Default Sound Modes for Old PS3

Gday,
I've got the old PS3, which does the PCM and a Onkyo 806 Amp just wondering which sound setting for movies you would put it on seeing the old PS3 decodes DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD onboard without letting the amp decode it... it has mode called "Direct" which im assuming is the best? if anyone could shed some light on this for me or explain it that would be great!

Cheers

i have a ps3 & 806

make sure the ps3 hdmi out goes to 806 hdmi in

make sure your ps3 is set to LINEAR PCM for HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT

the 806 setting has to be MULTICH
when watching a blu leave it on MULTICH
multich = lossless audo setting when the ps3 is set to LINEAR PCM
if you use hdmi out on ps3 & use bitstream youll only get crappy lossy audio (dolby digital & reg dts)

if youre watching a 2 channel source (streaming from pc, some game videos downloaded from psn) the 806 will default to a PLII mode.....i use PLII game
but unless its a 2 channel source my 806 is set to MULTICH for everything else
even when i play madden 10 (no lossless audio) my 806 reads MULTICH

when using LINEAR PCM & MULTICH setting your ps3 sends a lossless audio signal (pcm, dolby true hd, ts master audio) to the 806 already decoded thus the MULTICH setting

now if you had a new 'ps3 slim' you could use the ps3 hdmi output and set it to bitstream and then your receiver decodes the audio and you get to see the receiver to say dolby true hd, dts ma etc

either way its the same end result and NO difference in sound

Thanks for the info guys, i had a fair idea that was the case.
DonRSD i use THX Cinema setting sometimes for movies etc, do you reckon that is giving lossless?

Just waiting on getting a Subwoofer and centre speaker for my system to finish it off. I ran some speaker wire for outdoors speakers controlled by the Zone 2 function on the amp, it works well just trying to get the PS3 to output its sound through the zone 2 terminals (i think the amp can only did it if its coming from an analogue source not digital).

Had any dramas with your 806? mine seems to be running really well so far, Running Klipsch Reference speakers.

Cheers

no problems so far with my 806. its about 10 months old

as far as THX CINEMA why use it for?
just use MULTICH setting and youre set to go with any lossless codec thats thrown the 806 way

using THX Cinema for lossless is like using PLII Movie mode when something is DTS MA or DOLBY TRUE HD (lossless audio)......why miss out on the best part of the lossless audio by choosing a NON-lossless setting? (thx cinema)

everything for my ps3 is set to MULTICH.....even when i stream music from my laptop.

re-watch a movie you JUST watched/listened to in THX Cinema but with MULTICH setting on your 806.......youll understand what youre missing out on

and post some pics of your HT in your profile page
