I spent a lot of time at Sony's booth and private meeting/demo rooms and had great candid conversations. In regard to Sony's Dolby Vision firmware upgrade for TVs equipped with the X1 Extreme processor is now completed. Sony, being the premium quality company they are is in the process of thoroughly testing the update to ensure it works properly and does not cause any issues.
No date for the roll-out, but it is coming and is expected to perform meticulously to all of the technological features that Dolby Vision's HDR dynamic metadata has to offer. |

We'll get it when it's ready, and not a moment before. That said there are bound to be some real-world operational issues that not even the most diligent lab people can uncover, there always are, but hopefully no major boo-boos.
Makes me laugh to think of Sony using an OPPO or LG as the player when testing the TVs, though. I mean they'll likely have a means of playing back a DV signal using whatever black box of goodies they get from Dolby but even so, they can't let it go out to the public without testing it using consumer playback hardware...or can they? ![]() |

They might have something for 2018 of theirs to use, but it's not field tested yet, so no sea-legs on their own spinner if it exists. Best to just use an Oppo. |

Yes, they test streaming from all DV content sources, all DV capable BD players, hard drive content they have, DV signal generators and test patterns and one TV is at Dolby HQ for even more engineering testing.

Hey there Robert. So with all of this this testing, do you have any sort of estimate for when we should see Dolby Vision added? With the Apple TV 4k coming out, I am more excited/inpatient than ever. Have you heard any rumblings of any dates aside from the broad "end of the year" response?

I think it's a major disappointment that the x800 player wasn't designed to handle Dolby Vision. It was a very short-sighted decision. At least it could have contained the necessary hardware, so that a firmware update at some point could add the feature, like some other players are doing now.

Just translated this from an Italian article
"The wait is almost over: Sony will soon announce the arrival of Dolby Vision on some of its TVs. The new firmware, announced for a long time, should come close. An official announcement is expected in December. Supported models are the same as those already confirmed. So let's talk about the TVs with the 4K HDR X1 Extreme processor. Support should include all available sources, including Streaming (Dolby Vision is supported by Netflix in Italy) and Ultra HD Blu-ray." Finnnnnalllllyyyy |

I prefer to wait and get a good update instead of one that screws the tv. Luckily I am interested but I am not itching to have DV, I am happy with regular HDR working properly. |

I think Sony is taking a break and watching what happens with the market.
Sony tried to push 4K content using a 4K box that you would download movies to from sonys website. Being the 1st company to do that before anyone else, the box didnt really take off. It was about $800 at launch. Came with spiderman of course...... and a few other movies. Then 4K UHD discs came along. 3D is dying. Now HDR & Dolby Vision are the new thing that add extra flare to 4K. I dont think either company is going to side with just one option. Its like DTS vs Dolby. Both will always be around. In my honest opinion, Dolby Atmos kicks serious butt. I'm loving the fact that Disney is finally seeing the benefit of Atmos. They have always been a supporter of DTS MA during the blu-ray generation. As for Sony, I own their X800 player and love it. Maybe they will push a firmware to make it Dolby Vision friendly. Maybe not. But honestly, with some calibration, you can bring HDR to look like Vision depending on the equipment you have. |

As a bit of a Sony fan (I've loved everything Sony I've ever bought, bar a walkman I had 30 years ago which occasionally chewed up tapes) I'm really looking forward to what DV-capable TVs they can bring to the consumer table, especially if they're comparable in price/spec to the LG OLEDs.
I don't have a 4k TV, but having waited this long, I don't see another 5 or 6 months hurting. |
