Pirates (Roman Polanski, TF1/Quinta Communications)
Broken Flowers (BAC Films)
Bagdad Cafe (StudioCanal)
Barber, The (AKA The Man Who Wasn't There, BAC Films)
Sailor and Lulu (original release, BAC Films)

Small annonaynce and never a deal-breaker as I'll remove the subs with AnyDVD or rip the disc. Been doing this since 1997 (DVDShrink still removes forced DVD subs today) as many DVDs have this 'feature'.

I know the Oppo and some Philips allow the -almost- removal of the subs from the frame but I'm not aware of many machines (some Panasonics I think) that free this prohibition (like removing forced subtitles).

Updated.

I wonder why this kind of information isn't on movie overview pages? Is there someway to edit?

I'd like to see a note on each whether they are burnt in subs or not. Certain software can stop non-burnt in forced subs.

I feel like this list should be longer! lol

I'll look through my French titles that haven't been mentioned yet and report back later

Edit: I didn't see Crank (TF1) listed, but I believe it is as well

You can add "Scoop", Steelbook, TF1 Video, to the list. This Woody Allen Film has also forced subtitles when the English language version is selected (VOST, version originale soustitrée).

Do 'The Virgin Suicides' and 'Marie Antoinette' definitely have forced subtitles and not burnt in subtitles? I think I read they were burnt in before which is why I haven't purchased them.. If anyone could clarify these two in particular, that would be great!

While there are always exceptions, a general rule can be that TF1 and Wild Side releases will have forced French subtitles on non-French language tracks. This is due to licensing agreements.

On a related note, I can personally confirm that the French subtitles on the BAC Films release of Stir of Echoes (Hypnose) are removable.
