Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - Discotek Media SDBD

Video seems to be mostly telecined, but there are definitely some 60i elements like text.

Forgot how bonkers the series was. It aired very briefly in the Netherlands before cancellation. Guess it was too much for Dutch kids lol.

There are still a number of Discotek titles from my recent haul that I want to take screencaps of. Dunno when I'll get around to them. Busy watching BDs and playing Switch games lately lol. Will make time for a comparison of Dynit's Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood BD when it arrives hopefully on Friday or Saturday.

Crying Freeman screenshots from a friend, it's 720p but I think it shows how good the underlying remaster is well: https://postimg.cc/gallery/FQsbm03
(I tried to keep it SFW but some are borderline)

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - Dynit BD vs various releases

Comparison
Re-used screenshots from another comparison. I left out the Aniplex USA screenshots since the encode is the same as JP BD Box. Do not know which FR BD was used (original or Edition Saphir re-issue)
Comparison of 2 additional screenshots of Dynit BD and original JP BD
Gallery

I haven't gotten around to watching a full episode yet, but I'm impressed by the image quality gains from the descale and rescale job, which negates the negative effects of an upscale done with a less than ideal kernel like bilinear. The picture is sharper, more detailed and with less aliasing too. It's good to see the technique being put to good use on an official release.

The set is region B locked with optional Italian subtitles.

Edit: I was told by someone that an improper descaling method may have been used that causes haloing, which seems to have been reduced with a dehalo filter after doing a nnedi3 upscale. This can cause problems with line detail.

I will say that despite any problems, I think the Dynit release still looks good overall and better than all previous official releases. There's still room for improvement however.

The source looks pretty decent for SD, miles better than the earlier Toei digipaints like Digimon. Imagine how this would've looked through AstroRes.

Important things to note about the FR releases of FMAB :
  • While the first episode here has correct gamma levels, this isn't the case for the whole series. I don't know when but at some point the show starts having wrong gamma levels, here on episode 50 for example
  • The encode seems to be the same between all FR releases of FMAB I've checked. I own the A4 collector's edition, the small sized complete box and the saphir collection discs (the only ones I haven't checked are the 2012 three individual box sets but discs should be the same as the A4 and complete box). The only difference I noted is that the Saphir release has 9 discs instead of 10, so it's missing the 4-koma theater shorts, the creditless OP/ED (which had the opposite issue of being darker than reference) and put the OVAs on the 9th disc instead.
  • The JP audio track seems to be faulty, the audio is very centered instead of making full use of the stereo format compared to the FR dub track and the JPBD original audio. Everything ends up sounding muted and lacking impact.
  • On the 10 disc sets, the 9th disc contains a 30s teaser for Afro Samurai which is simply the OP of the show, but in the BDMV itself there's actually a full episode as an m2ts file, it's just cut into a 30s playlist in the authoring

There's a new release of FMAB coming up because every other one is OOP but it will very likely reuse the same 10 disc format according to the listed specs on the editor's website

US BD of Tatami Galaxy is encoded at the wrong framerate (29.97).

The best release may probably be the french BD, if you do not care about the language.

So the US is the only Eng lang one with the OVA but encoded at the wrong frame rate...ugh. Never got the US release because I had the UK version, but didn't know about the OVA, crap.

Didn't know about the OVA/issues either. I watched it on Funi forever ago and bought the UK one since it seemed like we wouldn't get it and then bought the US one just to have.

Thank you for the feedback

I'm aware that the old perfect blue bd from 2015 is better than the newer one. I didnt know there was a 4k screening. Is it worth the wait?
There is a possibility i might find the fma (2003) collectors edition but i want to know if its an aniplex clone or at least of similar quality?
I found the Utena standard and CE bds 45% off (basically all the bds i listed have that discount thats why i want to buy them in bulk). Are they good, tho?

It's a clone of Funimation's Blu-ray. Not sure how it compares to Aniplex's but they use the same upscale.

I was under the impression that it was an aniplex clone for some reason. If its a funimation encode then it might not be a safe option. Thanks for the reply

Utena is a clone of the Nozomi release (just changed region coding), which afair uses the same encode as Japan...
So it's just a question of the prefered packaging

IIRC Outlaw Star had a different encode compared to Funi?
Silver Spoon also had some issues, but as it's DVD-only and OOP in other English territories there is no better alternative...
