Forgot to mention that I went to see the one night only event showing of ALIEN on ALIEN DAY. They presented it in RPX and charged modern RPX prices
![]() I have never really seen the movie before even though I have seen bits and pieces here and there over the years. Looks like they remastered it because I saw no signs of film grain or other stuff or anything associated with film. Sound quality was ok. I actually saw a bunch of kids in their 20's, some older folks and one parent with her damn under 10 child..............seriously? After the movie was over they showed what looked like about 10 mins worth of footage from Alien: Covenant. Looks like a step in the right direction. But seriously there was no need to show this in RPX and charge the full RPX Price. Did get a collectible ticket though. So my question is, with movies that were made in the pre-digital era...do they have to go thru some heavy remastering in order to be presented properly in modern day theaters? |

I don't think it is incredibly hard to create a DCP master from a 35mm source, but I believe less than 5% of films from the pre digital era are available on DCP. Now an iconic title like Alien has already been maintained/preserved and is ready to go, but a theater or festival that does a lot of classic screenings needs to have a film option as well (I saw Reservoir Dogs tonight at a 25th anniversary screening with Tarantino and the cast there, and that's a title which has a DCP made, but of course with Tarantino coming for the screening it was projected on film with a very nice print from his archive). The maintenance part is also important, cause if a film's archival elements are in bad shape, it may need significant restoration for a DCP, Blu Ray, or even new archival 35mm print creation.
I'd also note that RPX theaters just uses regular DCPs, so it doesn't need further special remastering used for something like Raiders of the Lost Ark's IMAX run. Last edited by xbs2034; 04-29-2017 at 04:51 AM. |

Whats wrong with a child under 10 watching Alien, unless he/she was making sound / disturbance? |

Nothing more "heavy" than your average restoration which ends up on Blu, which is itself a digital medium. But grain tends to be more pronounced in the home than in the cinema, it's just the nature of the beast, so I wouldn't read too much into that.

Hard to tell....remember I have seen bits and pieces of the movie over the year on TV so most likely I have seen edited versions for content and time. The kid was talking....a lot..... lol |

Trying to convince my friend to see GotGVol2 in IMAX but he insists on watching it in Cinemark XD.
Claims it's the same experience only cheaper. I'm like, 'no bruh. There is a difference between the formats.' I go through this all the time when inviting friends to the movies. They never want to go to an IMAX showing because it's "too expensive." They say to me "it's only a movie. Doesn't matter what screen size you see it on." Maybe it's the theater enthusiast in me, but I want to get the most out of my money by experiencing it on the largest screen possible with the highest quality in picture and sound. |

Never heard of Ultrascreen. Regal Pointe Orlando features true IMAX and the largest in the Orlando area; not the IMAX Digital.

Are you sure? Because the IMAX theater I go to closest to me is huge. I think it's something like 73'x55.' Definitely not the "LieMax" screen size.
Unless you're talking about Regal Cinemas in Waterford Lakes. That's the IMAX Digital. |

Yeah, unless it's an IMAX laser location (and don't see it on the IMAX website's list) and is showing new Hollywood releases, then its the Xenon digital projector.
Hopefully at least the projector can fill the screen, it might as 73 feet would be around the max size. If anything I felt the windowbox image was the biggest issue about using the Xenon digital projectors on the larger previously 15/70 screens. |

That makes sense. I remember seeing TDKR at that IMAX theater and the scenes filled the entire screen. When I went and saw BvS at the very same theater, the IMAX formatted scenes were projected in digital and was scoped in 1.9 not the 1.43 like TDKR.

No. The closest IMAX with Laser (4K) location is a nine hour drive away in Chantilly, Virginia. That said since the Buford screen is full-size and was originally used for IMAX 15/70 film projection it's a decent candidate for eventual laser conversion.

I am wondering why studios don't just come out and say about the movie, featuring xx amount of movies filmed in IMAX. I blame their advertising departments for this. If they don't say this, then we have to ask all the time. |
