^ That's very interesting.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if HDMI 2.0b will be a firmware update for TVs, or would it require new hardware?

Can't get my crystal ball to give a totally clear picture, but those of us with players and displays that get a Dolby vision firmware upgrade in the next 60 days may be going to 2.0b to pass the DV metadata???

Anyone with other thoughts, or crystal ball predictions?

Probably not the best tip, but the only option I've seen so far. The SONY UHD discs can enter a test-pattern mode if you hit 7669 (SONY) on the remote at the menu. Might at least help with setting brightness/contrast, but beyond that I haven't found any options (and I don't know if calibrators are even doing HDR yet)

According to Jeff Park, Technical Director of HDMI LA, a HDMI 2.0b / HDMI 2.1 firmware update is possible if the HDMI chipset was designed to be upgradable.

I believe Samsung updated their 2015 TVs from HDMI 2.0 to HDMI 2.0a, so 2.0a to 2.0b should also be doable. 2.1 would be nice too, but I'm less optimistic about that.

Unlike the previous experiment by some of the very same investigators who used 200fps recorded content as their source for the 100fps play out and testing…..

For those unable to attend, you can see the Sony press conference at NAB 2017 streamed live from Las Vegas on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. PST, which should include some connection to the topic of HDR, especially given last month’s announcement….. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post13405137

What TV do you have that you know you're getting a Dolby vision update within the next 60 days? I have a Sony XBR65X930E and am hoping for some news. It was announced that one is coming, but no date was given as far as I'm aware.

Sigh... it's not. It can actually show shadow detail and bright highlights in the same scene, as opposed to SDR.

Of course, any tool can get overused and colorists (like myself) are still learning to use it.

Can't speak for Spiderman, but everything I've seen in HDR (I've seen a lot of HDR content) has had a lot of shadow detail and superb highlight detail - sometimes in the same scene. Also, the colors look very vibrant yet realistic. Nothing fake looking about it.

I bet whichever screen you are using to see this comparison cannot represent black detail very well, unless you are using a decent HDR TV as your PC monitor So looking at the comparison on a PC will tell you nothing. How do you know the blacks are crushed for real, or it's just your monitor that cannot show them?

HDR panels are just better at showing black detail at lower brightness.

Anyway this has nothing to do with HDR really. They could have crushed the blacks in SDR too. It's up to the colorist.

The bottom line is that HDR can show much more detail on both dark and bright areas than SDR. Sometimes they screw it up, but it's not related to HDR vs SDR.

And, because I try to never forget about our British reader friends, to those of you who can’t make it out to the show in Las Vegas, as an alternative, this upcoming SMPTE session following NAB 2017 portends to be well worthwhile….https://www.smpte.org/sections/unite...d-hlg-post-nab . Non-member students can still get in free. If anyone plans on going, best not dilly dally in registering just in case it fills prematurely.

There will be updates (Dolby Vision Live, etc.) from Prin (of Dolby) and Tim Borer/Andy Cotton (of the BBC) on HLG.

That is a huge announcement and I guess Samsung decided to get this out before NAB. Also Samsung mentions in the press release that HDR10+ will be added to their 2016 UHD TVs.
