This is just my opinion, but I had an Onkyo and now a Pioneer, and I feel the Pioneer just sounds less processed in its sound, thus resulting in a richer and cleaner sound. I am a huge fan of the Elite's ICE amps. I am also a big fan of MCACC, Pioneer's calibration set-up. Audyssey is excellent too, but I have liked the add'l features that come with MCACC in setting up the receiver. The Onkyo does have one more HDMI-in, but I personally do not have 5 pieces of equipment I needed to hook up by HDMI to the receiver, so this point was a mute one for me. btw, what speakers will you be using? The Elite 21 recommends 8 ohms, but can do 6 ohms too. 4 ohm speakers that typically come with HTiB's are a bad idea on that Elite. I believe the 806 can handle 4 ohms though. I would recommend upgrading speakers along with the receiver, so my moneys still on the Elite
