Hate to break it to you, but that's the way it was theatrically.

They Blu-ray has been considerably lightened. The UHD reflects the theatrical grade - which presumably is Coogler's preferred version.

Is he on record saying he worked or signed off on the home grading?

It sure was dim, yep, but it wasn't brighter and yet crushed at the same time, if that makes sense.

Directors sign off on the look. He just isn't as vocal as James Gunn is about it.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite. I thought the pacing got worse as it went on.

Dolby TrueHD can be 7.1 as can Dolby Digital Plus. Yamaha receivers will tell you how many channels are present in the OPTION/SIGNAL INFO menu while it's playing.

For that matter, has anyone using an LG OLED witnessed this? I did just end up upgrading my display and have been enjoying my 65-inch B7A immensely otherwise. Night-time scenes look phenomenal in DV, and if I force the player to output HDR 10 only, all is right with the world (other than the fact that I'm not taking advantage of the DV grading, which is annoying.) None of the other DV discs I have exhibit these issues, or anything like them.

TLDR: I'm trying to figure out whether there's an issue with my display settings, my OPPO 203, or if it's really just the Dolby Vision metadata that's to blame for daytime scenes looking too dim on Black Panther.
I might be having the same problem. Not at home so can't provide timecode, but something starts to look very wrong during the fight between M'Baku and T'Challa.

Whenever the shot is mostly sky, the image gets really dim and washed out I believe. Also have OPPO 203 and B7A.

Static metadata never looked this good on my panel

I only have the TCL P Series, but I didn't notice this issue.

Reading through some of the comments on the details of the colors and the blacks here, maybe this has been brought up before but there is a pretty good video that someone did showcasing how historically Marvel has always graded their films in a super diluted fashion, muted colors and no true blacks - wonder if this is a symptom of what we are seeing?
