The demo discs were a good idea, not eventhe 360 incl one, but i guess since u can download demos and trailers, Sony and M$ dont see the point?

One thing that's been bugging me for the past couple of weeks is the lack of PAL playback support in the PS3 (for DVD video, not sure if this is even an issue for BD). I have a number of PAL discs that I can only play on a normal set top DVD player, but the PS3 has replaced that set top DVD player for 99% of my viewing, and I'd like to retire the thing if I can.

Soooo, can you nag someone at Sony to enable PAL playback support in the PS3 in a future firmware update? =)

Thanks.
The US version and probably Japanese version of the PS3 has only NTSC playback. The HK, SG and KR versions support both PAL and NTSC after the second firmware update.

It is up to SCEA to enable PAL into the US version.

Default Labyrinth on Blu?

paidgeek,

I know you have to be careful - I am looking for vague indications at best

Sony is releasing a special anniversary edition of Labyrinth on DVD August 14th. Is a version of this film likely to come to Blu-ray soon?

Would definitely buy it once it is on Blu! (already have an older edition)

Thanks,

Josh

Mattym has beaten me to it... I'm also from the Uk..

Agreed that if your a U.S owner then chances are you'll probably get to hear about it but thats not the same as over here or elsewhere in Europe. Also, did think about the point made about Trailers on the PSN store but again this is'nt really impressed upon people downloading them that these are Blu-ray trailers. I know on the U.S store for example it at least says "Blu-ray film" but in the UK store all it says is "Movie Trailers". You could take it one further with these and put a quick "Exclusive to Blu-ray" or "Available on Blu-ray" clip at the start of the trailers so you get some mind-share with PS 3 owners here.

Thanks for your time PaidGeek, not really expecting you to be able to change these sort of things over night seeing as it's not even your department but your probably the closest thing we've got to a Community Liason Guy with Sony over these kinds of things..thanks mate for all your help with this kind of thing.

I second everything that Smackos has said. Blu-ray is an afterthought in the French PSN too. You have to dig deep to download some BD trailers, and quite frankly their lineup hasn't changed much since last March.

Paid, how about establishing a partnership between Sony and Apple, since their Quicktime section is already an established area to get hi-def movie trailers?

It would probably cost much less than creating a movie showcase channel within the various PSN, and you could easily flag the titles that are coming to Blu-ray with their release dates in their specific countries.

PaidGeek,

While you're at it, perhaps you can pass along the need to convert 720p games to 1080i. This is REALLY holding back the video game sales for Sony. It's making it appears as though game sales on that console are bad (which they are) because people like me won't buy 720p-only games. However, there have been a lot of games I would have been willing to buy if they displayed at 1080i.

Just a thought.

Neither Henson film is getting HD'd right now,

If you want to see Labyrinth in HD, currently it's in a limited re-release in theaters

"A Passage to India" (another David Lean epic) might also be glorious in HD BD, though the review of it at imdb.com rates it sort like comfort food for thought.

Sorry for being off-topic, but have you thought about wireless headphones?

paidgeek,

Can you shed some light on Amazon's unusual pricing of Spider-man Trilogy? It was originally priced at $69 and now its priced at $89.09. Its seems rather odd Sony would force Amazon to increase their price on such a pivotal holiday title if Sony want to make some inroads in Blu-ray adoption.

The pricing for the trilogy has not changed from our side, so if they increased the price, they decided to do so for their own reasons.

I tried to check this, but I can't even pull it up at Amazon.

Thanks Wicky - any reason why not? Seems it is a Sony property with a new DVD and a past superbit - natural fit for Blu?

Labyrinth will need to go through a heavy restoration, I was quite disappointed with the results on the DVD format. I have the SuperBit edition.

The optical special effect matte lines need to be fixed. It leaps out at you. If it was that bad on the DVD, imagine how bad it will look on Blu-Ray!

Because Henson doesn't have the cash to back it, and would probably wait for a future push when there's a bigger chance of going black quickly. Sony is the distributor, they do not own the film

I'll see the 35mm reissue later this week in the Philadelphia arthouse chain (aka mafia owned, will toss you out on your ass for cellphone rings and kill your dog), I'll report back how it looks in 35mm

Both DC and Labyrinth were products of that era of Sony compression, a lot of EE especially on scope films.

Paidgeek,

If you don't have the information handy, don't worry about it. I'll check the back of the disc when I get home and report back here what I find.
