Psycho-Pass - IT BD / JP BD (Singles) / JP BD (2014 Box) / US BD / UK BD

https://slow.pics/c/Hh5NFjUu

The JP 2014 Box has a blanket dither noise applied to the entire video. The noise looks very dirty in darker colors.

US and UK BD do not share the same encode, but they are equally awful. Probably used the same encoder with similar parameters.

Opening 2 and end credits text are localized in Dynit BD. English text, except for the end screen which is in Italian. The localized text in Opening 2 is inspired by the original Japanese text and features animation. Much nicer than the generic crap in the Funimation version. I don't know if I'm going to splice in the JP OP/ED into my remux because the Dynit BD credits are good.

Dynit

For Demon Lord Dante, should I get the discotek set or the geneon pioneer dvd singles w/slip box, is there any noticeable difference in video quality?

The Discotek release is uncut while the Geneon DVDs are edited.

Oh, yeah. The Geneon version darkens/obscures parts of the image when there's violence and nudity. They released it like that, not realizing that they'd gotten censored masters from the licensor. When Discotek rescued it, we made damn sure ours were the uncut version :>

I dunno what it looks like either, I wasn't into that series.

The edited-version issue also happened with Media Blasters' release of Genma Wars, but I don't think that one ever got rescued.

A lot more watchable than the Funi BD for sure.
So the Japanese release is currently the least worst of the bunch? I see there's a budget released that drops down to 17000 yen every once in a while, a lot more than Funi's 39 USD release but oh well, it's Black Lagoon.

Yes.

Anime Limited picked up the UK rights. Hopefully their release will better than the Funi and Kazé releases.

That’d be a double dip.

Forwarding another test seen on some french community.
Judo Boy - Kurenai Sanshirō (Yamato Video & Koch Media, Italy)
Test page
Click on each photo to obtain an URL to a lossless PNG version.

Summary from the FB post:
Quote:
4.56 to 5 Go for each episode, 1080p24.
There are dust, scratches and white dots visible in the episodes but it is not particularly bothering.
Audio 2.0 DTS 1509 kbps for JP and IT tracks
They did not disclose how they had taken the captures. But it is probably via VLC.

You can definitely see artifacts in the first shot, in Sanshirō hairs as well as other shots, in strong reds for example.

I don't think VLC was used, otherwise the reds would have a lot of jagged edges.

Your forensic analysis supports what the owner of the page told me privately this very moment... but:

I don't use a media player software
So either direct from ffmpeg or HDMI captures. Or they just don't want to specify they're ripping the stream file by MakeMKV.
EDIT: It was the later :')

Quick question, is the UK Serial Experiments Lain blu-ray PQ better than Funimation or just a port?

If you want the best PQ for Serial Experiments Lain, the JP box set is the way to go. It's English-friendly. (or so I've heard)

The german release remain uninvestigated by the way. It should use the same master files as the FR/ES release but encoded by an entirely different authoring house. If handled properly it can be as good if not better.
But the JP set is only $100 or so nowadays, so you could always go for that.

I like what the Germans did with the Welcome to the NHK upscale BD, looks very good.
