That's really up to you. Since I don't think Beyond has special IMAX formatting or any other IMAX exclusive (which Into Darkness did as have other movies), it comes down basically to theater preference.

You may want to consider whether your IMAX or the AVX has a bigger screen, and what sound system you prefer (I tend go really like IMAX sound mixes, but I see films in IMAX in a lot more than Atmos and sounds like you really enjoyed the Deadpool Atmos mix). The one caveat is if your IMAX uses laser projection, I would probably go with that, but I'm guessing it is a digital IMAX showing (since there are around 30 laser IMAXes worldwide).

Atmos (AVX) all the way. Into Darkness has one of the best immersive sound mixes ever, the IMAX was overloaded and flat in comparison. No comparison really. Not to mention a lot of IMAX theaters have the sound levels jacked up to distortion.

IMAX also seems to over compensate it's large screen by making frontal stage sound louder than the surrounds (and the overhead speakers in IMAX-laser systems) "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" had an incredible immersive audio mix in Atmos, but in 12-channel mode the overhead cues were less prominent and masked because the sound from the screen speakers were obnoxiously set too loud

Just to make sure but Star Trek doesn't have any IMAX scenes right? My theater is not offering any IMAX 2D options so i wanted to know if it was worth it for me to sit through a 3D(don't really like 3D) movie if there's no special IMAX formatting.

thanks

They didn't shoot any scenes in IMAX for this one.

In IMAX laser Ghostbusters uses the full 1.43 ratio for its aspect ratio breaking 3D effects, and I presume the sequence near the end (which already expands to fill that screen in regular 3D and digital IMAX presentations).

Yeah but the dragon was used so they may open it up at times like Ghostbusters

Depends whether it was just used for aerials (RED seems to be carving out a niche in that domain) or for proper main/stunt unit shooting. Hopefully the ASC article will be up soon.

I wish I knew this before I saw Ghosbusters in a regular theater. I might have actually seen it in IMAX with laser despite it no being filmed with an IMAX camera.

Nope, only the end uses the full screen.
The 3D uses more but not all of it

Do you mean that there is still some letterboxing around the effects (which is how it is meant to be with all 3D presentations), or other than the end sequence everything cuts off at 1.9 (which would be disappointing as IMAX specifically says using the 3D effects with the 1.43 ratio is exclusive to IMAX laser)?

Still, great that at least some 1.43 material is used, I believe it is the first 1.43 laser title outside of native IMAX footage.

I could be wrong but I *think* they're simply saying that the 3D effects which break the letterbox boundary do so in the full 1.43 height as opposed to the letterboxed 1.90/1.85 'container' on the digital IMAX and regular 3D DCPs respectively (which is a separate issue from any shots which expand to actually fill the whole screen).

I see Jason Bourne, though apparently having no domestic IMAX release, is playing in Dolby Cinemas this weekend.

Anyone know if it is a Dolby Vision or at least an Atmos title? I do see IMDB lists it as having an Atmos mix, while I don't see it on the list of Atmos movies on Dolby's page, but I've found both these pages to often be incomplete/unreliable, particularly when a film is just released.

If it's in Dolby Cinema then it would be Atmos & Vision.

Actually, that's one of my issues with Dolby Cinema, they play titles in those theaters without Vision or sometimes even Atmos, and at least from what I see there is no difference in advertising/ticketing between these releases and the ones specifically mastered for Dolby Cinema (that's an advantage to IMAX IMO, it's not just the screen as you know you are getting a title with IMAX DMR and sound mix).

Though I did goggle "Jason Bourne Atmos" and found a review which said he had seen it in Atmos and was impressed by the sound, so seems like it at least has that.

Probably expected, but the teaser for Dunkirk confirms "Special Engagements" in IMAX film.

Though you have to wonder how many locations it will get, already a few sites which played in Force Awakens and/or BvS in 15/70 have gone or are going to laser soon (Lincoln Square reinstalled 15/70 for BvS but is rumored to be going to laser after their digital run of Sucide Squad ends, though they were also rumored to do it after Force Awakens ended so who knows). Sydney IMAX have said laser is delayed till 2017 there, and thus I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan pressured them so Dunkirk could show in 15/70 on the world's biggest screen.

I wouldn't be shocked if Nolan is forced to make this PG-13 rather than the typical R for war movie as museums sites may be most of what 15/70 capability they have left.

BFI IMAX will still be rocking the 15/70 I reckon, as there's no sign of a laser upgrade there either.

the info regarding Jason Bourne and an official Atmos mix/release is vague - I saw it this morning on Arclight's (Bethesda) "widescreen" screen and even though it can playback Atmos encoded movies, it certainly wasn't played back as such.

Can anybody in the Seattle area give me the lowdown on the Cinerama's screen size? Site and Wiki say a smaller screen is used for shows that aren't 3-strip, but doesn't give the size of the smaller screen.... and all the pictures online from Yelp seem to be maximizing the front stages screen width potential...

Meant to go up there to see Force Awakens but didn't bother since it was a 2K presentation, but I'm looking to redeem that by going for Rogue One... unless the Boeing IMAX is going to be the bigger and better option.
