I like the idea of going back and seeing the early stages of the outbreak. I like the idea of seeing this go down in an urban setting. But so far, I'm not liking the characters, especially the drug-addled son. I just cannot care about someone like that, and it doesn't help that the actor comes across as *ding* [CinemaSinsVoice] Discount Johnny Depp [/CinemaSinsVoice]. Actually, my GF called him Discount Skeet Ulrich, which makes him Double-discount Johnny Depp. Or Closeout, or Bargain Bin, you get the point. He's a mousy druggie and I don't care.

The viral video of the police incident reminded me too much of Diary of the Dead, and the "family" (can't wait to get into the drama of divorce and daddy issues ) shacking up with the old couple reminds me of World War Z. The season preview also shows some Purge-like rioting, which I'm looking forward to. So basically, I want to see destruction and urban breakdown, not drugs and divorce, in my zombie show. Will keep watching.

Unknown yet if flu shots are directly related to the outbreak, or just a reaction to a widespread illness. TWD zombies are Romero-style: The recently dead turn; no mass risings from graves.

I got a major Johnny Depp vibe from the son as well, I kept wondering during the episode if the actor was doing it on purpose.

Yeah I think they are just implying that the illness is popping up but people think it is just the case of the flu getting people sick. I don't think they will ever tell us what causes the outbreak, in this show or the other.

I especially like how in several scenes you could hear emergency vehicle sirens. Whether planned or not, I can only wonder if those sirens were racing to some zombie related incident!

I thought that was a nice touch - using the sprawl of LA to mask the zombie apocalypse. That it wasn't this big enormous singular event but kind of creeped up on the unsuspecting citizens. Anyone who's ever spent some time in LA knows that helicopters overhead and sirens in the distance aren't outside the norm

FEAR THE WALKING DEAD
Yes, that is the intro to the show. The music feels very John Carpenter like.

The shows intro logo feels very Insidious even with the music in the background.

I've only visited here once, a while ago, but can't recall. Of course most cities will have heir share of emergency vehicle activity, but most shows/films don't seem to capture it, unless it's intended.
Perhaps the show creators might mention something in a potential commentary track!

Really enjoyed EP1 of FTWD. Excellent! After the episode was over, I was initially disappointed because I thought it would show the outbreak actually happening full-force (as implied in the trailers).

But, the more I thought about this, this pilot episode was perfect - it did show the early beginnings of the virus/outbreak - i.e., you know something is terribly wrong, but we don't know what it is yet - and, a lot of people are still unaware of the problem. The conversation the mother (Kim Dickens) had with the concerned student that was following the whole thing online was very telling.

And, I'm thinking the other scenes from the trailers - specifically the one where the authorities take down a female punk rocker zombie - are from forthcoming episodes.

The ending scene in the culvert was especially disturbing -
[Show spoiler]did the zombie bite the mother's arm?! It looked like it, but I wasn't sure.

I will need to go back & re-watch the episode again in the next week - I liked it that much.

[Show spoiler]She is the female lead highly, highly doubt she was bitten
. I think the show is fantastic out the gate as well. Lotta tension.

So you like poor pacing, uninteresting and unintelligent chararcters, poor acting, and very little plot progression? Interesting. To each their own I guess.

I love character development as much as the next person but I just couldn't feel any sympathy or anything for the characters we have been introduced to. I found myself bored and just waiting for an action beat or something to happen.

Wasted pilot. Let's hope the sophomore episode is a bit better.

Honestly I hope that the show has a slow but tension-filled build up. Far too many films and now TV shows in the genre (zombies are a genre ) ramp up things way too quickly, completely skipping over the fall of society as the virus spreads. I prefer to see more of this aspect in this show at least for this season.

I think that shot in the culvert, specifically
[Show spoiler]the bite was purposely obscured. May add to some drama later in the season if she were (but I don't know if people turn slower now than later if they've been bitten or if Kim Dickens as a lead is expendable). However, she was also wearing a jacket which may have prevented the zombie from biting all the way through

cant believe there were 30mins of commercials...like seriously?!

with regards to the mother
[Show spoiler]i think Cliff Curtis' character got in there in time, or so it appeared to me, i hope they don't kill her or Cliff off soon, they're the only adults/actors in the show

The same thing popped into my head as well. Seems like he was channeling those all-over-the-place mannerisms. Like a cross between Depp's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Benny & Joon or What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

I thought he came across as a doped up version of Willie Wonka.

Bah. 85 mins of exposition and 5 mins of action.

Not off to a great start.
