Ohh damn.........

My guess is that there will be two lines. The first for the peeps who bought the entire marathon and the second anyone who wants to see certain movies. So after one film ends, they will kick everyone out, clean the theater real quick and have marathon holders come back in a line, let them thru first and then everyone else.

I didn't realize Alpha was going to be IMAX. So Thursday will be The Meg's last day in IMAX? We won't get to the area of the IMAX until Thursday afternoon so we might have to see it then. I wouldn't mind seeing Alpha in IMAX too.

I checked the IMAX showtimes of the one we go to and The Meg is playing all day Thursday but nothing for next Friday.

True, but the 12-track sound mix is quite a blast of aural fun

Yes, and first time to IMAX at all, so, wondering what scenes are opened up and if they used a different cam for those scenes/was it something they thought about when filming?

First time in IMAX:
Iron Man (2008)
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

As far as I know the first two of these were not released in 3D at all, and will be IMAX 2D. (I'm not sure if any will be shown in IMAX 3D.)

Thinking about seeing Iron Man and I missed Black Panther in IMAX, so that one, and maybe one more, one of the 9 or Capt. Am. First Avenger.

The Digital IMAX mix was good...not super aggressive....Slenderman had a more aggressive mix though :\ Saw both of them on the same night.

James Gunn has said the aspect ratio changes for the Guardians movies were planned in there from the script change, though I think other times they aren't given as much attention. I'm pretty sure at least with Iron Man 1 it is part of an open matte version, as a lot of TV networks and airline showings present films in 16x9, and some filmmakers will protect for an expanded 16x9 image rather than have their films shown cropped (even though scope will be the foremost framing).

Reminds me of flying to London on British airways a couple months ago, I'd say about half the scope movies were shown 16x9 by my browsing, in most cases probably cropped, but Blade Runner 2049 was using the expanded IMAX version, and wanted to see that version, but unfortunately it was not available on return flight (they did have The Death Cure IMAX version as well, and saw that instead, but I had already seen it in IMAX theatrically).

As for formats, Iron Man 1 and 2, and Incredible Hulk were always 2D releases so are staying that way of course, looks like First Avenger will be a 2D only IMAX release, and then titles which released only in IMAX 3D are playing in 3D at this festival (for same $8 ticket at theaters I saw), but titles which released in both IMAX formats (Civil War, and then Homecoming on) are all playing in 2D.

really? at Udvar Hazy the whole place shook everytime 'Meg' thwacked it's body against a boat, wall, glass, underwater submersible. Overhead sound cues took center stage when the helicopters arrived on the scene.

Yes ...but remember I see like 98% of my IMAX movies preview night at Manassas Regal Imax. If it is confirmed full frame for certain scenes, then I usually follow up a few days later. I was SHOCKED that Transformers: The Last Knight which had dozens of full frame scenes had a smaller crowd at the Sunday night viewing at Udvar. Smaller as in like 3 people including myself.

Avengers: IW opened up during the entire length of the film at the Digital IMAX but at Udvar it was letterboxed That really annoyed me.

Anyways going to that Regal is always a hit or miss. At least they got finally got their trailers audio lowered to an acceptable level not blasting it and then dropping the main feature volume big time.

As of this year, the only movie I can think of that had really aggressive audio was Ready Player One. The mix was amazing, especially during the race in the beginning of the movie.

With IW's aspect ratio at 1.90:1 for IMAX, it's unsurprising to have it letterboxed on a real IMAX theater like Airbus (1.37:1 aspect ratio)

Certainly does affect where I would see the film, as I would make sure to see it at the Empire rather than Kips Bay (it's scope screen is great for most IMAX releases, but means you don't get any expanded image area or titles taller than that)
IM1 was shot Super 35, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the effects were finished in nearer 1.78 or 2.00 back in the day (as you say, for open matte purposes e.g. TV showings) so they've utilised that for the select-scene embiggening.

I normally would have seen this at Arclight Bethesda but with some friends in town we went and saw this at the Uptown. While I missed the Dolby Atmos mix; visually, on a constant height 70 foot wide screen - the image was insane - the Uptown proved it's worth in giving a stand out presentation even in 5.1

Don't get me wrong, it did look amazing at Udvar. I did notice a bit of color difference between the standard and IMAX release as shown in the clips awhile back.

That last Maze Runner movie was open all the way thru in digital IMAX...don't know what it would have looked like at Udvar.

I guess I expect too much from a real IMAX theater. They could at least mask off the black bars to create the illusion that it is full frame.

So, leaving aside "true IMAX" arguments, (please).

I'd forgotten, I missed a couple of these in IMAX that were opened up, if I were to pick only 1, which was the most amazing in IMAX?

Capt. Am. Civil War
Black Panther
Infinity War

Civil War (which I saw at Udvar) opened up during the first part of the Airport battle scene. I think once Vision arrived (when he shot his beam to divide the heroes) it went back to letterbox. I was so confused by that. Why would they open up for 1/3 of the battle and not keep it throughout?

Infinity War, even if you don't see it in IMAX, was truly an assault on your emotions on all levels.

Civil War was one of my least favorite of the MCU. ...Was it only one scene that was opened up?

Yeah, I did see IW, but, not IMAX, and, I'm not sure I want to see it again, however, I did recall it was filmed with IMAX cams and opened up for the entire film, not sure if I missed much or not, I personally don't think the CGI is getting better, Thanos does not look real to me at all, along with some other problems.

Are you talking about an old 70mm film IMAX or a new Laser IMAX 4K? I just recently read about the Laser IMAX again, not realizing before that they can be built to 1.43:1 like the IMAX 70mm format. (1.37:1 is true (non-anamorphic) 35mm film aspect. Also the aspect for 35mm film photographic still cameras.)

They could just zoom and pan & scan for these screens, like the old fullscreen home video versions for 4:3 TVs j/k please don't hit me

Actually, I wish I lived near an IMAX 70mm so I could see 2001: A Space Odyssey.

that might have been a pick up, post shot scene, but yeah, that was an odd flaw.
