I would be very happy if Oppo were to return to making home entertainment products, especially certain ones in particular.

I’ll try a 203 at msrp with warranty... would be nice.

Eventually other players may have the functions I want from the 203.

Was in a local Target (USA) today, I noticed they greatly reduced the size of
their physical media section (my guess is about 1/3 to 1/2 the size it was
about 1 month ago). The shelves that previously had DVDs/Blu-rays are
filled with books (the Vinyl LP section is the same size though).

(The Walmart across the street still has the same size media area that they've
had for years)

Less shopping in-store, more online. It’s that simple.

They are doing the same thing at the Target near me. But the only time I ever bought discs at Target is when they had they're B2G1 sales or certain movies were discounted for RedCard members. As with many others here 95% of my disc buying is done online.

I walked into a Best Buy last week for the first time since February because I wanted to grab the 4K Steelbook of Whiplash as I don’t trust those being delivered. I was thinking we should be seeing another B2G1 coming up soon from Target, but I will probably be ordering whatever is in my haul this time around.

Anyone here have or know of anyone using a Acronova Nimbie in conjunction with My Movies for creating their media server? If so, what do you think about it?

Never heard if it. I have used Plex and JRiver.

I still use those. Plex for video and JRiver for audio.

Bitmovin: Increase in Streaming Means Increase in Costs

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO—COVID-19 stay-at-home mandates are proving to be a double-edged sword for the streaming and OTT industry, as viewers in droves have turned to these services to keep them entertained but in the process have driven up their costs, according to a new report from a video infrastructure provider serving digital media companies worldwide.

The latest edition of the “Video Developer Report” from Bitmovin revealed the top challenges facing video developers, the state of the video streaming and OTT industry and other key trends. Findings come from the company’s fourth Annual Video Developer Survey.

According to the report, reducing costs topped the list of challenges facing respondents and replaced concern over complex technology, such as “live low latency,” as the No. 1 challenge identified in the 2019 edition. More than half of respondents identified the cost of items like bandwidth and storage as the greatest challenge—this despite the majority of respondents holding technical roles at their companies.

The results indicate there’s a clear belief in the industry that video streaming services must focus on cost optimization as a means of survival, the report said.

The report noted that although the COVID-19 shelter-in-place requirements propelled growth around the world in subscriptions to video streaming services and hours of content viewed, uncertainty over the global business landscape is resulting in companies scaling back on new projects as a cost control mechanism.

When it comes to the biggest challenges to remaining competitive, the results showed “reducing cost” and “taking services and assets faster to market” topped the list.

We all know what ‘reducing costs’ means.

If they do have a sale I will take a look but at the moment my wish list is filled with Criterion, Kino, Olive, Warner Archive and other boutique releases. Target sometimes carry those but whether or not I pull the trigger will depend on what they offer.

If you are alluding to reducing picture quality - I don't see that happening over the long run. Yes it happened in the UK due to the massive growth of SVOD a few months ago. But that was just a "spike" which showed how fragile the UK's infrastructure is.

They will probably move on to newer more powerful codecs to reduce file size, at the same time maintaining video and audio quality. They won't get better - nor will they get worse.

According to many streaming enthusiasts, they already HAVE got worse. It was posted about some customers 4K experiences with the new codec in this thread a few pages back.

4K streaming is still a niche product. It represents probably less than 5% of all available streaming content. The providers are probably experimenting with file reductions and codecs which resulted in reduced video quality. We need VVC/H.266.

I think you need to read up on this Lee.

Nothing temporary about it.

From your article:

Quote:
Above are just two examples, but on average they need a 50% lower bitrate to achieve the same quality with the optimized ladder. The highest 4K bitrate title on average is 8 Mbps which is also a 50% reduction compared to 16 Mbps of the fixed-bitrate ladder. Overall users get more quality for lower bitrate, which is quite an achievement.

Streaming has that edge of potato vision quality to it.

Perhaps new codecs and even more aggressive compression will result in no change at all.
