Sure, but they seem to have a good relationship with Fox so it's no shock to see the 20th Century logo as part of a UHD Alliance which has Panasonic leading the way.

That said, I'd be shocked if Sony weren't onboard 4K BD, so I'm thinking it's more the former and will remain optimistic for the time being...

Well, you guys might (and I feebly say might) have to give Sony Pictures a pass at least for the time being, because even if the home entertainment decision-makers (pay grade Pres. and V.P. level) feel it be in the company’s best financial interest to join the alliance, ultimately...you run the proposal thru legal in order to analyze the whys, wherefores, legal commitments, etc. and I’m thinking SP’s in-house attorneys as well as their outside hired guns are already overwhelmed with other matters, namely as a follow-up to so it begins

The way I remember it they were one of the leaders on Blu-Ray 3D as well so they really seem to be the leaders in moving technology forward. My 3DTV is a Panasonic.

I think IF we get a standard, a Panasonic-exclusive Avatar 2 4k BD might be in the offing . . .?

I would hate having more exclusives!

What they also need to do is:

1) Get rid of the awful, bloated Java software that loads and reacts so slowly.

2) Stop locking the functions of our remotes.

3) End all these friggin' layers of previews at the beginning of the discs.

4) You should put the disc in and have it load right to the menu... hit play... and the screen fades to black and the movie starts. All this other junk just pisses people off and makes them want to crack the encryption to rip the discs just to get rid of the extraneous B.S.

They need to release the 4k players in perfect working order, right out of the gate, with no hiccups! Meaning, they need to be fully loaded ready go.

I believe the Sony 930C is.

I love 3D and my 2013 65x900a 4K/3D tv and will definitely by another 3D tv.

More official info. So it seems like the disc spec is maxing out at 100 gigabytes. That seems a bit low and with a higher bitrate it will be difficult to fit a three hour plus movie on one disc and that's considering. I was hoping for 128 gigabyte capacity to fit larger films without needing to compromise the bitrate

Most Ultra HD televisions have passive 3D capability. Its only a few strip down models that dropped the feature to keep the price low.

The TVs that have me most excited are Ultra HD OLED models. All seem to have passive 3D and of course perfect contrast

I think there had been talk about using larger discs at some point... as long as they're within the current BDXL specs, I would think larger capacity discs could be read by the first gen Ultra HD players.

As of right now, 66 GB and 100 GB discs are ready to be stamped by the majority of Blu-ray disc duplication companies with current assembly-line hardware. The other higher capacity discs (like quad layer), not so much.

Most really long epic movies, such as the LOTR trilogy, have been rightly split to two discs, though it could be said that a few of them should have been on more than one disc for a healthier bitrate that weren't.

It will be interesting to see how many studios use 100 GB discs right off the bat for the best possible image quality afforded by the format.

There is no doubt that the audio formats from Blu-ray will be ported over to Ultra HD discs including newcomer codecs Auro3D, DTS-X object based audio, and DTS Coreless Lossless (it's pure lossless with no lossy backup core). I don't know why they would need to continue lossy audio support except for the foreign language dubs or extras. I don't think interlaced video will be included this time around...

I do hope that ATSC and PAL country formats are supported by all regions this time (of course, we all wish there were no region locks), so no frame rate conversions will be necessary. For instance, Downton Abbey is shot at 2.8k on Arri Alexa's at 25 fps. The U.S. discs should be released at 25 fps. and the players and TV's should accept them as is, and vice versa for U.S. TV programs released to PAL countries.

OLED has a tough hill to climb. Yields are still unacceptable and many have switched gears to Quantum Dots and other, cheaper LCD panel improvements.

No rush, I'm upgrading my amp this year and will probably add a 4k player before a PJ arrives. No interest in a 4k TV whatsoever. (unless current TV dies)
Yeah, I feel the same way. I have a 160" screen and Bluray looks awesome on that size. No rush for 4K just yet. When my globes die out in my projector, hopefully the prices of 4K projectors would be at a reasonable price and I'll upgrade then. No interest in a 4K standard TV yet either. DVD still looks good on a regular size TV imo...4K is just more for bragging rights at this point.

When it comes to films on a physical media, they really need to try to give them a long run. DVD has almost hit the 20 year mark. I hope regular Bluray can do the same, if not longer...

How far away do you sit from your screen?

On my mere 100 inch screen at a 7.5 foot viewing distance (from the beginning of the chair), 1080p definitely shows it's faults, and I'm not comfortable pushing the seats any farther back, else I defeat the purpose of having a big screen.

Seriously? My Uncle has a 120 inch screen and the image looks fantastic. You can start to see the pixel structure a bit but that's about it. The image is more than fine.

128 GBs would've been nice, but there will always be exceptions in film history. The 4½ hour Gettysburg would be a struggle to fit even on a 128 gig disc with a maxed out bit rate. Then you have the juggernaut over them all, Shoah with its massive 9½ hours.

It's HDTV preview but you can read some interesting things about upcoming 4K BD format, for example what a difference it will make if you master a film transfer for HDR UHD versus HD mastered to the current Rec 709 standard

Quote:
In this head-to-head the leap in picture quality delivered by the SUHD TV looked massive, with the SUHD set pummelling its predecessor in every image department. For instance, the picture looked much brighter, and enjoyed vastly punchier, bolder reproduction of white colours. Colours looked far more vibrant and dynamic, as well as containing vastly more subtlety and tonal range. Detail levels looked almost ludicrously higher, especially in dark scenes. Motion was cleaner with less blurring and softness. Best of all, the SUHD set’s contrast range looked enormous, with startlingly inky blacks sitting right alongside the stellar peak whites.

The back row of seating (where we normally sit) is around 6m (~19.7 feet) from the screen. The front row is around 4.5m (~14.7 feet) from the screen.

The Bluray picture is superb. DVD's look like absolute crap though...definitely see the limitation with those especially after watching a Bluray.

Actually Red-Ray is a 4K streaming device that was launched by Red (the cinema camera people). The streaming failed as the provider they chose disappeared. Now it is mostly used by people with red cameras who can upload to the device and carry it around to demonstrate their stuff.

This also says something about 4K streaming!!!
