Anyway, the 25m screen I go to (the 70mm one) is great, !
The 70mm sound if it is for The Master is DTS Digital read off a CD. There is no other way to presently play a current movie in regular 70mm than that of Dts, there is no back up in case the system fails, the sound is no different than dts in 35mm. Older movies would not be in DTS, the movie Titanic had 70mm dts but movies before that do not.

Dolby EX was introduced on The Phantom Menace, it is simply 5.1 with an extra surround channel extracted, so it is 6.1. DTS has a version called DTS-ES but it never took off the ground.

What movie did you see in 70mm?

Seems odd that they're not using the IMAX auditorium since the movie theater itself is still open.

No, they are, it's just not IMAX any more. They kept the projector for a while, and I used to go often. But it did not play IMAX prints, probably for legal reasons. I know because I saw Transformers 2 there (anyone ever slept in a premium theatre before?) and also The Dark Knight, and neither of these films opened up to the 1.44:1 aspect ratio.

But I stopped going because another theater opened closer (the Victoria Point one on that same site), which also has a 25m screen, and at the time of opening had a bigger 3D screen than South Bank, which is where I saw Avatar a few times.

After I stopped going, I heard they installed a Christie 4K projector for Green Lantern. I believe the old 70mm projector went to Viccie Point's 25m screen. I like the seating and atmosphere at the old IMAX (South Bank) which is why me and the wife decided to see Star Trek there (Trek is special to us). And yeah, this, as I said in my other post, will be my first 4K viewing.

I'm pretty excited! But I love 70mm and hope it sticks around for a while!

Cheers! I knew the CD thing, but nothing about Dolby Ex. It's the South Bank (former IMAX) Christie 4K screen that has the Dolby Ex.

They used to make more movies with EX, George Lucas made movie theatres that were upgrading to THX for the Phantom Menace installed Dolby Digital EX. It was about 10k to do it back when Phantom Menace came out, if you wanted THX, then you had to get EX.

There were a good number of DVDS that had EX
3-4 laserdiscs (Phantom Menace included) had it (which required a whole new receiver)
I am not sure if blu ray supports it.

The format flopped!

I did. Space Station 3D in 2009.

3D really is something else in IMAX, too. I have a bit of fun with it on regular screens and my tiny 24" monitor, but it's been growing old for me recently.

In the particular IMAX 3D movie I saw, however, the format truly was used to immerse one in the picture. There was this shot of a press conference, and we, the audience, were really a part of it. There were cameras in the press conference audience that really looked like they were next to me. I was a part of that scene, and not just staring at it through a 3D window.

Not for $32.25....that is what the cost of a ticket in US dollars is for this theatre.

I think a really great comparison will be The Hobbib in 48fps IMAX 3D Digital vs IMAX 3D 1570....Anyone agree?

Yeah, it will be. But we'll have to wait and see the results. Current 15/70 is leagues ahead of anything else I've seen thus far.

It's going to be very interesting. James Cameron has said the showing a movie in 4K is not the issue, it's showing it in high frame rate, Roger Ebert as well. I will say I was totally caught off guard by the announcement that IMAX was going to offer 48 Hfr.

I stumbled upon this version of the movie accidently on the fandango website actually, most articles and lists that say its being deliverd in 7 formats(and then dont tlist all 7) dont list it as being available in imax 3d hfr. By the way, that list is out of date, theres a few imax 3d hfr playing in a few cities in wa for example and that only lists one.

So what are the 7 formats?.....anybody? - my count is at 6: 2d, 3d, hfr 3d, imax, imax 3d, imax hfr 3d- (if you factor in the different combos of dolby 5.1/7.1/atmos and the different 3d technoligies used Ie: reald 3d, imax 3d, dolby 3d etc. and the release with the dbox coding, you have way more than 7) according to theonering.net(I've seen this same list multiple places) the 7 formats are composed of 2 audio formats but if that was the case there would be more than 7 becuase there would be combinations(ie:3d with dolby vs 3d with atmos, 2d with dolby vs 2d with atmos etc.) Here is a direct quote from theonering.net,

"The Hobbit is the first film to be released in theatres in seven formats: HFR 3D, IMAX 3D, IMAX, standard 3D, and 2D, accompanied by Dolby Atmos 64-channel audio or Standard Dolby Surround."

they list 5 formats with 2 sound formats, they also dont list IMAX HFR 3d

Right, 5 + 2 = 7. It makes perfect sense as long as you don't think about it.

wow...you have to think just a tad harder about this, did you not read my post? They for sure left out imax hfr 3d, so that would make 8 according to them, but there is also the dbox coding, plus you cant just say there is a format with dolby and a format with atmos becasue any of them could use atmos or dolby, whcih would make allot of combos- Imax 3d could use atmos the 2d could use atmos, you could have a 2d with dolby and a 3d with dolby, plus think of all the other combinations. Either the 2 sound ones are formats(which is stupid) and there is at least 8 or they leave out the 2 sound formats(which would make much more sense) and there are 6.

PS....i just reread your post-"as long as you dont think about it"

As long as we are talking about the Hobbit, does anyone know what resolution the DI will be at? Isn't the camera used capable of 4k or 6k? Will we be able to see any kind of 4k showing?

I typically don't like 3D but I am really interested in seeing the 48fps presentation. My ideal choice would be 2D 4K 48fps but I guess that isn't happening.

It was filmed in 5k so you should go to a theater that has a 4k projector

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, having a theater with a 4k projector doesn't mean the movie itself is at 4k. For example, Lawrence of Arabia had a 4k restoration and it was being shown in many theaters in Minnesota. Despite several theater chains having 4k projectors, only one of them had a copy of the movie (aka DCP) that was at 4k. The others had 4k projectors but a 2k DCP.

The movie was filmed in 5k like I said, lawrence of arabia was an old movie with a lower available resolution like you stated, they arent going to downgrade the res of the hobbit.....i hope not anyway

Go see it for free. You can always go back a second time if you like it.
