Around seven million customers still pay Netflix to send them DVDs of movies and TV shows via mail. Two years ago, that number was twice as high. Fast forward another two years, and there could be around four million customers left who get their red envelopes from Netflix. Or maybe even less."

Great! No more: Long Wait, Very Long Wait

Physical media isn't going anywhere. Just like the sky isn't falling.
Streaming will plateau, just like any other flavor of the month.

Patriot is a good, positive descriptive. Never let it be said I have anything against patriotism.

I believe it is important to have a discussion about the future of digital and physical disc, sans emotion, if possible. There will always be a few that have to resort to ad hominem posts, perhaps because they have nothing of substance to offer.

Physical media, including Blu-ray is already going somewhere:

"For the year, Blu-ray sales hit $535 million, a decline from 2012 when it generated $578 million. But the fact that Blu-ray continues to generate such strong numbers will likely encourage the studios to continue to release movies on the high-def disc for at least the next few years. "

"In a related study, a Gallup poll found this week that 80 percent of Americans own either a DVD player and/or Blu-ray player, compared to 39 percent who now subscribe to a streaming service such as Netflix."

"Essentially the same share of Americans own DVD or Blu-ray players as in 2005, 80%, and this is the most commonly owned electronic device," Gallup said in a press release." [Ask yourselves, how many player owners use their players to stream rather than play physical disc. (Source Home Media Magazine)

LOL! Give me a break, polls...schmolls... What do you want every DVD/BD player owner in the world to buy a new player every year? They do last longer than that. I've got several, and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one...how does that factor into those "polls".

Edit: See I can post numbers too: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=12940

If there are massive blu-ray sales going on, of course it's going to affect the over dollar amount...LOL.

My heart skipped a beat when I read this headline:

Quote:
Netflix Instant Thinking About Adding Good Movie

LOS GATOS, CA—In a swift and unexpected departure from their present business model, officials from Netflix revealed Wednesday that the company is currently considering adding a good movie to their online streaming service. “With the growing success of the streaming platform, we thought the time was right to think about possibly offering, just for the sake of variety, one film that wasn’t a total critical and commercial flop forgotten immediately after its initial theatrical release,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sandaros, adding that the company is exploring various options for licensing a single high-quality movie that people would in fact enjoy watching and wouldn’t turn off after the first 25 minutes. “We feel the addition of a popular, above-average, well-made film would provide a nice counterbalance to our existing library of poorly received sequels, totally unknown indie dramas from four or five years ago that you’ve never heard of, and horrendous direct-to-DVD horror features.” At press time, Netflix had reportedly abandoned the plan and added Something’s Gotta Give to its streaming library.
But then the last sentence made me .

There are few advantages in living in Southern California. Weather is one of them. At last count, I had 7 RB kiosks within 1 1/2 miles. They are pretty generous in offering free rentals, 2 for 1, etc.

Point is player sales have been stagnant for eight years. Manufacturers are turning out smart tvs because consumers like the convenience and direct access to content.

The decline in DVD sales is accelerating and BD sales probably topped out in 2012. 2012 to 2013 decline was 7.44%. I predict sales in 2014 will decline more than 10% and future sales declines will accelerate in lock step with DVD.

Good weather, earthquakes, high costs of living...

Netflix has always been great for the wife and I. I don't exepect Netflix disc rentals to last forver, nothing ever does. So, like everything else in life that ends, I'll just revisit my options at that time. Until then, I'll be enjoying the hell out of Netflix's BDs(except those damn rental copies), and the BDs I buy.

For those with NetFlix Streaming, you can use this app and access other countries' NetFlix versions which have different content, like Canada has Homeland. Its a fast VPN. I use it with my laptop that has HDMI out, looks as good as Dish Sat on my TV. I caught the Bling Ring on Mexico, I think. There is a website that lists the titles on Canada vs US and updates it.

Oh, doesn't appear to work with Mac though.

I'm like you Rick, I like going to the mail box to pick up my 2 BD's and know that I can take my time watching them. I just shake my head every time I see a line at a Red Box. I also hear you on the long waits and rental discs.

$535 million?! Blu-ray sales were closer to $2.5 billion last year, according to the DEG, with sales up about 5% from 2012.

Actually the decline in DVD sales has been relatively linear since 2008, averaging around 10% a year.

They worded that article wrong. It's not $535 million "for the year", but $535 million during the period from Black Friday to the end of the year. The reason why it was down 7.44% from 2012, was because there was an extra week last year, since BF occurred a week earlier.

Quote:
In the holiday shopping season extending from Black Friday to the end of the year, the 2013 Blu-ray sales tally of $535 million fell short to the $578 million from the year before, but the gap is easily accounted for considering Thanksgiving fell a week earlier in 2012, giving consumers an extra shopping week. Average weekly Blu-ray sales in the 2013 holiday season amounted to $107 million, compared with $96 million in 2012.

you see now why i call him:

raygendreau
Digital/Streaming-Guru

he is really a streaming/digital troll to this site that even tell lies now to further his game. And what the hell is he even talking about "few years" for blu ray only. Wow talk about insanity in that statement.
CD's is still being released by every label and artist and so is DVD's by every studio any fool would know that they would stop producing DVD's long before blu ray. It would be so cool if the administrators went in and changed his signature to Digital/Streaming-Guru instead of Blu Ray-Guru thats under his name because that coudln't be further from the truth the way he talks about blu ray and physical media here

digital and streaming are options but they are not going to replace physical media anytime soon for the average person. I have netflix, I like it as I can callup a movie anytime I want, can watch one on my ipod, etc but it hasn't stopped me from buying movies I really like simply because the disc looks better right now not to mention all the extras. I can see people saying that cds are dying with iTunes being around - if you are a new artist, putting your cd on iTunes makes more sense then trying to sell physical copies since it hits such a wider market and you don't need a big label - but dvd/bluray are not going away any time soon.
