Any insiders feel like giving the latest state of affairs in Japan?
I'm partially shilling for a thread I started in the movie section about how well it looks like the latest Pirates 3 movie is going to do in Japan. ![]() https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=25512 I would be interested in hearing what any insiders think about that situation with the #1 box office draw in Japan this year getting released on BD there in the next few days, along with whether some important parties (Warner, Time Warner, New Line, and Universal specifically) are paying an appropriate amount of attention to what is happening in Japan. --Darin |

Dear paidgeek,
"good" old highdefdigest (disturbingly still the most influencial online HDM review source...) is reporting that your upcoming "Damages: Frist season" BD release will provide "standard Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround only" - making it the very first SPHE release without lossless audio. I fully expect this to be false information but would still like to hear official word from you! Thank you very much as always. http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...n_Blu-ray/1210 Little feedback - Close Encounters is another splendid SPHE release - great packaging, outstanding transfer. It really does Spielberg's first HDM release full justice. Little "request" - I would very much enjoy SPHE releasing other "true special editions" like CEotTK. Warner is doing an outstanding job (for once) with their Bladerunner and Harry Potter specials this quarter. Can we expect simular treatment from SPHE at least for upcoming classics like Lawrence? (-not just standard packaging with a fancy (slip) cover but a true collectors piece) Last edited by TheLion; 12-01-2007 at 08:36 PM. |

Let’s just call a spade a spade shall we…..and cut to the chase. That whole mess of a thread they have there has little to do with Richard’s theories concerning audio quality and that is hardly the reason why the attack ants were let loose en masse. Amir promoted the VC-1 codec as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Nothing could compare to it. Don’t you remember the months and months of chastisement of MPEG-2 codec and then the AVC codec? And then more recently, the campaign to convince viewers that low bitrate VC-1 is transparent to the source. Richard dared to debunk that gospel weeks ago by producing (out of his own pocket) a title using different bitrates on the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions and went so far as claiming after the release that in some cases AVC was a superior codec to VC-1 ! He summed it up in his own words nicely in his last post…….. Quote:
What I find especially nauseating is that Ken the Hammer (the super mod) interjected his own opinion at the end, rather than keeping his mouth shut – which he should have done as a moderator at a “neutral” forum. Ken did the same damn thing when Bill Hunt last came on to AVS to answer some questions and he was pummeled unmercifully by many, to which Ken was a contributor. I’m just glad that I got that referral into Richard on page 21 regarding people in the biz before Richard decided to bolt because I would say that those three individuals are more familiar (and have more experience) with the Red One camera and Red workflow than anyone else outside of the folks in Lake Forest. I’m content in that I feel I did my little modest part to get him on the right track to give us another Blu-ray production that pushes the envelope for video and audio quality. It’s nice to see some folks made the effort to thank Richard at the end of that thread. ![]() P.S. That forum is good at one thing.......pissing off a broad range of insiders (as long as they don't work for MS) as yesterday it was saleen001 and today we have Richard Casey. ![]() |

Hopefully Richard Casey will post on here. ![]() We like people that develop better encodes for the BD format. |

One last note……. as I had forgotten. Back awhile, Amir accused Richard online of not making a reasonable attempt to use MS to do the actual encode on his title….. in order to assure the best possible quality. Richard countered by going into detail with timelines concerning the names of the exact people that he attempted to *connect with* to get something accomplished with MS with the conclusion that after about 2 months? of trying, it was just in vain and leading nowhere. Red ants immediately jumped on Richard following that revelation and multiple posts were deleted with the Insider’s thread over there being locked at least once. This whole affair with Richard on AVS has history, as I stated above, and the recent thread that PaulGo linked us to is just the tip of the iceberg. |

You're spot on with regards to Ken H's comments. Love how Amir then later tried to make it seem like Ken H meant that people were just talking past each other. Yeah right, if that's the case, then Ken H picked quite an odd phrase (out of Rich's long post) to use to point that out. Makes no sense. Then of course the "screen shot queen" (probably Dave Mack's best friend ![]() |

To add insult to injury after Richard's comments Amir had the nerve to want to hijack the thread by saying now that Richard is gone we can have some fun...
That guy is a sicko! |

I don't know. The last couple pages of the thread were not red vs. blu, vc-1 vs. avc, pcm vs. lossless or lossy, it was more about Richard Casey not trusting digital technologies. But in the end does it really matter? It's very clear he's more artist than engineer, and he's doing everything he can to create the best possible product. That's the bottom line.

I agree. I think that he is a demented loser who always wants to try bullying. I think his self image has somehow become tied up with the success or failure of HD-DVD. In the end, he essentially is a pathetic little man trying to promote a product of lesser quality.

I would say he's more of a boy, the type of boy who got picked last always. Then when he got older and learned the ways of the darkside, he became the "picker". Now if someone doesn't pick his side, he sends his minions after them. Sad, really.
