Still I wish you could say something more about this news. It'll pretty seriously change the whole format war. With blockbusters like Shrek and Transformers combined with very cheap players could be really bad for the blu-ray camp. The new buyers will have VERY hard time to choose between the formats.

Can we expect some announcements PDQ from the BDA companies regarding the bloody obvious?

Receivers and players are hitting the market know, specifically from Pioneer. Close Encounters will have both Dolby THD and DTS HD MA.

@paidgeek:

Any info on whether or not the PS3 will be able to send out the bitstream of these high end CODECs to external decoders? Is it even physically possible?

I don't have any new info on the PS3 outputting lossless codecs and I don't know if it is technically possible.

dvdtown.com only lists DTS.

As recently mentioned, it will have both Dolby THD and DTS-HD-MA, 24bit for both.

Keep up the good work
SM3 looks very good and is a bit more consistent than Casino Royale. I don't think there will be anyone disappointed with it in this forum.

*sigh*
Do any insiders have any new info on the Paramount situation? Details? Explanations? Anything?

Is this a permanent (as-far-as-we-an-foretell) thing? Temporary? How many titles are involved? Anything at all?

And do any of you know what the BDA will do as a response to this?

I find it very interesting because there are definitely a lot of people like him out there that will ask themselves the same question. Logic (and the comments from the Insiders) tells us that the basic movie functions on the upcoming discs should work flawlessly on pre-1.1 players... but then again, we're not the ones who need convincing...

So I'm wondering if the BD studios plan to address this very question in a "more formal" way that goes beyond the scope of the specialized forums, so that people like the poster, will be able to buy into BD with confidence.
The BDA cannot speak for the individual hardware companies. Companies can do dumb things and cause confusion, but forums like this help to clear up problems quickly.

To any "Blu" insiders. I plan to have initiated a class action suit. See my separate thread in the General section. Do any of your organizations have legal representatives that may want to provide advice? PM'ing me is OK.

Thanks,

That's ridiculous, you have zero grounds for any lawsuit for them not supporting your format of choice.

If you want them to change their minds, buy the majority share of viacom voting stock and then return the check.

Now that the news is official, I would be very interested to read the opinions of paid and penton-man on this.

This is a big time shock.

Penton-Man will not be commenting on it for now. That actually makes me feel worse.

Can you guys convince Fox and Lucasfilm to release Star Wars on blu-ray this holiday season and have players from Sharp, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung all for MSRP $199 with TrueHD, DTS-MA and 1080p?

Cheers,
~doby

I seriously doubt Penton and Paid can comment on this. It's very sensetive, and I think we'd all do well not to ask them. I'm sure they'll pass on what they can when, and if they're able.

They're good guys, and they're on our side

We have a good working relationship with the Paramount technical staff and they have told us repeatedly that they would like Blu-ray to become the single dominant format. The primarly reason for their support is that bandwidth and disc capacity are a nuisance with HD-DVD. That said, I think they were made a very generous offer (as was Uni) that was too good to pass up.

You have to recognize that there is little if any money to be made on either format at this moment. The cost of promoting a new format has to be amortized over later years when it hits the growth curve. If you can get paid to support one format, that is real money you can bank, while the opposing format potentially gains strength and grows into a substantial installed base of players. So fast forward a year or two. Your support for pay deal expires and what do you know... you get to release the same movies all over again on the dominant format with healthy sales numbers.

Good to know and an excellent point. 1 year is not that long.

I like what you are saying but is there any announcement on the length of this deal?
Likewise, is it limited in some way, since Speilberg's films are not affected. Are there any others that are not?

Thanks for the insightful input, I hope what you say is true and that the strength behind Blu-ray will keep it strong and within a year we will see more Paramount releases on a stronger blu-ray foundation.
It is still early in the game, and yet we all act like it is the final battle. This has a ways to go until it pays off for everyone.

The EU is already investigating this. They wanted any evidence of payments for exclusivity over choice AFAIR.
