I'm mostly enjoying this show now, even though I think it's struggling to hit home a bit. I've not read the books and there is a large plot point the show is presenting that is confusing me; that being, the identity of the dragon reborn.

From what I feel like the show has told me, the dragon reborn will be capable of channelling. However, so far we have seen:

- Nynaeve channelling (in the fight with Logain)
- Egwene channelling (when escaping from the Whitecloaks)
- Perrin channelling (when escaping from the Whitecloaks)
- Rand channelling

so I'm a bit confused as to how this episode ended with the "revelation" of who the dragon reborn was. Am I missing something important here? Honestly, I have felt like the show has done a very poor job of explaining this universe so far.
Perrin wasn't channeling.
I don't know if it's mentioned in the animated shorts or just a bit in passing in one episode but the Dragon's rebirth had to happen under precise circumstances which happen to be
[Show spoiler]Rand's
.

Yeah, I was talking to the wife about this. In the book, parts of the prophesies are constantly being talked about, referred to or even put in the prologues. But, in the shows effort to red herring all of the friends as the dragon reborn, they decided to leave parts out of the book that made
[Show spoiler]Rand the obvious Dragon reborn. The hair, the born on Dragonmount, etc
. I mean, for the reader it was simple. Everything pointed to them. So in the show they just skipped over all the evidence until this episode, and made it harder to discern. I dont think the baby being born was even alluded to in a previous episode, and thats a mistake because the reveal wasnt as strong as it could have been.

Your Perrin confusion is understandable, in order to keep the whoisit going, they kept the circumstances constantly mysterious, while keeping the crux of the novel the same.

As a book reader I was geeking out about the baby scene, as it was something I knew but not read and a aign the wishy washy narative might be soon left behind

Honestly, getting past the show created mystery of who is the Dragon Reborn should help it. It was a bit overly soap opera the way they handled it.

The second book - and therefore presumably the second season - introduces some very key concepts and conflicts for the overall mythology that should hopefully enlarge the scope and scale of the show. I could see them possibly combine the majority of the 2nd and 3rd books into Season 2, but they may not because there is indeed a lot of plot in those two. Honestly, book 5 through the end of the series (book 14) is where there's a lot of political/cultural maneuvering that the show is likely to cut down significantly, assuming they get to produce it.

He's not courting her, nothing wrong with courting. He's surrendering to her. The same thing that led Anikan Skywalker to the darkside in the Attack of the Clones.

*Quoting a franchise in which the goodd guys literally have to relax and surrender to the power to use it.*
*Also completely miss the reason why Anakin fell to the Dark side.*

I didn't miss the reason why Anakin fell to the dark side, however, most people did. They think it's was because his mother was slain, but he had already broken his vows as a Jedi before that. He tasted the forbidden fruit which caused him to fall.

It's because he was too ambitious, he should have left the order and made a career outside it. He's a mighty warrior, a proficient mechanic, being a Jedi wasn't the be-all-end-all for him but he wanted that sweet rank of master and be with Padme at the same time. Unlike Obi-Wan, who would have left the order had the Duchess of Mandalore made clear their relationship was serious back when he was a Padawan.

I am very perplexed.
I won't elaborate further yet to avoid accidentally spoiling things for the compulsive spoiler-clickers but there was one change that might be difficult to get out of and I don't know how they'll deal with it.

Did Moiraine and Suian have that kind of relationship in the books?

This is why it's best to wait for the Blu-ray or the 4K UHD release, then you can watch entire seasons at your convenience. From the teaser on tv, It look like it was a ripoff of Game of Thrones. Based on the terrible reviews, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets cancelled.

the reviews arent terrible, theyre actually more positive than mixed. it has received some backlash, mostly from book fans (some of it justified).

source material is actually older than thrones and its quite different. second season has been ordered early and they've been filming it for months. amazon is also very happy with viewership.

so you being surprised is gonna have to wait i guess.

It's obvious that Amazon is trying to compete with success of Game of Thrones from HBO with this series, but it won't even come close.

duh! so does netflix with the witcher. and appletv with foundation. GoT definitely paved the way but that doesnt mean this show will be cancelled if it doesnt reach that level of popularity.

IIRC it was hinted that they were or used to be "pillow friends" which was the Tar Valon euphemism for that.

How are they supposed to do that when no physical release has been scheduled and likely won't be?

Everything is a rip-off of GoT from here on until the end of time, is it? If you watched the show at all you would know that it leans much more toward LotR.

I've finished the season now, and while I found more positive than negative I can't honestly say I was enamoured by this. I've never read the books (and I'm not sure if this show has tempted me to start them), but this felt like a bland story with characters I don't really care about.

And yet, it did have some moments of magic. There were several times, mostly in the earlier episodes, where I became quite wrapped up in what was going on. Moiraine stands head and shoulders above everyone else as the most interesting character, helped by a good performance. Some fascinating dynamics were developing with Mat and his relationship to the rest of the group. And Egwene managed to break out as the one group character that could develop into something more.

Not much else worked that well. Largely, I was a bit confused by the world and story which was rarely made clear, to the point where I kind of gave up caring. And the casting only lends to the bland, cheap feeling of everything. Too many of the characters feel empty or just one-note. The tone kept shifting from brutal and gritty to generic fantasy to Xena/Hercules. And I don't know where the show's large budget went, but it's certainly not on screen.

There IS a solid core here and I could see myself coming back for season 2, but the show has work to do.

Ah and yes it definetly felt more like Lord of the Rings and not like Game of Thrones.

Thanks, it's been awhile since I read the books and didn't remember that aspect of their relationship.
