It looks like Robert Jordan’s high fantasy book series The WheelofTime could be heading to the small screen, with Jordan’s widow and WheelofTime editor Harriet McDougal posting the news on her Google+ account.
“Wanted to share with you exciting news about The WheelofTime,” states McDougal. “Legal issues have been resolved. The WheelofTime will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio.”
The film and TV rights to WheelofTime were snapped up in 2008 by Red Eagle Entertainment, with the production company paying to air a pilot entitled Winter Dragon on FXX in February of last year, which starred Max Ryan and Billy Zane. This was seen as a last-gasp attempt to keep hold of the rights, and led to the legal issues mentioned in McDougal’s post.
Beginning in 1990 and spanning fourteen volumes, the series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide, meaning an adaptation is sure to be appealing to TV networks looking to capitalise on the popularity of Game of Thrones.
