I am off to buy my first blu ray player today and send away for my 5 free discs. Money is an issue as I don't want to drop more than $600 for a player. So I narrowed it down to basically the Sony BDP-S300 or a PS3. Now I am using this strictly for blu ray playback. I do not care about the games for PS3 or anything else but the BD playback. Now I need help picking one or if anyone has any other suggestions in my price range?

One thing to consider is the remote. If you like having one remote for all of your components, get the BDP-S300, since the PS3 operates via Bluetooth, and no universal remotes transmit in Bluetooth and IR or RF. That's the one drawback of the PS3, if one has to be named.

I would say get the ps3 from amazon.com if possible. If the remote issue is a big problem, get the other player. The PS3 has so so much to offer. You can stream music and video and pictures from your computer to your PS3, something that is not possible with the other. You can store video, music and pictures to your PS3 if you don't want to connect your PS3 to the internet. The PS3 will be updated and supported by sony for the next 10 years(or so they say) and you really don't know how long the other player will be supported(probably the same amount of time but you never know). The PS3 is a very very solid system and so far it even maintains its resale value, incase you fall on hard times and need some cash. In a few years there will be less equal but cheaper blu-ray players, but for right now, the PS3 is by far the best bang for your buck.

I would vote for the PS3 also. Aside from the remote control issue it is the best out there. Hands down!

I have a PS3 as my BD player, and have been more than happy with it. Have had no problems what so ever and every now and again I throw in Motorstorm or MLB '07 or Tiger, so if you ever want to play a game, you could.
I think the PS3 is the best choice you can make, and they have dropped the price by $100! |
