry Potter covers again and I just have a couple questions if you don't mind asking... (if this belongs in a PM I am sorry don't be mad at me)

Can you tell me what font you used for the lettering? I really like that. Also, the background, did you use one background and just change the color of it? I was trying that last night and couldn't quite figure out how... I just need to know if I'm on the right track! Thanks!

Edit: I just saw a Harry Potter font at EuphoricFX, is that the one you used? Thanks

(If you're wondering, I'm trying something other than using posters or artwork, I am using your idea to learn, but I promise I will not post anything anywhere that is too much inspired by yours)

Hey very well done! I will no doubt be using this! I like the box so I'll still keep it on display in my collection, but this will be a cleaner look in the rest of the blu's. Thanks!

This is a good place to ask... it lets others learn too.

The fonts are "Potter" for the Movie Name and "Lumos" for each chapter name. But there are many Harry Potter fonts out there under different names that you can download with the same look. Just search Harry Potter fonts in Google for those two. As for the Harry Potter title, its about 8 layers of beveling and color overlays to give it that effect and allow it to grab and blend to the color of each cover, so the red cover gives Harry Potter title a light red hue, same with green, blue etc. You can totally use the Title Treatment you found on Efx. Just make sure its a .png file so you don't have to remove any background. I'm pretty sure it is.

As for the background, its 5 different elements of what I found as "Leather Background". 2 duplicated to make front and back, one cropped down for the spine and 2 smaller crops that I used a bevel with an inner shadow, this gives the effect of the fold/bend mark on books where they open. I added an additional layer of black on the front and back, erased most with a large erase brush to the edges then applied "Difference" effect and lowered the opacity to give it more of an aged look.

Once the title, spine and everything is in place, (include this with credits, logos, specs and any details you add to the first one, you can make your duplicates, basically click on the top bar of the file, not PS file bar and choose duplicate for as many as you need (ie 6 more times for potter) - this way each cover has everything in its same place and you don't have to try to match element placements on each one, just change the title and details per movie.

click on each layer you want to adjust - then go into Hue/Saturation on "Image" then "Adjustment" on the menu tab at the top of PS. Adjust the Hue to change your image to the new color you want. Do this for each duplicate file to different colors. Remember to write down the hue number for each color you choose, if the front hue doesn't match the back hue, it will look funny. For me it was 5 hue adjustments for front/back/spine/and fold images.

Hope this helps - anything else just ask, there are plenty of helpful people around here.

AWESOME! Thanks so much! I've been reading some online tips ever since I got PS so its a lot of info all to take in at once I'm gonna go home and at least try some things that you mentioned here to see what I can come up with (don't know if I'm ready to try the layer upon layer upon layer trick yet) but thanks again!

Someone requested a cover based on a poster from Let Me In a while back, so I thought I would give it a try.

This is a very rough first draft/WIP. I welcome all suggestions and criticism as this is my first attempt at this.

For all those interested in the Battle Royal cover competition,

Bunny Dojo has posted a preview of the covers on his facebook, and for those who don't have facebook (like me) the preview has been posted in the EuphoricFx.org forum under "competitions" by RRJR84.

It's pretty neat to look at the vast amounts of talent and great covers that were submitted. It's really unbelievable.

Mobjack,

The main resource you're using for the front looks low res. Have you looked for a high res on euphoricfx.org? The red text looks sort of compressed and has a bit of aliasing around the edges.

I noticed that too. The image I am using is huge and high res. Not sure why it came out like that. I will play with it some more this evening and see if I can get it straight. Is there a setting or something that would cause that?

And if you are interested in custom covers and haven't registered at EuphoricFX.org its a really awesome site. I just registered recently and am blown away by the resources available to you after just posting 5 times in the forums. Great site for pros like Aggie AND noobs like me! Check it out...
