The theatre does not screen IMAx films anymore, not even liemax. They could not afford the cost of conversion.
I stayed in a hotel room for 3 days and just explored the beautiful localities, places of historic interest like ruined forts, gateways etc.
I had my Nikon with me, so.... But when you start earning, you realise the value of money.
Yes, that is a good approach. IMAX would just be a nice little bonus for you if you go and that's the way it should be.

In America, the Grand Canyon IMAX is playing Dunkirk in 70mm film IMAX on their 60 foot tall screen. This seems like a great opportunity for anyone who doesn't have a "proper" IMAX near them. Grand Canyon is an amazing place to visit. The IMAX thing is just a nice little bonus.

For when you get bored with nature's splendor - plop yourself in an IMAX theater to further wow the senses

How do you know which movies/theaters are in 2k vs 4k?

I only see movies in the Liemax when they are shot in the IMAX. But I go to see movies in our actual IMAX that aren't shot in the 70mm format. I love seeing movies that have some part of the movie shot 70mm film.

For those wondering - the BFI IMAX and, if Twitter is to go by, all other 70mm IMAX locations for Dunkirk have the first STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, the second BLADE RUNNER 2049 and the first JUSTICE LEAGUE trailers attached in 1570 format.

Due to the way UK cinemas normally handle trailers/ads, it was very welcome to see these trailers presented in the best way, with the best possible sound especially.

I hope that means the film themselves will release in 15/70 (though best guess is Star Wars will, Blade Runner won't, and Justice League could). Back when Lincoln Square was film only, they typically would only get trailers for 15/70 releases, though I definitely got a 15/70 trailer for Gravity more than a once, and I think Ender's Game as well, and those were Digital IMAX only releases.

Yeah, I figure the only reason they did this here is because many IMAX 70mm locations didn't play ANY trailers on Interstellar.

I agree, SW will bc IMAX 70mm footage, BR won't (while footage looks interesting on 1570, the grain, the colouring - MUCH more reminiscent of the first film BUT not accurate to Denis'/Deakins' established visual style. Actually just dropped a message to Mr Deakins on his forum asking if he timed the 70mm/IMAX 70mm prints of the trailer), JL MIGHT depending on if they go expanded AR (1.43) as that's easy enough. Very little letterboxing at the BFI IMAX for that one.

It might not mean anything re: the upcoming IMAX presentations of those films, it's probably because they actually had some space at the head of Dunkirk on the IMAX platter (this only being 107 minutes long) so they thought they might as well use it, whereas most of Nolan's other IMAX flicks push the platter length to its limits.

I look forward to seeing them at the BFI regardless. Only three more sleeps! Eeeeeek!

Warner Bros. wants there two big fall release movies advertised. Durkirk is short, so they added the trailers.

For those who care, the digital version of Dunkirk in IMAX is a direct scan of the 70mm release prints. No digital modification. You can see dirt here and there and it also has the very short IMAX two second logo a before the film.

The movie looked fantastic although I could not make it to a 70MM screening.

Oh...interesting. I like how in almost every IMAX presentation they have a unique intro to the countdown....so no countdown, just 2 second logo and that's it?

Did they have the 'I Saw Dunkirk' T-shirts?

I'm not going until next Friday so even if they do I doubt they will last until then.

Yes .If you have seen Interstellar, the small IMAX clip at the beginning of the 15/70 was what they had. Same thing for Interstellar digital IMAX. No countdown.

I saw this in both IMAX laser and 70mm. I live near an IMAX xenon screen.
I may check that out and looking to find a 35mm showing nearby too.

Nolan loves his little celluloid imperfections so he clearly didn't take those out, but he notoriously color grades the digital versions of his movies using digital tools to make sure it's perfectly accurate to the grade of the film print that's being projected. He's relentlessly detailed about that.

Correct. This is from the Interstellar website, back when it actually listed all the different presentations, and I doubt that the Dunkirk workflow will be any different (by "film elements" they mean IP materials, not prints):

Quote:
The digital presentation of INTERSTELLAR has been created from 4 and 8k scans of the photochemically-color graded film elements, fine-tuned in the digital realm to maximize the color and contrast attributes of digital projectors, and dust-busted to achieve the cleanest and most stable image presentation possible. The film was mastered in 4k for the highest digital resolution currently available.
The dust-busting thing is fair to take with a grain of salt, as Nolan loves to leave a few of those things in e.g. Interstellar's infamous 'Hairgate' but it will still have been digitally cleaned up to some degree and Spike's not wrong about the digital "fine tuning" that's done to the colour grading.

Actually yes the only time I saw Interstellar was in fact at Udvar Hazy. I don't remember the countdown. Maybe I am so use to the Digital Imax countdowns from Regal/AMC's D-IMAX.

I wonder how squashed things are in the standard theater presentations?

Are you In Houston? If so any idea if/when they will upgrade the Edwards Marq'e IMAX to laser?

If by standard, you mean digital 2k, it wasn't claustrophobic on an 18m*8m screen (~14.5m*6.5m actual image).

I would have preferred if they would have zoomed in to remove the black bars on the top of the flat wrapper, although knowing the lack of trained employees in modern multiplexes, I am glad they didn't try.
