A more in depth article than what I posted earlier. From the Hollywood Reporter:
Quote:
The top-secret drama, which went through the pilot process with the title of Cobalt (and Fear The Walking Dead), will join the flagship series on the network as the cabler continues to focus on scripted fare. In addition to ordering the pilot to series, AMC has preemptively renewed the drama for a second season. The first season will consist of six hourlong episodes — just like the flagship series did. The drama will premiere on AMC in the "late summer," with season two set for 2016.

Robert Kirkman, who created The Walking Dead comic series, co-wrote the pilot with Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy). Kirkman and Erickson exec produce alongside Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert. Erickson serves as showrunner, while Adam Davidson directed the pilot. Walking Dead VFX guru Greg Nicotero will also exec produce the series.

While AMC has been tight-lipped on its premise, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the series is a prequel that takes place in Los Angeles at the onset of the zombie outbreak. AMC on Monday confirmed that the companion series is set in Los Angeles but revealed nothing more beyond that it will focus on new characters and storylines. The drama is still untitled.

Cliff Curtis (Gang Related) stars as Sean Cabrera, a teacher who shares a son with his ex-wife. Sons of Anarchy's Kim Dickens is set to co-star as Nancy, a guidance counselor who works at the school with Sean and is seeing him romantically. Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) co-stars as Nancy's son Nick, who has battled a drug problem; and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Woods) is set as Nancy's ambitious daughter Ashley, who is the polar opposite of Nick and has dreams of leaving L.A. for Berkeley when the apocalypse strikes.

The Walking Dead companion — first announced in September 2013 — could give AMC a zombie drama in every quarter, given the six-episode freshman season's summer bow. The flagship, which resumes production in the summer, airs the first half of its season in October and the second half in February. The off-shoot series comes as The Walking Dead evolved to mega-hit status. The zombie drama, overseen by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, ranks as TV's No. 1 drama series among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic.
I'm looking forward to this, though it's kind of disheartening that they have a single dad with a teenage son in both shows. Instead of a sheriff, he was a teacher. I'm not knocking it at all, just that I would have preferred something a little more different to The Walking Dead.

I think they should have done an anthology series. Each season focuses on a new batch of characters. An anthology series set in the world of The Walking Dead would be incredibly interesting. You could set a season at the beginning of the outbreak, when people first start returning from the dead, there's looting, mass panic. We got very, very brief glimpses of that in The Walking Dead (Shane at the hospital, Atlanta getting fire-bombed) but a season set when the world is thrown into chaos and no one knows what's happening would be fascinating.

You could have a season that follows, say, a group of former soldiers. Another season that focuses on a group of scientists -- like one of those CDC centers that went dark, that Jenner mentioned in the Atlanta CDC in The Walking Dead. You could have a season that takes place on the west coast, in L.A. There's so many possibilities. That and an anthology would help further distance it from The Walking Dead, which is a serial.

I hope it has a bit more action than TWD does.

I'm doubtful of this companion show. It could be a hit or miss. Wouldn't it be interesting if the show failed?

I am not worried about it having more action, I just hope it has more plot per episode. Not 50 minutes of filler, then 5 minutes of plot progression.

Wished it was based in New York or Chicago. Maybe even Detroit, that would've been something. That way they have Cold winters and everything would be close by with a lot of groups taking over one building. Subways and all sorts of things. Oh well, maybe LA will do just that.

I highly doubt it will fail cause it will give viewers some type of Walking Dead to watch before Season 6 airs

Not being a video game is how TWD has become so popular.

No. This isn't The House of the Dead. Just a little more action per episode.

I'm fine with:

- tight script writing
- good character development
- scenic locations
- high suspense

Those elements have been the smash success of both, the source material, and the show. I'm all for Kirkman & company keeping it that.
Sure the zombie threat is omnipresent, but thankfully not taken to videogame levels.
