:\

10 mins on the final act? ehhhhhh
I saw a preview of it just before Assassination Nation and they were talking about giving the views a 1st person POV of things but I was like with the IMAX Camera?

Oh yeah, there's a lot of stunning 1st person POV stuff throughout the film, including with the IMAX cameras there in the end (including the big AR change shot).

And yes, I get that 10 mins may not sound like much but as someone's who's seen the film (in regular though), it makes sense as an artistic choice and nearly all reactions and reviews from the IMAX screenings at TIFF have been praising the choice and how well it works in context.

Ok, it may be my second viewing then for that movie. I will probably see it locally in digital imax (regal) then Udvar.

Yeah, 1.43 laser sites are the way to go with this movie, and even 10 minutes of continuous IMAX footage can make an impression (half that did with Force Awakens- my first time seeing IMAX laser).

Though indeed if AMC Empire will be getting the new laser system in for this, I think I will see it there over Lincoln Square (even with the smaller screen and less expanded ratio), cause I'm interested in how it looks and native IMAX footage is the best way to judge.

Damn you, IMAX.
This process has been creeping along for a while now, this isn't some new development to me (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post12890243) so I've already come to terms with it. IMAX doesn't mean shit anyway if they're just going to film it on an ARRI Alexa 65 with an IMAX sticker on it. I know that's not the case with First Man but even so, getting an actual 1.44 IMAX screening of this IMAX 15-perf material is going to be a mission for most people. Maybe not quite as much of a mission as man going to the moon, but close enough!

Yeah, it's not as much about how much footage there is, it's about *how* the format is used. Who cares if TF4 and 5 were mostly shot IMAX if Bay literally switches the AR between single shots in a single scene, as if he's using different cameras as A and B ones...

Anyway, and I'll put this under spoilers as I'm going into a bit of detail re: First Man
[Show spoiler]the thing is Chazelle is purposefully restraining himself from giving us the full-out portrayal of space travel throughout the first two acts. Electing to shoot almost everything in verite and 16mm, we only see really inside the cockpit in the set pieces, save for a brief reprieve in the middle of the Gemini 8 sequence where he and Hurwitz just do a big 2001 tribute and then shit really goes down. Same approach with the score, it's more functional, almost too repetitive, simple melodies and disparate elements...but then when we actually get to the Apollo 11 mission he goes all out on the majesty of it while keeping this intensity, and then imagine the IMAX switch once they land on the moon. It's similar to Dunkirk in a sense - while Nolan was more explicitly playing with building and building the story and narrative, Chazelle does that here with his filmmaking approach changing/evolving through the course of the film.

I thought they used 35mm 2-perf for most of the dialogue scenes then 16mm for any cockpit stuff.

If Chazelle had shot Dunkirk he would have removed that flag too

A lot of the home stuff was 16mm. The NASA stuff minus cockpits is 2-perf 35.

Heh, Nolan went out of his way to cut back on the nationalism in Dunkirk and while there were a few murmurings about it over here it was nothing like the shrieking nonsense like what's greeted the non-flag planting in First Man in the US. I dunno what that says about either country, mind you...

I thought AMC already had upgraded to laser/12-channel sound at the Empire ?

They did the 12 channel sound update but not laser projection. Which seems to be what they are adding now (makes sense that they would wait for the multiplex laser system to be ready)

You also need to keep in mind it's politically correct history rewriting.
It was an American project to beat the USSR to the moon.

And if you think that only not having the (messily handled in real life, it is not as smooth as people think) flag planting moment rewrites that you are being stupid.

There's PLENTY of stuff in the film contextualising that it's an American project to beat the USSR to the moon.

so - the 12 channel audio mix is encoded both on the laser dcp and the standard imax-digital dcp ?

is the multiplex laser system different than the one's being integrated into the 4:3 theaters?

Yeah, IMAX created their own DCPs so they have a lot of flexibility with that.

From what I understand the new laser system is specifically designed for smaller multiplex screens and 1.9 ratio. It also is much cheaper to install than the big screen laser system at around 600k, and apparently has an expanded color range over the other system.

They've signed deals to install 142 of these systems starting this year and going to 2022 (with expecting to sign more agreements) so it will probably end up becoming much more available than the current system

*le sigh* Just as Dunkirk didn't need to linger on shots of Union flags and rely on tub-thumping patriotism in order to tell its story of survival, First Man doesn't need to either. The clue is in the title: it's about framing the story of reaching the moon via that of a simple man, and is not intended to be a fevered polemic about beating those darned Russkies to the moon. Still, I love Dunkirk and I've got a sneaky feeling that First Man is going to bowl me over as well.

No, but the film The Right Stuff manages to keep it mostly "correct" without being tub-thumping either.

In reality, it was a big moment.
