Default Zorro Reborn (reboot)

Is Zorro Getting Sent To The Future?

Quote:
Is Zorro going to be trading in his sword and horse, for a lightsaber and hoverboard? Well maybe not quite that drastic, but it's looking like he is heading into the future...

It's been just about 6 years since we saw Zorro on the big-screen with his last movie being 'The Legend of Zorro' starring Antonio Banderas as Zorro, and directed by 'Green Lantern' director Martin Campbell.

Well it's looking like the masked man is going to be making his return, with one major change, the time period.

LA Times is reporting that the new planned film will put Zorro in the future instead of his previous setting.

The reboot titled "Zorro Reborn" is being developed at Fox that will remove the character from his historical California or Mexico setting.
In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and "No Country for Old Men. The Zorro film is expected to provide a juicy lead role for a young actor.

Unlike many of the previous Zorros (real name: Don Diego de la Vega) brandishing whips and swords, the hero of the new installment will live in the future -- specifically a desolate and post-apocalyptic one, according to a person familiar with the film who asked not to be identified. A Fox spokeswoman declined to comment."

The script was written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the two screenwriters behind the upcoming Dracula reboot 'Harker'. Rpin Suwannath is set to direct, and don't worry if you haven't heard his name before, because most haven't. He's a 'previsualization specialist' who has worked on several 'X-Men' films, 'The Matrix', and 'Chronicles of Narnia'.

So what do you guys think? Do you think it's a good idea, or is it the start of a complete disaster? I love the Zorro character, the comics are great, the first movie was amazing, the second was ok, not great but a good popcorn flick. The idea of putting Zorro in a futuristic setting just seems odd to me, why even bother calling it Zorro?
Really like Zorro but this just sounds like a bad idea.

So how does he create the famous Z? With bullet holes? Or lasers?

So, this sounds like a very bad idea. I haven't seen the Zorro movies, but the guy belongs in Mexico. Taking him out of that is like taking Godzilla out of Tokyo, or putting The Smurfs in New York City (oh, wait...)

hmm if its one of those traditional post-apocalyptic films, it could work

but it would basically be the same as a traditional zorro film except there might be the odd pick-up truck or mutant

Agreed. Sorry, but this sounds awful. I'm a HUGE Zorro fan. I have all the movies, the old Disney series, the 90s series, the comics. I love the character. Part of what makes the character so interesting is the setting. Taking him out of that is a taking an essential part of the character. I'm not terribly surprised to hear Fox is the one behind this... This just has bad written all over it. I would have rather seen a sequel to Legend of Zorro.

Agree I love the 2 movies and the Disney series and like you I love the setting and that makes for a huge part of what Zorro is IMO. I am happy we got Legend of Zorro though years after the first movie and not a reboot/remake.

Take him out of his time period and setting and he isn't Zorro anymore. He's just a hero that (presumably) wears black.

I'll stick with The Mask of Zorro

WB tried doing that a few years back with Tarzan. A lot of the time removing these characters from the time frame they are usually in just does not work so well

Then there was them wanting to make a futuristic Robin Hood back in 2009.

Yea, I was too. This reeks of bad all over it. I won't support a reboot, let alone one that throws the source material out the window...

Agreed. It's not Zorro once you take him out of the setting. I'll stick with all the real versions. Not this fake knock off one.

I agree. Again, once you take certain characters out of their settings (Zorro, Tarzan, Robin Hood) it doesn't usually work. There are some exceptions, like BBC's Sherlock that is set in the 21st Century. But more often then not, things like this don't work because you miss the whole point of the character. Most of the time the specific setting is an influence on the characters. Taking that away damages the characters.

If you are talking about Zorro: Generation Z where he is in the future then yeah they want to make it like that. It's not a direct adaption but same premise pretty much.

It's similar, kind of. This will be the "hardened, dark version" of the character that studios seem so interested in lately...

Not surprised by this at all, could be a lot like a modern Count of Monte Cristo, see V for Vendetta.
