I saw the US theater version, and while entertaining it felt incomplete with a somewhat abrupt ending.

Yeah, it's coming to the US. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030A6ID0

I wonder if we'll get a Mandarin 7.1 track or a Mandarin 5.1 track. I noticed that the UK version has Mandarin: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Red-C...y-Review/6761/) whereas the HK releases have Mandarin: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, Mandarin: LPCM 7.1, and Mandarin: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio tracks. Why not just port over one of the 7.1 tracks instead of creating a new 5.1 track?

Anyone know the version differences between the UK, USA and 2 Canadian versions at Amazon? Screen ratio and time vary a little. Any suggestions for which one to purchase?
I've approved it and edited in links/cover/some info.

Red Cliff Blu-ray special edition

Amazon.com:

Red Cliff Part I & II Blu-ray international version

Amazon.ca:

Red Cliff Part I & II Blu-ray international version (Amazon.ca import of the US above ^^)

Red Cliff Blu-ray extended cut (La falaise rouge )

Aspect ratios are different and length times vary a little. Can anyone share some light on these?

Also just for the record, it sucks not being able to post amazon links. There are clearly 2 version at the .CA site but without posting, who is really going to search and get us a reply?
I haven't seen the actual discs except for the review of the UK one, but they should all be in Scope format. The small length differences could be due to the UK cuts, amazon/back cover typos/PAL speedup listing errors, other.

And for the record one can post Amazon links in this site, you just couldn't post links. (You can now)
btw Amazon.ca Search

Question

I'm confused...

The USA version
"Red Cliff Part I & II Blu-ray
Chi bi / International Version"

...which runs 288 minutes total is or is not the most extended version of this particular film?

Is this the version I should buy or which is recommended? Will be a blind buy here.

It's the full version that was originally intended. The US theatrical cut is only 148 minutes long, and that's an edit of BOTH films.

288 is the complete version , there is a 284 minute version that cuts out a few horses falling , as for the 148 min. US version what a sacrilege that must be.

Although I won't bother with the 148 min. version, apparently John Woo cut that version himself for foreign markets (US, UK, etc. ). So it wasn't a hack job assigned to a third party.

Forget how they title it, that's where the confusion comes in. The runtime is what you're looking for. The International Cut has been said to be ~5 hours, right? So what is 288 minutes? 4 hours 48 minutes. Close enough for CBO scoring, eh?

The full international version is on VUDU for $13.99, the physical is a little cheaper at 13.xx so I'm going to go with that since it has the long documentary.

I tried watching the US version on Netflix, but I hated the voiceover.

So hopefully I like it since I almost never blind buy.

I picked up the full international edition spread across 2 BD releases way back when Blockbuster video was practically giving them away many years ago. It's all sorts of long but is a film I enjoy re-visiting every so often. I can say that I've watched the full epic probably as many times as I have The Lord of the Rings films.

Not that I've heard, and I am not sure it's terribly likely to happen either unfortunately. Sure hope I am wrong though. This was one of the great epic film(s) of its time.

There were a number of two-part historical movies made around this time, which is interesting. Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale is probably not as remembered but also worth the time. Che is probably better known being a Soderbergh title.

Hadn’t heard of Warriors of the Rainbow! Thanks for mentioning it!

Another one to mention. Gangs of Wasseypur came out a year after Che. I love it and would mention it with Red Cliff and Che.

Wasseypur has escaped me and I've never gotten around to it. Sadly I think the US Blu-ray is out of print now.

Regarding WotR, definitely pick it up on Blu-ray; I think it's still readily available. At least at the time it came out (2011), it was the most expensive Taiwanese film made. Now that doesn't make it "good", but gives you an idea of the scale of the production and its ambition.

Like Red Cliff, make sure you get the the two-part, full-length story. At 4.5 hours it's a lot of story, but a powerful account of history. There's a US cut released as one movie which slices something like two hours off the runtime. Might make it fun to have for a comparison sometime (I have both cuts to feel complete yet haven't watched the US cut ), but I would be shocked if anyone thought it was actually the better experience. Well Go USA labels the original, full-length version as the "International Cut".

Let us know what you think if you get it!
