Done the same with movies I've rented and decided not to finish. That being said, the number of hours NetFlix is streaming is in the billions. 5 billion hours were streamed in Q3, up a billion hours over Q1. http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/21/net...content-in-q3/

No, it was the scale that was wrong in the article. Once corrected, it fits with what was reported. Redbox rentals were about half the 1.1 billion total of physical discs rented so 200 million x 3 qtrs is 600 million, about half.

Yes. Pick any title in the Netflix Watch Instantly, play it for any period of time (like 30 seconds) then stop it. That title will now be counted as viewed. Been this way from the get go at Netflix.

The same is true for any physical rental, that is, if a title is rented then it will be counted as a viewed rental title. However, I would wager that the number of un-viewed rental disc is a tiny fraction of the un-viewed SVOD titles.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos..
“spent his formative years working in a strip-mall video rental shop and is upbeat and easy to talk to” as revealed in the current issue of the New Republic magazine (http://www.newrepublic.com/current-issue) in a fine article by Tim Wu, professor at Columbia Law School in which he interviews Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos about the origins of Netflix as well as what they’re trying to do and why they’re trying to do it (other than, of course, to make money as a for-profit company).

Well worth a read if you don’t have a subscription and happen to see the issue lying around for instance, on the coffee table in your dentist’s office while waiting to go in to have your chompers cleaned and checked out.

Another excerpt - “What was planned all along (since 1999) was really just the evolution to streaming, and thus the name of the company: Net-flix, not DVDbymail.com.”

As there name implies "Net" flix will have to be a Internet provider to survive & buy alot of shares of all the Internet providers stock & be on all the boards. Current Internet providers are not going to let Netflix do what they can do themselves albeit Netflix is the best @ streaming @ this point in time, Internet providers will catch up quick

Yeah and people are sleeping during 1/3 of that 5 billion hours. My mom is one of them. If you turn Netflix off, she wakes up!

Super HD is 1080p. It's just carefully compressed, low bit-rate 1080p. so more detail is retained than you might think. It certainly looks better than an upscaled DVD. But it is 1/4 the bitrate of a good Blu-ray and is actually comparable to a good DVD, in bitrate (4-7Mbps, depending on the movie/show). 4K netflix likely won't go above 10Mbps bitrates and therefore, will only be watchable by people in suburban/urban areas.

there is a new codec in the works, set to replace H.264 (HEVC/H.265). It is hyped to be 50% more efficient than H.264. which means bitrates can be allegedly be cut in half from H.264, and retain basically all of the detail. Or, the bitrate can be kept the same, and 50% better detail will be seen.

*I just read an article where netflix is quoted as saying their 4K will likely be between 10mbps and 16mbps. But, they will also be re-encoding all of their content with HEVC. So every quality level (SD/HD/SuperHD) will see improvements in perceived detail. Again, because HEVC is said to retain 50% more detail over AVC/H.264, when the same bitrate is used.

HEVC/H.265 could also mean Blu-rays will get even better. If the codec is accepted into the Blu-ray standard. The problem there is that higher compression takes better hardware to decode. H.265 will likely require new hardware/new players, to be able to be used. It's possible that some existing hardware that is powerful and flexible, could accomodate H.265 with firmware/driver updates. things such as PS3, PS4, existing PC video cards.

You also want to make sure you edit your playback settings under your account to insure you are getting the best video quality.

I like Netflix but there are a lot they don't have. For some reason older seasons they have are missing discs, like Dark Shadows.

No, I'm pretty sure they have those, along with some of the first Doctor Who? I have them in my que because I wanted to see the show from the beginning and how things lead up to Barnabas's return. Now I could be wrong, if I am can you point out what seasons or discs are missing?

For those with streaming you can use the Hola Better Internet extension on Chrome and view every other country's NetFlix catalogs. They all offer some different titles exclusively by region. Surprisingly, there are some great titles on the Canadian and UK NetFlix offerings that aren't on the US like Justified and Homeland.

After you install it, sign into NetFlix. Then click on the Hola icon and choose the country you want to view. It works for other websites too.

You'd want this. It is $4.99 month but works with just about all external devices.

Well I already use Hulu+ for a couple of bucks more and don't have to do anything. So why would I do this, what's the advantage?

Not sure about Hulu+ but I do know that NetFlix UK and Canada have titles NetFlix US don't like Nurse Jackie, GI Joe Retaliation and Justified to name a couple.

This is for U.S. NetFlix http://instantwatcher.com/

This is for new UK offerings http://whats-on-netflix.com/whats-new/united-kingdom/

You can use to see if titles are being offered in just the UK or both.

Netflix is also experimenting with offering a Standard def only subscription. In my opinion that seems to contradict their 4k streaming plans.
