When you insert a digital copy into the computer and right click on explore and look in the wmv folder theres 2 versions of the movie on the disc one version around 1.5gb which is obviously the pc version and another one at about 750mb saying PORT which i presume means portable the copy for your ipod.It would be great for disc space on my 8GB ipod if itunes put the correct version on your ipod but when you select sync it insists on always putting the larger file size on.Why is this smaller version of the film just sat on the disc doing nothing if theres no way of getting it on your ipod.Ive tried adding it to itunes libary nothing happens and tried playing it with itunes and it will only play in windows media player.

I don't know much about iTunes, but I do know that some digial copy discs offer you the option of both iTunes-compatible files and Windows Media Player files. Some discs may not have that option, so it sounds to me like this disc only has the Windows wmv files and not the Apple iTunes files.

The file compression scheme for iTunes compatible video is different than Windows Media compatible video.
iTunes uses the MP4 video format with the H.262 video codec which allows for better quality video but at the sacrifice of file size. These are generally 853x362 so file sizes will be at least 900mbs or more. According to Microsoft, the Windows Media Video format allows for better compression at the same resolution. Up to two times better compression then MP4 video. That is where the "difference" lies since the WMA compressions results in files that are around 500mbs or more. Just because you have a "small" screen doesn't mean you always have small files. You have a small MP3 player in the Shuffle and Clip and can easily get songs that are near to original uncompressed maasters but each song is going to take up a large chunk of space on that player. |
