Default Excuse me, but

down here in New Zealand we are amongst the first in the world to welcome in the new day (anyone seen the New Year celebrations in Auckland or Sydney?). It's the night of the 27th and I'm thinking about getting the children's sandwiches ready for school tomorrow and then tucking up for a good night's sleep.

All this rumour-mongering is playing havoc with my bowels and I feel a little loose in that department... So thanks guys - please excuse me whilst I put some toilet roll in the fridge.

Hope it's all true mind!

the first of all is actually Kiribati, but it's common believe for many of us, Asians, that sunrise started at Japan.

My bowels are a bit strange as well. I had no interest to eat whatsoever yesterday because of this rumour

Well if Warner DO go over today, I'll celebrate by pre-ordering the Spidey Trilogy and Die Hard 4.0

haha, are you Japanese? guess not, well trust me there are two names for Japan in the old time, Nippon (にっぽん) and Nihon (にほん), and both in Kanji 日本, and we dont use Nihon, instead Nippon is the most and officaly used name for Japan (officially 日本国 Nihon-koku or Nippon-koku) such like on Yen (日本円) says NIPPON GINKO which is 日本銀行, and many Japanese companies names starts with Nippon. Nihon is more like a Adj. like Nihon Jin, and Nippon is more like a n. like Nippon-bashi (a shopping district in Osaka)

Do you really want me to get started?

The official name of Japan in Japanese is "日本". Those two letters can be pronounced either "nihon" or "nippon". The government doesn't tell people how to pronounce it. They generally use "nippon" for romaji because "nihon" will be pronounced "nion" by the French-speaking people (silent "h") but that doesn't mean they prefer "nippon" over "nihon" when they are speaking Japanese.

Usually people use "nippon" or "nihon" depending on which one sounds better in the particular context. Some have very explicit reasons, for instance the former Socialist Party of Japan (日本社会党) insisted that they be called "nippon shakai-to" and not "nihon shakai-to" because the latter can also be written "二本社会党" meaning "two socialist parties" and people were riduculing them having major internal disagreements (and they did eventuall split into two, so there was some truth to the rumor <- this is me desperately trying to stay on topic).

In most cases, it's just how they roll off the tongue. Different people may pronounce the same word differently.

Weird, huh?

enjoy

Are you Japanese? You know that there's a Nihon-bashi in Tokyo, right?

(And of course that Nihon-bashi is prounounced "Nippon-bashi" in a famous song -- go figure.)

hmmmm, I wonder where SONY is goin to get that money from, considering all the problem it has with PS3
Did i not read somewhere that the PS2 was making up for any loses on the PS3. The PS3 will soon stand on its own two feet when more games become available.

not japanese, but learn japanese.... so i've heard some info about old name, but I don't use it because I'm not so sure when to use nihon/nippon. normally i just said nihon.
I know there is a restaurant in jakarta called nippon-kan, then JVC is actually nippon vector.

oh yes i remember about clock lesson: pun and fun/hun

not really... it's all depends on the content, and also there is a guideline what to use, not just how u wanna use it. the other interesting note, Nippon sounds very much like Chinese pronunciation of 日本, which means in the old old old time Japan was introduced to the Chinese as Nippon not Nihon. again like my last post, Nihon is more like a adj. and not very commonly used.

True that. 日本 actually means "under the sun" which can also be interpreted as "land of rising sun".

amazon's sale figure a bit in favour of Blu. Number 1 and 2 still HD DVD, but the rest of it, the majority are BD now. Was completely different several hours ago, when HD DVD has the control of most of top 10 spots. Good, Sale is slowing down for HD DVD.
