Default Firefly Blu vs. Firefly DVD

Besides the obvious better image and sound whichi are the main differences between these two versions?

I have the DVD version and looking to upgrade but is it worth the $50 bucks or so for the same features or should I just wait?

Wait for what......? There won't be a better version coming out on Blu probably ever. If you want it in hi-def, upgrade. If you don't, don't. Seems simple to me.

I Agree if you want hi-def then buy the blu-ray if you don't then stick with DVD but soon DVD will go the way of batamx tapes when the VHS batamax wars was on

I am not sure I completely agree... Yes, I do think that DVD will likely stop being made in favor of BD...I don't think any of the studios (or retailers for that matter) like having to deal with offering movies in different formats...

But I think the key difference is that DVDs (at least for the foreseeable future) should always be conveniently playable and therefore useful and usable...

The fact that the BD physical format is still identical in physical size as the DVD, and the fact that all BD players play DVDs, means that the DVD you buy today will still probably be playable for years to come...

Beta and VHS on the other hand are different physical formats, neither of which have a current technology base to carry on and ensure player availability... I certainly do not have a Beta or VHS player in my house...

But even if BD becomes the standard and DVDs are never made again, you should still be able to play them... And I don't really think 480P is such a bad format (certainly not HD, but completely "watchable")...

Definitely worth the upgrade, especially if one is a Whedon fan and since it can also be had for under $40 at Wal-Mart.

The 1080p transfer looks great during the non-SFX shots, but remember, the SFX shots are up-converted from 480p as Firefly wasn't originally intended to be aired in HD (this was when FOX was broadcasting it's highest quality at 480p).

I thought it was very much worth the upgrade.

I dont think I would pay $50 for it though (I think I got it for the lower 30's)

Still..its how you roll if its worth it to you or not

Red face Roundtable discussion?...

Sorry for asking about this here, but there was supposed to be a rountable discussion on the blu ray and I cannot find it. I've checked every where I can think of, including special features. I feel stupid for asking, but I reallly want to see it. Can anyone tell me how to find it? Thanks. Also, I think you should def. wait until the blu ray gets to $20.00 and under IMO, it's not worth it otherwise, and I'm a HUGE fan of the show.

When is that supposed to happen? DVDs are out-selling everything. The future sucks.

Probably for the price to go down, maybe? I mean, right now it's $16.99. I heard it was down to $12.99 at one time. But, then again, this is over a decade ago...

Not worth the 50 bucks for the better picture quality. I would wait till you find it for 25 to 30 bucks. The sound from the DVD to the Blu-Ray is no big thing only the picture quality is better. So wait for a better price.

I don't think they re-mixed the sound for the Blu-ray they just matrixed it to 5.1 (And if they did re-mix they did not do a good job of it) You can matrix the Dvd with most receivers to 5.1 sound. To my ears I did not notice any big changes in sound from the blu ray to the DVD matrixed to 5.1 on my receiver.

Most of the scenes without FX look better than the DVD, but it's not a huge leap in quality. The audio was also marginally improved, but again Firefly is one of the only shows to realistically depict space travel(i.e. it's a quiet vacuum), so don't expect any major upgrade there either.

If you can get it for around 30 bucks or less, definitely pick it up. It has some new extras and it does look and sound better than the DVD. Plus it fits all the episodes on 3 discs.

The DVD isn't mono. It's always been in Dolby Surround 2.0 stereo.

I must say that the PQ was very good for a TV show for the HD scenes, much better than I anticipated. I also liked the refined grain field in addition to the detail boost. If you compare it to the DVD, the DVD looks like a blurry mess.

The audio was a big upgrade too, while not up to the same levels as, say, Serenity, it was much easier to understand the voices and the sound field was widened a bit, making for a bit more immersion. I got this for $38 used and it is as good as the show will ever look, so I'm happy.

I strongly disagree here. Sound quality is highly dependent on the system you use. Most TVs - even the expensive ones - have a poor enough sound quality. That's why you can't hear the difference if you use your TV's speakers.
To enjoy a real HD sound you need a good A/V receiver (not necessarily expensive, but not the cheapest either) and good speakers (those could be expensive enough if you really want good sound). And, of course, you need all of this properly set. You can get real HD sound either through HDMI or through analog output (if you use an old A/V receiver without HDMI). Digital output (either optical Tos-link or coaxial) won't do. Also BD player may downgrade sound quality with incorrect settings. Careful studying of user manuals usually provides enough information on how to make it all work properly.

Now about Firefly thing... Too bad it's locked to regions A and B. I'd very much like to buy it for any price, but I happen to live in Russia. It's unavailable for my region. The pirated DVD copy of less than average quality is all I have, because all legal copies are region locked. How I envy all of you.

Are you saying that you can't even get it as a legitimate SD DVD set? That really sucks.
