Imax decided to put out LOTR starting this weekend, prompting an online backlash about poor timing.

Regular 70mm this week at Village East. 15/70 IMAX at Lincoln Square on the 12th (they actually had made and tested the print before the movie came out, I think hoping NYC would open up in September after New Jersey did):
“But most importantly, Tenet will finally be screening in NYC at five locations: AMC Lincoln Square, AMC Empire, AMC Kips Bay, Village East by Angelika in 70mm and Showcase Cinemas Jamaica (it'll also open on IMAX screens on March 12th at AMC Lincoln Square)” |

finally saw a movie ('Raya and the Last Dragon') down at Woodbridge Virginia's Alamo Drafthouse's 'The Big Show' auditorium and was thoroughly impressed - excellent sound calibration and playback, and trounces Tyson's Dolby Cinema which has the area's worst sounding system.

Saw the IMAX laser version of Tenet tonight at Kips Bay. Was curious to see how it would be done as have not seen a IMAX formatted movie there since the laser upgrade. Rather than present the whole movie in scope, they used pillarboxing throughout to get a 1.9 image and expansion for the IMAX sequences (have both pluses and minuses to this approach).
Just like in the 4K disc, the IMAX footage looked absolutely incredible, and I actually found the dialogue easier to make out than most Nolan IMAX mixes (pretty similar to what it was like in a regular theater, just a few lines here and there that are hard to hear, not like Interstellar where whole scenes are hard to understand). |

Does anyone know now that Regal is slowly opening up if museum IMAX screens will open up as well?
Been waiting for Udvar Hazy IMAX to open up and nothing. I don't get it. Missed out on GvK in that presentation as KOTM was amazing watching it there. |

I asked on their Facebook page, and they said a 'generic' "not yet" no timetable for it's reopening

I saw Nomadland at the Lincoln Square IMAX on Sunday. I recall thinking when I first saw it on Hulu that it was a film I wished I had seen on IMAX. And indeed it’s a beautiful film, plus the IMAX expanded ratio for it was really impressive in the landscape shots (actually stunning in the moment when McDormand is a forest and looks up at a massive tree, you felt a scope there that just couldn’t translate to home viewing).

Probably going to open up for Black Widow. I don't even know if Black Widow has any filmed IMAX scenes worth going to Udvar for. Shit I would pay extra to see the Snyder Cut at Udvar. |

speaking of large screens and Arclight specifically, there's rumors that Bethesda Maryland's location might have a chain interested in the complex space - and of course, it's the audio system that I really am not a fan of (sorry I can't divulge too much info here).

I close source of mine is saying that Regal Gainesville has the Screen X equipment but hasn't installed it yet. Regal Manassas is scheduled to upgrade their IMAX system to Laser and install a 4DX screen, but won't be ready for the reopening.
I feel like Regal dropped the ball. While AMC/Cinemark and other smaller chains made some profit to continue operating with limitations and restrictions, Regal just sat there and let a few good titles fly by. Word was by March/April is when they were targeting the eventual reopenings so they should have started their retrofits and upgrades. I went back to Gainesville for the RPX release of Mortal Kombat and nothing has changed. It does look like the RPX audio system has been re calibrated so it sounds better than before. Concessions were still limited to the basics like popcorn and soda but don't expect the full selection of drinks to be available. Nachos and Chips were the only things they had besides that, so no pizza, chicken tenders, pretzels and so on. I suspect it will be awhile before all the usual vendors start shipping to them again and the return of the full menu. |
