I for one loved what Microsoft was going to do at first.they were looking into the future.i could have went to a friends house and signed in on his system and every game I owned would have been on his without takin it from my house.it wasn't Microsoft that is pushing this but the companies because they are getting screwed by the 2nd hand game market.
The fact is that a person don't really on the game or movie they buy.we just own the right to use it on the disc we have.by law we are not suppose to copy or sale any movie or game after we bought it,some movies even post it at the start of the movie.
The fact is Microsoft had it perfect from the beginning.game developers already said that a lot of games that is coming out for the new system will require online.the fact is we are heading to the digital format and physical media is dieing out.i use to have over a 1000 CDs and when digital music started the majority of people said they don't like it and rather the CDs and I was one of them.well look at us now.i read n article that said music companies are phrasing CDs out because they are not profitable enough to keep putting them out.i even have all my music in digital format and don't buy CDs anymore.what I'm saying is digital is the future and it can't be stopped.i remember when Microsoft first starting pushing digital content on games .sony fans said they didn't want that and it want work.well Sony is big on it now to because it caught on because it's the future.
Just remember when physical media disappears be prepared to hold onto your wallet. Studios will have no incentive to provide you with a pay once own forever option. Everytime you want to watch your favorite film be prepared to pay a viewing fee.

Netflix won't be able to sustain a low fee all you can view buffet. Hollywood knows Netflix is devaluing their content and they are going to push for higher prices from Netflix which will drive up the subscription fees.

We are just at the beginning of this change and don't believe for a second that the content providers are doing all this in the best interest of consumers.

Netflix is going to have to move to tiered streaming services. Netflix basic will most likely be like Hulu... mostly old TV shows and C and D list movies. If you want A-list content, Netflix isn't going to be $7.99/month. It will be more like $30/month.

All been said before friend. We just get a new fortune teller every few weeks telling us about how streaming is going to wipe bluray off the planet. Has not happened. All this talk is just going in circles. I am as guilty as any in the past but surely the same arguments on loop have a shelf life?

That is all.

Oh, wait. Streamers and the red corner have been telling us bluray sales will fall off this year. Well, they are up and gaining steadily. They will tell us the same next year. You go and enjoy your streaming Scott, I will continue to treat my projector with the respect it deserves. No second best in my house, no siree!

but seriously, I find more stuff on physical disc through Netflix that I want to rent than if I were to find it online or streaming.

A la carte (which you seem to be alluding to) is a pipe dream outside Apple and Itunes atmosphere and will never happen , most executives in the entertainment industry have accepted this and abandoned trying to get people adopting it.

Don’t count on it.

Without a doubt, the year after year merry-go-round does become rather tedious at times. Not to worry though Steed as thanks to waka (flocka) , I’ve got a temporary diversion….at least for us.

After the Youtube commercial, the endless debate can resume unhindered.

I hope you are right because the day they kill owning a physical copy and remove the pay once for unlimited views is the day I abandon the hobby and say screw whatever the greedy studio system puts out.

Hey, at least we can all argue in circles about the merits of 4k now instead.

exactly ownership IS THE REASON I'm in this hobby. without it I'd just toss some crap on the 50 inch plasma and forgo the speakers and everything else. no enjoyment in something you can't own

Somewhat of a return to ye olden days for the studios/distributors?

Before full-length flicks were commercially available and you had to buy a ticket at the neighborhood theatre for each viewing...
Or you could suffer through the pan-n-scan versions of a film, edited-for-time so that the broadcast TV channel could pay for its use by shoving commercials at you every 10-15 minutes.

BTW, is the same prediction still being made for music CDs? Away with physical media. Let them pay to download files?

Just because streaming options, quality and availability increase doesn't mean that anything is happening to physical media. Just because more people stream doesn't mean that physical media is going away. Yeah, it may be harder to rent physical media, but there will always be some physical form available.

Its a no brainer. If you old enough, you remember $80 VHS movies in the 80s, that's $165 today adjusted for inflation. You can get Blu-rays new for $5. You get HD access to tens of thousands of titles streaming for $8. Access is cheaper and better than ever.

Isn’t that your favorite footballer of all time shown quickly in the historical montage of past World Cup greats near the end of the clip?

If a 4K BD of the 2014 World Cup ever comes to fruition, I wouldn’t be surprised if it contained a mixture of native 4K footage and HD footage (up-converted to 4K, which will probably look very good)….kind of similar to what occurred (unbeknownst to consumers at the time) with the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D ( https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-O...Blu-ray/17152/ ).

I explained that ^ particular imagery contribution somewhere in Club Penton back-in-day….in other words, the 3D Blu-ray of the 2010 World Cup contained both native stereoscopic footage as well as 2D -> 3D converted shots (which was probably never publicized because of anti-3D conversion sentiment at the time). Anyway, a lot of 3D cameras located in prime camera positions (reserved for 2D HD cameras) would have involved the proposition of additional expensive seat kills (which doesn’t go over too well with FIFA, etc.). So, similarly, I would expect the same type of situation to happen with 4K cameras covering the 2014 Cup (they’ll lose the *turf war*), so the 4K Blu-ray producer will most likely be inclined to use some HD -> 4K up-conversion to fill in some of the action.

If this does happen, might be interesting to see if anyone can correctly spot the difference (in native acquisition), for, if memory serves, nobody could with converted stuff in the 3D Blu-ray of the 2010 World Cup (in fact, if I recall, some reviewers (unknowingly) declared the footage (which was actually 2D -> 3Dconverted) as some of the best 3D of the entire Blu-ray).

Too funny…flash forward to the distant future when displays like these start making serious news - http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/19/s...cd-with-16x-m/ ……I can just envision member Tok's Signature ->

8k... really? Can't we just be happy with 4K for a while.
