Plasmas and glare compared to Mitsubishi WS-55313? - Blu-ray Forum

I know generally speaking LCD's are supposed to be better for bright rooms. However, I'm tempted by Plasmas picture quality and price. Currently we have an older Mitsubishi 55'' rear projection HDTV, WS-55313.

Any idea if glare would be worse on a plasma compared to what we have now. We have a sunny room, with plenty of windows. During the day it can be tough to watch (depending on the weather and time of day), but we do most of our movies and extended viewing at night.

The point is, if the viewing wouldn't be worse when considering brightness and glare I might be more tempted to entertain a plasma purchase. If it's going to be worse than what I have now, I'll have to look into an alternative.

Worse? I don't think so, but it probably won't be any better like an LCD. If you can live with what you have, and watch most TV at night, then you should be fine with a good plasma. I've got 3, and the only glare problem I have is with the one in my living room during sunny days (lots of windows without blinds). Since it's really only watched at night, it's not that big of a deal.

About 18 months ago I went after the best 46" display I could buy and I was pointed to an LCD. So, I bought it. Today, my brother went into the same high end store that pointed me to the LCD and now they are saying that plasma PQ is far superior. No contest. Okay, I'm thinking... what about glare. The video boys are saying that the newer plasmas have dealt with glare issues to the point where it is no longer a concern. Neither is burn in.

Do some more research. It looks like plasmas are no longer to be afraid of. The best part is that most plasmas run cheaper than their LCD counter parts.

The problem is.... depending on where he does his research, he could just be gathering bad information!

Personally, I don't have a Plasma.... but greatly prefer them over LCDs....

If glare is a problem, and people tout LCD because you can watch it in direct light (I can't watch either of mine with sun coming through the windows....so I don't know where people get this whole "LCD can be viewed in bright rooms" crap from) I would rather put up a curtain to achieve the best possible PQ

Posted this in the general display forum, but no feedback so I thought I'd try here.

Basically I'm trying to find out if glare and picture brightness will be worse than my current set, the WS-55313 (older projection HDTV). Our room is full of windows and can be quite bright. However, it's something that we put up with now and unless the plasma is likely to be worse than what I have, I'd probably like to get one because of price and overall picture quality. Most of our main viewing is at night anyway.

I know that generall LCD's are usually better for bright rooms, but I'm partial to plasma. Anyone familiar with my current set, or something like it? It's got one of those screen protectors on it, and it's very reflective.

They say Laser TVs trump both LCD and Plasma in terms of quality. Mitsubishi controls the technology and have currently only one TV available, the 65" LaserVue L65-A90 which came out late last year.

Having recently come from an LCD to a plasma, I'm going to be honest and say that the glare is a little worse. Even with the anti-glare coating, I can see reflections much moreso than just the dull "light reflection" I got on the screen with the LCD.

However, the LCD had to have the light sensor turned on to up the brightness during the day, and I don't have to mess with that at all with the plasma. Between the better viewing angles and the brighter display I really don't have any issues with glare. I can see that it is worse but when I just watch the show it's not an issue at all. It was something I was concerned with as well since we have windows to the sides and behind my viewing area.
