I didn't say that it wasn't frankensteined, I said that it wasn't finished in 1.66 and I see nothing in your post to convince me of that.

Again: Any extra 'width' you're seeing is an illusion created from splicing two completely different frames together to make a more dynamic looking promo shot.

Does it occur to you that the promo shot was very likely used from two raw 1.43:1 plates, BEFORE colour-grading and cropping to 1.66:1, for working on VFX?? Isn't that possible?

If so, again, your reply seems pointless. They first created the unfinished promo pics, proceeded to crop the footage to 1.66:1 or 16:10 (which is larger vertically) for less rendering area & time and then created the respective 1.43:1 & 2.39:1 versions. This is very much a possible scenario.

By the way my original post was intended as a "Fun-Fact" post. Didn't want to start a pointless debate where everyone loses. No disrespect meant to anyone by the way.

Sure, that could've also happened but your work still offers no evidence of that. So yeah, pretty pointless posts all round.

But I sure could at least show that the shots we believed were basically IMAX frame grabs released by the studio, were in fact, tampered or "frankensteined."

Does it have to be as dramatic as that though Riddhi? Just because they cobbled together a few promo stills doesn't mean we've been shortchanged. A movie studio/company putting out photoshopped grabs, ye Gods. Next thing you'll be telling me that dinosaurs aren't real.

I am an educated person Geoff. I won't tell you the earth is flat or any such thing.

If you're talking about this - "The powers that be almost always win; we the people, almost always lose," it was a general comment on the state of the world today, coming off your Aliev Vs Predator quote. It had nothing to do with Lucasfilm.

wait a minute..................isn't there a way to see using photoshop if your claims are correct? Like the whole North Korea Propaganda debunking.

Well, the reason people debunked the NK propaganda was because they were bad photoshops. The still that Geoff is talking about is made up of 2 frames stitched together, but you can't really tell unless you actually compare it to the frames they used.

Well, it turns out that it's actually a composit of 2 different shots. -

1.
Attachment 172333

2.
Attachment 172334

Here's a rough comp -

Attachment 172335

If you look at the image titled "1" there's more image at the right side than the IMAX still. Which indeed means that the IMAX version was cropped from 1.66:1 and the scope version has more image at the sides in some scenes at least.
What Riddhi2011 is saying is that Geoff should not use the still as "evidence" that the IMAX footage was finished at the full 1.43 aspect ratio, because the it has been photoshoped.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up, but I found a still released around the time of the first teaser trailer for TFA.

As you can see, this shot is in the 1.43 aspect ratio, and comparing it to the trailer itself, there is no missing information on the sides of the frame.

So it appears that visual effects were finished at the full 1.43 ratio. Assuming this is correct, then I see no reason why they would render out additional image information that would not be seen in theaters. Therefore, the IMAX sequence was finished at 1.43 and not 1.66

And even that shot has had some fiddling, see how the smaller laser blasts from the TIEs are nearer to the Falcon in the 'IMAX' shot than in the actual frame grab, even though the ships are in exactly the same places?

Those are photoshopped promo stills so they're not a smoking gun one way OR the other, but in the absence of proof I'll revert to the default 1.44 aspect of 15-perf 65mm being what that sequence was finished in.

It would be funny to see how far this thing goes and if others take it to the extreme to file a lawsuit against IMAX, the studios and the theater companies that play IMAX movies. Even if a good lawyer was able to take on the case and proves that people are getting ripped off when it comes to IMAX movies, I wonder how the settlement will go? No way we are getting our money back for the price of an IMAX movie (20 or higher). I could see maybe the IMAX/IMAX 3d upcharge fees (up to a certain amount) but that's it.

wait where is the top bolt coming from? The rear TIE? If so shouldn't the TIE be rotated to match the bolt firing position?

Ok I admit, it was my assumption based on the promo still and it was a flawed assumption. Unless we get to see the actual IMAX frames, we can't prove how the IMAX version was framed in the theatres. I apologise.

oh wait.......what does happen to all those IMAX reels when the movie is done? They can't burn them and storage is probably a nightmare...

Few color release prints stored in temperature control facilities. Rest shredded.

Edit: Has anyone seen a movie in the French and German cinemas equipped with EclairColor?

Just came back from the Regal IMAX 3d Prime Time release.

Yep, shifting AR! I believe like 95% of the opening midevil scene was full frame IMAX. There are TONS of full frame scenes, but some didn't feel like it captured what an IMAX would capture the beauty of a landscape or cityscape. I sat dead center and the 3d worked well, but honestly it felt like my screening toned down the sound a bit. Bay didn't over do the constant switching of AR as much as AOE...it's there but only if you look to notice.

Yep there were more Dunkirk scenes for the pre movie trailers. My god they showed about 5 scenes, one after every trailer. Good grief that was over kill.

End credit stated OPTIMIZED for IMAX. Went by really fast...hmmm...

I am going to try to see it at Udvar this weekend.

I also saw the Optimus Prime Time at AMC Kips Bay IMAX, gave a t shirt for everyone and also were giving away lanyards and you could give them your address to mail one (I didn't bother with that). No trailers (film started within a minute or two of 7pm and you could tell some people walking in were surprised that it had already begun) and a really fast credits roll, which is appreciated as this film, like the entire series, is too long and poorly paced.

It was in constant aspect ratio (which I expected it would be based on Age of Extinction and some other films like Alice Through the Looking Glass) which limits some format spotting, but IMAX is holding to that 98% shot in IMAX number, and the flashbacks to the Vivian character's childhood as well as a couple shots in the military base looked like the 16mm footage to me.

Also, at that location yesterday, my friend and I tried out the IMAX VR center after seeing Resident Evil Vendetta. I did the Star Wars one and my friend did The Mummy. Was some impressive visuals (seeing R2 come off the Falcon ramp towards me was great), but were a bunch of glitches (minor in my case, pretty major for my friend and they had to restart twice before they got his VR working), and also was overpriced for something pretty short I feel (about half the cost of a full IMAX movie there).

Did they show the extended 5 minute Dunkirk scene?

No not really.

I really think I am going to wait for the reviews for Dunkirk..... the marketing team has been shoving that stuff down our throats for months....yeah we get it......it's coming but man no reason to show us several scenes of the movie 5 times during the trailers before the main movie starts.
