OK so I started doing some research into a new reciever, namely the 1019 Pioneer or the Elite 03. So here's the thing, I read about a guy who bought an Elite 03 and when he set it up he wasn't getting any video to his TV via the hdmi cables...long story short, after calling Pioneer and some trial and error he was informed that because his tv is older and uses a DVI input rather than a hdmi input, the intermediary device (in this case his reciever), between the source, be it a BD player or his HD Sat box, interfered somehow and prevented the video from making it to his tv. This concerns me obviously as I too currently have an older TV that only has a DVI input. As I'm sure you can understand I don't want to spend $600 on a new reciever only to discover that I wouldn't be able to use it until I upgrade my TV down the road. Has anyone else ever heard of this happening before? Is it only with the Pioneer Elite stuff or is with any hdmi reciever?

I haven't heard about that problem for a few years now. the problem you read about likely stems from an issue with HDCP. HDCP is the copy protection protocol that is build into the HDMI communication path to stop us from copying digital content. Originally, it was not part of the DVI specs, but it was later added to the DVI specs to keep Hollywood happy.
I would check with the manufacturer of your TV to see if your DVI port is HDCP compliant, or see if the have a firmware upgrade that can make it so. |

It's a 2003 Sony 65" 1080i set- The thing I don't understand with that is why does it work with an hdmi cable directly from the source (a bd player), but when it's ran through a reciever's in and out hdmi ports- it then loses the video feed...someone help me understand this please.

1) The receiver is not HDCP compatible, so the television is blocking its video feed. 2) The receiver is not passing the HDCP signal properly, or is losing it somewhere along the way for some reason. 3) The television is losing its handshake when the receiver is connected, and cannot establish it through the receiver. This all basically pinpoint the receiver as the culprit, and though this is typically the case, sometimes it's simply a matter of establishing a handshake through direct connection, turning everything off, re-wiring, and turning everything back on to see if you can fool HDCP. I've had that work a few times. |

If the direct connection worked, there is no reason for it to not work when fed through the receiver. HDCP is a digital protocol and there is no reason for the receiver to interfere with it. It will be passed through the receiver same as the video digital signal.
Check for faulty cables. It is a possibility that the new receiver has a faulty hdmi port. Always sw off all components when you connect/disconnect hdmi. |
