He he... I was just coming back to say, I listen to those CD's from the 80's (They were like $14 back then ... each!) using my Blu Ray player.

Edit - (May as well add that I got my first CD player in 1986 so 25 years later would have been a better number.)

Because in the end, as things stated so far, the real power resides with the Netflix CEO and as stated earlier the guy that will be running the DVD business will still be running the DVD buisnes.
I never debated any of that, merely pointed out, to you, that there was a CEO of Qwikster...be it a puppet, or not.

THANK YOU!! If their disc based service is their focus, why have they come out recently and pretty much ANNOUNCED that they're separating the services and putting their focus on STREAMING?! Why is the 'Netflix' name remaining with their streaming service if they don't have faith in it and are focused more on disc rentals?

Is Qwikster going to take over the world? Good luck with that.

And yes, I agree that they might not survive the mistakes they've already made. It's sad, but true.

EDIT: Oh, and I feel this video is relevant to the discussion.

Notice striking similiarities between Netflix and Xfinity on Demand. Looks like Netflix got Comcast on board with their streaming service software.

Netflix was just joking . . . too bad it took the stock falling another 25% . . .

Quote:
It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value our members, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get movies & TV shows.

Thank you.

Wow! The qwikster web site now redirects to Netflix. They must have taken a beating to reverse course like this. I'm wondering how many subscribers they actually lost over the past few months. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

EDIT: Just came across this, ouch. Especially when only a few months ago analysts thought Netflix could reach a price target of $330.

Quote:
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX): Caris & Company reiterated its rating of Below Average for this company and changed its price target from $103 to $96. About the company: Netflix Inc. is an online movie rental service. The Company ships DVDs with no due dates or late fees, directly to the subscriber’s address. Netflix also provides background information on DVD releases, including critic reviews, member reviews and ratings, and personalized movie recommendations.

After their significant price increase, what did Netflix expect to happen, as if they're invincible. One monkey don't stop a show! Life goes on.

"blu-ray out performs in a/v quality" over the blu-rays that Netflix provides?

Anyone following NetFlix knows that they said they are a streaming company, not a rental company a couple of years back. Their trying to shrug off the DVD rental aspect of their company wasn't a surprise. I just dropped the Blu-ray rentals. Dish is coming on with their purchase of Blockbuster, starting with current subs. Same type program, $10/month, currently only offered to Dish subs. That may eventually take off when the number of devices reaches that of NetFlix.

I expect that in 5 years the increase in quality and content of streaming will be huge. As it is, NetFlix is %28 of peak U.S. bandwidth. Hulu's owners decided that it was worth too much to sell and withdrew it off the market. Crackle, HBO GO, Epix HD and devices with channels like Roku, the choices and selection get better and better almost weekly. And the PQ continues to increase too. Great time to have a solid internet connection and no cap. We are DLing just under 300gb/month.

Unfortunately that won't last very long! Most of the country has been very lucky to live, somewhat, "cap free". Then the age-old argument come into play...BD quality PQ/AQ being piped is a pretty large amount of data.
SO we'll see how it all pans out!

Speakeasy, Verizon Fios, Comcast Business, all no cap. I even have a 3 year contract with Comcast. It starts to change you bet that NetFlix will be lobbying Congress to make due on the FCC Broadband plan at http://www.broadband.gov, 95% of U.S. with low cost broadband, 100mbps, by 2020.

Time Warner here, no cap. They tried it a few years back in select markets and people threw an absolute fit over it and TW rescinded REALLY quickly. They're not going to try that again anytime soon.

Yeah, so what you do is call them, pay for a $75 install and for only $5 month more get a business account which has no cap. The $5 is a modem lease, they won't let you use your own. And you have to sign a 3 year contract. Besides being a more solid connection, it seems to never go down like residential did. It also has preferred packets so your traffic is given priority over residential while on the Comcast network. Easy solution. I have been racking up over 250 GB every month since I switched, going to watch NFL Network on PS3 this afternoon which will add about 9GB to my total. And I pay for like 16mbps and get over 30. And do I need to prove I am a business....nope.

Former Comcast Residential customers had consistently switched to Comcast Business (somewhat separate entity) and gotten the same (or better) service with no data cap. “This is gonna be ‘spensive,” I thought. I looked further. Wait, what? It’s the same price? For no data cap? 24-hour customer service? Didn’t see that one coming. Comcast has somehow managed to compete with Comcast and come out the winner. Life is just full of surprises!

Easy there, tiger...don't shoot the messenger! It's not a question of "if", but "when". Caps are going to happen, there's just too much supply/demand for it not to happen. It's kind of similiar to online sales tax. Some states have it, some don't. The government is not going to let all that commerce go untaxed for long.
Again, I'm all for no caps & no online sales tax...but I'm also a realist!
