That last part is true enough - did Avatar really have 22? - but it's what they're paid to do so I'm sure they're fine with it, and post on pretty much any movie is a time crunch, no matter whether you've got one deliverable or ten or twenty.

It'll be interesting to see how their position evolves, certainly. I think part of the content-derived data process is to create a trim pass and generate the data from that, but some workflows, diagrams etc relate to this first step as an automated process which can also have manual input. I'm sure that the manual input is first and foremost at the moment but there may come a point when it does become more automated and throwaway simply because of the continued focus on HDR over the coming years.

So I converted the TravelXP 4L HLG video to MP4 and it played on my TV in HDR. The TV automatically went into HDR mode. That's two HLG videos that play in HDR on my TV.

Looks like the 2016 Samsung TVs have been updated to support HLG. Nice!

P.S.
Oldtimers (Blu-ray.com members here from 2008 and thereabouts) might remember from back in the day that Peter D. is formerly of PostHouse, a post facility from the land of the long white cloud.

Newbies,
Think of P.D. most recently as the Technicolor supervising digital colorist for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themhttps://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Fanta...166347/#Review

Haven't tried the TravelXP video, but did download and play the Jazz HLG video on my 2016 Samsung KS98. Like yours, mine went into HDR mode and looked spectacular.

So either FW 1168 included HLG or the video is mis-labeled

If the former, that's really nice news.

I don't believe it's mislabelled. There are two versions of that video on that site - one is HLG and the other is HDR10. MediaInfo confirms that it's HLG.

TravelXP is also HLG, and it also plays in HDR on my TV (although I had to convert it to MP4 for it to play.)

Samsung did say they would update the TVs to support HLG, so it looks like they kept their word. I wonder if we also got an HDR10 Plus update secretly as well.

Anyone know any other HLG videos online?

^ Heat, all I’ve heard about for public access is the satellite related HLG content, e.g. http://www.flysat.com/astra19-uhd.php

That would be my message to all those in Strategic Marketing departments. But getting there is difficult as the DCI system needs some overhaul.
Notice I cryptically typed “etc.” in thee above post (after Samsung, Sony) because although not revealed at CinemaCon 2017, Dolby is developing its own theatrical sized direct LED display.

Default HLG vs. PQ

HLG vs. PQ10 (i.e. HDR10 without metadata):
https://tech.ebu.ch/publications/sub...r-distribution

"There an interesting new technical report just out where 4 independent test labs (the IRT, Orange, the RAI and the EBU) teamed up to perform subjective tests comparing HLG and PQ10 as well as native SDR vs SDR from an HLG bit-stream.
Results show PQ10 and HLG providing a similar user experience [Test 1] and also that HLG backwards compatibility works from a user experience point of view [Test 2]."

^ Science , as opposed to what masquerades, or purports to be science, on some audio video websites where anecdotal opinions, non statistically significant findings and essentially infomercials are more the norm.

P.S.
For the curious, from another angle, showing the filming of the couple cycling, used as one of the test sequences for the study....

The camera is mounted on the ATV 4 Wheeler to the left…..

Dan, that’s ^ certainly easier than the upcoming Paris-Roubaix.

Now that the predicted display technology has been shown following this press release – ‘The Samsung Cinema Screen is currently undergoing the DCI certification process and recently completed compliance test at Keio University in Tokyo’ (https://news.samsung.com/global/sams...een-technology), how about an announcement in regards to the distribution master for these next gen cinema displays, i.e. complied to what during the certification process?

Meanwhile, without changing gamma, if the brighter and brighter laser projector folks desire to toot their horns as long as possible, upgrade the current DCI spec for projectors to 16-bits per component and higher Mbit/sec interfaces to help enable HDR properly.

Hi, how do I get HDR to activate on my 4k tv using YouTube? PS4 Pro does fine with HDR games and Amazon but YouTube won't activate it or the tv won't say it is an HDR video coming thru. I've tried YouTube with my Roku and PC, same thing. Thanks.

Does HDR turn on automatically when playing a UHD blu ray? I have an LG OLED55C6V and a Samsung ubd-k8500 blu ray player. When I play a 3d blu ray a message pops up saying it has detected 3d and it is now playing and I was wondering if you need to turn HDR "on" on these devices or if it should play automatically?

If your TV has HDR capabilities, it should be automatic if the HDR media header is correct on the 4k disc, stream, or broadcast and the HDR format matches what your TV is compatible with.

I have the OLED 65C6P and it does turn on automatically --

The TV will display HDR on the top right and either DV or HDR10 on the top left. At that point, it will also change the picture style (Bright HDR, Standard HDR, Vivid HDR and Game HDR)

Things to check:

Firmware on TV - make sure it's up to date
Samsung player - Make sure HDR output (or equivalent) is turned on
Cables - Make sure you're using a cable with a compatible cable to get 4k and HDR

And is the cable going directly to the TV or through a splitter, receiver, soundbar, etc?

Don’t miss this informative presentation on how the end user market has grown exponentially fueled by a compelling picture and audio advancements as a result of the new TV System.

The new UHD/HDR TV System has created the largest consumer demand for new TV purchases, which is far greater than the past two TV System upgrades where we moved from B&W to rec. 601 color in the mid fifties and the succeeding standards in 1997 when we moved from analog to digital Full HD with rec.709 color.

This presentation will discuss the advances in UHD that now include Dolby Vision HDR, HLG HDR, Technicolor HDR and HDR10 HDR, the new color gamuts, P3 aka DCI and rec.2020 as well as Electro Optical Transfer Function and 10-bit hardware panels.
while you’re at the show, an early Easter egg location for you to independently check out content using the different HDR mastering methods, i.e. HDR10Plus (color volume transform being based upon reference based numerical derivation) as compared to Dolby Vision (the color volume transform being based upon an adaptive tone mapping curve parameterized by the source content characteristics as well as manually set adjustments), HDR10 (static) and HLG.

ditto * thanks to you FilmFreakosaurus, for helping out with the responses to questions too as this thread tends to get quickly buried to the bottom of the heap with all the chit-chat from the player users.

Good you took the time.

Thanks for the shout out, but the fame and glory must be directed to you and the team of insightful insiders who are a wealth of info... even if I don't understand a quarter of the technical nuances and jargon bandied about.

Any other must see NAB show candy to consider? I'll be taking my first trip to the expo this year from the 24-27 and don't want to miss out on the good stuff. I probably won't be making it to the paid sessions, sadly, as this Vegas Vacation is already blowing my budget.
