That's great casting. Have always enjoyed this guy and think he would be perfect for a show like this.

Totally! Humanity is way more dangerous than zombies or monsters.

I like a mixture of zombie/human aspects... some of my favorite moments of the series is the dynamic between Rick/Shane, and how their perspectives continued to change as things progressed and what effects that had on the group.

If it was specifically focused and exclusively about the zombies it would get boring and burn out fast, what Romero has to realize is that this is a serial and not a movie... having exclusive zombie threats in a movie is much more practical and would make more sense than an ongoing series.

I've felt that the last 2 seasons of the main series while good has become a bit stagnant and on a steady decline due to creative changes, i don't think the current creative team matches up with the first 3 seasons or so. I'm not greatly thrilled at the idea of a spinoff at the moment because i feel like there is a need to fix the main series in that regard before focusing on spinoffs.

Kim Dickens To Star In ‘The Walking Dead’ Companion Series On AMC

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Gone Girl standout Kim Dickens has been tapped as the female lead opposite Cliff Curtis in the pilot for The Walking Dead companion series at AMC. The project was created by Robert Kirkman, on whose graphic novel The Walking Dead was based, and Dave Erickson, with Adam Davidson set to direct. Dickens landed the female lead after a lengthy casting process, with AMC testing a number of actresses for the role.

The untitled Walking Dead spinoff, code name Cobalt, takes place during the same zombie apocalypse depicted in the blockbuster mothership series but in a different location. It revolves around a divorced teacher (Curtis) and a guidance counselor (Dickens), who are working together and are in a relationship. The counselor has two children from a previous marriage, played by Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey. She looks like the girl next door but has a darkness to her, a troubled past that will come back to haunt her.

In addition to David Fincher’s hit thriller Gone Girl, Treme and Deadwood, Dickens recently recurred on FX’s Sons Of Anarchy. She is with Gersh.
Nice. Loved her in Deadwood and Treme.

I agree - and I don't see the point.

Much as I like "The Walking Dead," it's not exactly the most original idea out there, and, for me, the jury's out until the show ends. If it has an unsatisfying ending (like "Lost") - say, Rick wakes up in the hospital, says "oh, what a terrible dream!" then opens the hospital door and is swamped by zombies... well, I doubt I'll ever watch the thing again.

It would nice if they moved the ball forward somehow. After all, we had indications in season one that the world beyond our main characters was trying to do something to fight the zombie plague... but they seem to have completely abandoned any idea of an overall story arc (Eugene seemed to be going in that direction, but then they quickly pulled the plug). All in all, I get the sense the series is being written by people who don't know where the story is going, but just want to keep the show on the air for as long as people will watch it (and buy "Walking Dead" calendars, graphic novels and blu-rays). Again.. a little too reminiscent of "Lost."

The walking dead has been a graphic novel a long long time before it was a TV show and it's still on going. You can forget about the fight of the zombie plague as such , as that's not really the direction the story goes and it was never intended for Eugene to take us there either

The creators of the show addressed this directly saying everything is really happening & it's not a dream by rick or anyone else. They know what they're doing unlike the creators of LOST (who were lost, & incidentally LOST was not a dream & everything except the flash sideways in the final season happened). I don't imagine there will be a grand reveal of what caused the Zombie outbreak.

Kirkman has also revealed there will be a big change and evolution in the show when it returns from this mid-season break.

Robert Kirkman Says The Walking Dead Spinoff Will be "Startlingly Different"

Quote:
AMC’s Walking Dead spinoff series is about to begin filming any day now with cast members like Kim Dickens and Cliff Curtis. It has already been revealed that Los Angeles, not Atlanta, will serve as the setting for the show, but we wanted even more intel. Which is precisely why we tracked down Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who now tells us a bit more about what to expect from the show and the ways in which it will and will not mirror the original hit series and the comic book on which it is based.

“I will say that this is going to be a show about family,” says Kirkman. “But it’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in The Walking Dead thus far. So what we’re trying to do with The Walking Dead spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love The Walking Dead, so you’ll get the kind of things that you expect from a Walking Dead story. But, at the same time, we’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of The Walking Dead spinoff is going to be startlingly different.”

Although judging by the ratings you might be hard-pressed to find anyone that has not at least sampled the original show, Kirkman says any previous knowledge of that universe will not be necessary to watch the new companion series. “We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own,” says the exec-producer of both programs. “You could watch The Walking Dead spinoff if you’ve never watched an episode of The Walking Dead and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that’s what we’ve accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I’m really excited.”

Kirkman also confirms that no characters from the original comic book will appear on the new show, which makes sense seeing as how they take place on opposite sides of the country. “It’s Los Angeles. It’s a corner of the world that we have never explored in the comic book series. So, theoretically, something like this could be happening in Los Angeles in the comic book series, but we don’t show you this area of the country in the comic book series. So it fits within that world, but it is all new characters, all new events and all kinds of crazy stuff.”

To further differentiate the two TV versions of The Walking Dead, the new pilot will be directed by Adam Davidson, a newcomer to this world. “He hasn’t directed The Walking Dead,” says Kirkman. “So that is one way that we’re trying to bring a new directing style to the show—to bring in new visual language to this show. That’s something that Adam is working really hard to bring. He’ll largely be responsible for the different look and feel that makes the show stand on it’s own.”

...and yet, how "startlingly" different can it be ? Most zombie apocalypse fiction resembles each other to some degree. Don't get me wrong, I love The Walking Dead and I'm looking forward to this, but he's almost trying too hard to convince us that there is a creative justification for this, when really it's AMCs biggest show and they can just ride on the tailcoat of success be making a spin-off rather than risking anything new creatively.

Perhaps there will be more, and longer, flashback scenes, with the zombie apocalypse just being a background?

Obviously just a guess on my part, but I would find it interesting. I don't need survival/video game zombie killing. I've got the original show for that.

I think it could be incredible if the original show members were to show up in brief flashback cameos. I just love continuity stuff like that.

‘Fear The Walking Dead’ – Bleeding Cool Reads AMC’s The Walking Dead Spinoff Script

Quote:
It looks like The Walking Dead spinoff series for AMC is called Fear The Walking Dead.

Or at least that’s the pilot episode’s name, in this September 2014 script.

Things may change.

Written by Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman and Low Winter Sun‘s writer/producer Dave Erickson, if you want to know nothing about this AMC show stop right no. You have no need to read further.

The Walking Dead, both in comics and in TV, jumped forward. When Rick Grimes woke in the hospital, the zombie infection had happened, society, civilisation had collapsed, the survivors were trying to deal with the aftermath, pick up the pieces and survive – with the realisation that their imminent death was just around the corner. They had become the walking dead of the title.

This is not that show, at least not in the pilot script. The intro gives you a swerve, but the infection has not taken hold yet. The “walkers” are not yet known to the population at large, as society stands on the cusp of its own destruction.
