Fantastic news! Saw this at a film festival last month and loved it. Came home and searched for it to buy, and fell into a funk. As excited about this announcement as if I actually had to wait a long time for it.

Been wanting to see this since the theatrical restoration started touring. Glad it finally dropped.

In a coincidence I recently saw The Swimmer in which Loden had a poolside scene with Burt Lancaster (and Lancaster, inadvertently or otherwise, pulled down her swimsuit top when they were supposed to be struggling in the water). But after the original director Frank Perry was fired, this entire scene was scrapped and reshot (by Sydney Pollack) with a different tone and another actress - Janice Rule.

Wanda is my kind of micro-budget independent film. It was made by a crew of six who had a
good story and plenty of hands-on know-how. I like this low-key, character-drive crime noir
drama very much. Barbara Loden was a seriously good writer and director as well as a
talented actress. She certainly knew what she was doing on both sides of the camera. I wish
she'd been able to make dozens more films. I was so glad when the Hen's Tooth DVD finally
came out, now I'll be glad to upgrade it. The liner notes will give newcomers to the film
some background:

Jesus. Just read a bit of a detailed plot of it. Seems like a roller coaster of ups and downs. Fascinated by it all the same. Never heard of it but I'm glad I have now. Some shots make her look like Michelle Williams to me. Female filmmakers in this period are of great interest to me, as little as I see of their work. Just culturally within film history,

Not the release itself, just the Amazon preorder. My preorder for Japon also got cancelled.

I thought this film was real amateurish, but it has its fans.

Might give it another chance when this disc is released.

That's how I felt about Shadows (Cassavetes).

Glad I waited and never shelled out $50+ or whatever for the out-of-print DVD. I saw this movie in a film class I took as an undergrad in college, and really loved the quietness of it. The ending is devastating. A beautiful film. This will be added to my collection of Criterion titles.

Pre-ordered this on Amazon, but it says estimated delivery is April 1. I'm confused as I have Amazon Prime, which usually means delivery on release date. Was hoping to get it this upcoming Tuesday.

I'm a bit intrigued by the restoration proces:
Quote:
In accordance with the film's original release in 35mm, the original 16mm color reversal A/B rolls were were optically blown up to 35mm color negative film at Cinetech in Valencia, California, and this negative was scanned in 2K resolution
Why did they prefer that over scanning the 16mm negative at the same (or higher) resolution directly? Isn't one more step in the pipeline, and optical printing in particular, potentially detrimental to the image quality? Does this step create a look that is so different, and that couldn't be created in post-processing?

They pretty much explain it right there to my understanding; it was originally exhibited as a 35mm blow-up and that's how they decided to transfer it. An extra step blow-up look.
