I'm flying real high today, under a precipitous blanket of thick white powder snow.
Are you flying high too? It feels like Christmas, finally.

By the way; 'The Favourite' won seven BAFTA Awards, and 'Roma' won four.

Yesterday 'Cold War' won the American Society of Cinematographers Award (ASC).
Amazing because it's in black and white, six different languages (foreign), and it has a 1.37:1 screen aspect ratio (old b&w 4:3 cathode ray tube TVs).
We're back to the late 40s through the 50s and 60s, the great cinema years. ...Just after Charlie Chaplin and the Charleston jazz club music.

Perhaps a little too geeky for some, but not for those (SMPTE membership - https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/be...ineers-1031488 , ACM Siggraph, etc.) who’ve been following Paul Debevec’s work over the years, so I’ll mention that last Saturday night on this side of the pond, among other contributors, USC ICT - http://ict.usc.edu/ received a shout out –

When I had a waterbed oh so long ago, the copper sulfate turned the water blue, blue, blue. Copper LED’s would be a huge cost saver.

To our great insiders, I know you've stated that you know why Disney is not releasing Dolby Vision encoded discs (and respect that you can't share that info). Still, in your opinion, will we see any DV discs from Disney released this year?

Respects,

Respects,
can’t say, as pretty much the only folks I now know still at Disney these days are those who work in development. With regards to them, I can reveal that they are currently being treated very well by upper management (ex. “need to take vacation time on such a such date(s)”…’no problem’, “need this”…’no problem’, etc.) because Netflix is luring so many folks over to their company.

Personally, I’m disappointed in the mouse house and DV home deliverables since they are one of the few facilities around the world that have had a Dolby Vision laser projector directly available for theatrical grading and so awareness to the format in general kinda all started from there.

I can only imagine that will result in quite a void in Pixar’s release schedule at some future point. Wonder how story quality will change going forward?

Check out my video from yesterday's HPA "AI Applications" program. This clip is with Kenny Lauer, of Rival Theory speaking.

Here’s part 2 of Kenny Lauer of Rival Theory presentation. Very interesting discoveries and advanced uses of AI.

Unrelated, but wanted to say, I'm thoroughly enjoying and learning this week with HPA's 2019 full schedule and we start at 7:30am and go through the evening non stop.

and specifically, with regards to this portion - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9gMJvPzDHE#t=42s

Robert, good to see you’re covering it on video for those of us not there this year, hope you’re enjoying the retreat and venue. In case Kenny didn’t reference it, this specific application of AI, for the most part, flew under the radar of the entertainment industry; nevertheless, was historic and worth mentioning - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...i#post14959271

With regards to the movie making space, since cinematography and cinematographers seem underappreciated as to their value relative to those of others by AMPAS recently , AI also has potential here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...i#post16015685 and I aint just talkin smartphones.

hypothetically speaking, if there were such a volleyball scene included in the final cut, there were actually plenty of chairs set up to watch it –

I won't post all of my videos. I'll just post a small selection to give everyone a taste of what's trending in Hollywood and broadcast for now and the future. It's a peak at the not so far away horizon of video and video distribution.

Here's another two more from the AI Applications session, with Jason Brahms of Video Gorillas.

Part two below:

to kick it back to the TV space for a moment, did our friend on the keyboards - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjsKgtszQo0#t=4m49s have anything to say during his presentation about 8K, 3D, etc.? (not sure if he’s spoken yet as I don’t have the schedule in front of me)

As a retired artificial intelligence specialist I find the advancements made in AI quite significant.

IBM's AI loses debate to a human, but it's got worlds to conquer

The tech was "surprisingly charming and human-sounding," and it's about to head out into the real world.

Robert, nothing from Peter P.?, I was hoping he said something about 3D for the sake of PaulGo and other 3D fans (with 8K serving as the vehicle).
Oh well, then how ‘bout any tidbits from Don’s presentation on ambient light?

P.S.
Note to motorcycle aficionados, of course not at the level of Jimmy R. (a professional stuntman and racer) on p. 420, but Don “has skills” too – a pic of him putting one of his motorcycles thru its paces at Laguna Seca raceway….
