No takers? Well, we’ll give that one awhile to simmer a bit then to allow other readers (you know, those lurking *scientific* types) to try to figure that one out.

I’m thinking that Marty’s open letter from several weeks ago to his daughter (via the Italian news magazine L’espresso) about “beautiful images with affordable cameras”…. http://www.alexandrosmaragos.com/201...en-letter.html

was a subtle preamble to this official announcement - http://www.latimes.com/entertainment...#axzz2qhogtmIv

b.t.w., heads-up as Debra will be posting an article in no more than a few days about the state of film labs on da Cow….http://library.creativecow.net/features/ that’s in contradistinction to, da Bear… http://bearcreativestudio.com/

The positives of film outweigh the negatives (if you can even call those that). You can't claim something is better than the other when it can't even surpass it in every area.

I'm still waiting for that 70mm replacement.

Oh, you just got it? I've been playing for over 100 hours now. I don't want to beat it, it's too good. 62 missions in. Not including the Strangers and Freaks side missions.

Yes, I am having a final fling with the PS3 as I now have the PS4. Just waiting for the big guns to come out. GTA is fantastic, but I have only done a couple of missions, been busy with bioshock infinite before that.

35MM film as a delivery format is out of date. A good 4K projector, uncompressed digital sound (7.1 or Atmos), will beat a film print easily. Not to mention you could run that 4K digital rig 24/7 and the image doesn't degrade (other than lamp brightness, which also happens to 35MM projection).

Speaking of 70MM, JJ Abrams announced that he will NOT be shooting any IMAX format for the new Star Wars. It's too cumbersome. Cameras break too often and are too loud.

Didn't one get broken on set of The Dark Knight Rises?

After the Paramount Pictures announcement, it should be interesting to see if Warner Bros. delivers film prints to any U.S. theaters for Transcendence (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2209764/ )

for I think many here remember Wally’s anti-digital anything ultimatum at a camera expo I attended back in 2010…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ly#post3545181

Well, the answer to one of the movie trailer question was Interstellar (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816692/...ef_=tt_dt_spec)

Too bad, as Paramount Pictures is the U.S.A. theatrical distributor.
Are you saying what I think you're saying? I'd imagine Paramount's announcement doesn't include movies currently in production, or already done.

It won't beat a new print setup properly. But I would still take an old print, damages and all, over digital. You're going to have to accept than some people like the 35mm look, and flaws.

I don't care if SW won't be filmed in 70mm. It's still being shot on film. I guess that means you won't be seeing it.

Yeah, the same people who prefer VHS over DVD/Blu-ray, mono to surround, etc. They're hopelessly stuck in the past. What are you doing in this thread? 4K is digital technology. Not to mention there will never be 4K plasmas.

It will still be digitally projected. I wasn't talking about capture methods.

I personally prefer the look of 35mm film projection (let alone 70mm or IMAX) as opposed to a digital projection. However, considering that theaters these days have no idea how to run a projector (film or otherwise), I'd only want to watch a film print at a theater that knew what they were doing.

For a run of the mill theater, a digital projector will look better than a film one as it is not as difficult to maintain. I remember seeing previews for Robin Hood on a digital projector and then I went to see the actual movie on film. It was the day of release and the print had a weird green scratches on it much of the time and it was all washed out as the preview looked far sharper, brighter and more detailed than the film print did.

However, I find that the new 4K projectors, especially with native 4K material such as Lawrence of Arabia come close to 70mm theatrical prints. And if you get a very high quality 4K scan of a 35mm sourced movie like Taxi Driver, you are essentially viewing the camera negative instead of a 4th generation copy. I don't think we'll ever get a digital equivalent of the magnetic track sound on a 70mm print though.

Here is an article comparing "The Master" in 4K vs 70mm prints:

Unless Paramount makes an exception to their own rule, (although shot on film) Interstellar will not be released on 35mm film, if you were planning on seeing it that way at a local theater which still has film projection.

However, on the other hand, Chris N. might have the influence to make such an exception happen.

P.S.
b.t.w., Paramount sales reps were informing many bookers (to the theater owners) of the ‘no more film print’ news back in mid-November, but everyone kept it on the down-low.

Who will be the next domino to fall? Place your bets ladies and gents….
WB, Fox, Disney, Sony?

Does this apply to IMAX 15/70 prints as well?
