Every single one of those covers are amazing. Every one. Great work, bartlett!

I'm actually dying to see what you do with Harry Potter. Please do some for the Ultimate Editions!

i didn't buy it because it looked like someone scanned the artwork from the dvd release from a 90's scanner, printed it and scanned it again then slapped it on the bluray.

There's no poster art for this which really catches the flavour of the movie. The movie underperformed at the boxoffice and the marketing campaign got the blame. In all advance advertising they used the pure art deco design, which is a beautiful piece, but everyone who saw it thought it was for an animated movie.

The final release poster was better, but they couldn't seem to make up their mind whether to feature the Rocketeer or the actor. In the end they featured Bill Campell with his helmet off, tucked under his arm (perhaps a contractual obligation?). But the selling point of the movie is the Rocketeer character, so the poster had a poorly rendered Rocketeer figure superimposed up in the clouds. Furthermore, the jetpack is a major star of the movie, but they struggled with shoehorning it into the picture since it is worn on the back. (Guns are a no-no for Disney, hence the Timothy Dalton had his firearm airbrushed out of his hand for the poster.) You can see the pickle the marketing people at Disney were in, trying to sell this movie.

There are several variations of the poster, but none work particularily well. For the DVDs they upended the balance to feature the Rocketeer more heavily, but it still looks cobbled together.

For a successful example of a poster campaing selling a similar kind of movie, I refer you to the wonderful art for the Sky Captain movie. They captured the adventure, the period and the tone just right. I think the same approach should have been used for Rocketeer.

So, could I do any better? I decided to start from scratch, but I'm afraid my own attempt at something cool for the front cover was hampered by the dearth of good picture material out there. Ideally you'd have an action pose of the Rocketeer from the back, looking over his shoulder, jetpack lit, pistol in hand. I only wanted to use art from the actual movie, ignoring all the fan-art, private costume photos or CGI models I found, so this is the best I could do.

For the front I used the image of Bill Campbell from the official poster, and pasted a picture of the helmet prop on top of it. I also resized and replaced the jetpack to be more prominent. I looked for an image of the Rocketeer holding his gun so that I could graft that arm onto the image, but no luck.

The image of Jennifer Connelly was so beautiful it couldn't be ignored. Originally she was in a sitting position, arms slumped over the back of a chair but I altered it to look as if she was free standing. I also did some slight airbrushing of her skin, redid her hair and added some highlights to the lips and eyes to make them stand out more.

I would have liked to fit Timothy Dalton's tommygun in there as well, but it is mostly cropped off to maintain a balance of the figures. The image of him wasn't the best, and I'm sure his agent would have no-no'ed it if this was official art.

And you've GOT to feature the blimp. This is a generic Zeppelin standing in for the fictional Luxembourg of the movie.

I went a bit overboard with the art deco on the back, but it was just too much fun to resist. I tried to fit the heavy, Lothar, in there as well, but opted to have the image of the airborne Rocketeer there instead. The images on the back are screengrabs from a HDTV recording of the movie. The resolution was just barely adequate to hold up. There is room left for the specs if this ever sees an official release on Blu-ray. Fingers crossed.

This thing took me two whole days, the first of which was spent on the front image. I'm sure professional cover designers are called upon to produce something like this in an afternoon's work. My hat's off to them :-)

That's it, I think I've got this custom cover thing out of my system.

As usual, PM me if you want this.

BTW, I'm using Illest Villain's cover templates as a basis for all my covers. Thanks go out to him for his generous sharing.
If you look around on some prop or replica sites, you can find some great artwork and Rocketeer costumes to use.

I have a simple request so any help would be great. Does anyone have a cover for Sucker Punch? I don't need anything fancy, even a scan of the regular would be great. I bought one off the forums that was disc only and can't find any to print off the internet. Thanks for your help.

Edit: Got one! Thanks Yoda!

Downloaded the covers! Thanks again bartlettphoto. I just need to wait for the movies to be released to show them off. I'd love to see what you have working for the harry potter series, if its anything like the star wars, it should be phenomenal.

Excellent work all round there, Bartlett (Which one are you BTW?) I hope everyone appreciates how he made custom modifications for each and every request. I certainly do. Looks like he had to do some serious cloning to fit the theatrical poster for Jedi into a Blu-ray format. These things aren't made at the push of a button, I can assure you.

The thing is, your "comic" set doesn't use the comics art for the first trilogy. (John Alvin's 1995 posters instead). I made a couple of DVD covers last year where I used the Marvel Comics art for ESB and Jedi. I never made one for ANH, but I suppose the Chaykin poster would be the only choice, though I find it too cartoony.

Chaykin poster (Google for High-Rez):

If you're at all interested, I'll gladly mail you High Rez versions of the fronts from the Marvel Adaptions. Please note, this is not a request for more versions, just if you're interested. Oh, and happy to see you kept Jar-Jar for Ep. I.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I stick by my first instinct mentioned in the post you quoted:

I set myself this limitation for practice. Also, I excluded all Dave Stevens' original art for/from the comics to avoid this looking like an animated movie.

..and I still cheated, using a photo of what may or may not be a prop replica of the Rocketeer helmet.

What do you mean, "which one are you"? I like the art you have for ESB and ROTJ, but the ANH art would stand out like a sore thumb! If you could find a better match for ANH, I would be happy to make ANOTHER cover set for IV-VI. I actually wanted to use the Alvin posters at first, but couldn't find anything from the PT to match until I found textless versions of the TPB covers to Ep 1 and 2. I then scanned my brothers copy of the TPB for ROTS and edited it to match. I think the set works well like that, so maybe I shouldn't call it the "Comic" set, more like a FrankenSet...

Rusty or Matt?

I kinda figured you picked the Alvins to match the TPB covers, and I don't think the Marvels are necessarily better. I just got hung up on the "comics-set" label. No need for another variant, really.

For Rocketeer, part of the challenge I set myself was to create a poster from scratch using existing material. Some of the existing posters are bloody good, but none of them are just right. Neither is mine, but I had fun in the attempt.

Rusty, thanks for checking out the site! It's actually way out of date. I am currently making an entirely new site, just need to really put some time into it. There will be a section dedicated to my BD, DVD and CD designs when it is up!

Regarding these Conan covers, it would really help if someone would PM me the specs as soon as they have them. This would be for the North American versions of the films. What I need is: Aspect ratio, Video codec, Audio codec(s)/languages, list of subs, actual runtime (read off the disc), a comprehensive list of all extras. And anything else I've forgotten...

I'm planning on getting the European releases myself, and will make versions with Euro specs as well.
