Default Best of The Decade: Nominate Your Favorites

I’ve seen other sites and publications adding up “best of the decade” lists so how about we join them? This will just be the nomination process. We will do nominations until Christmas Eve at 12PM ET. On Christmas Day we will start voting for each category until New Years Day when the winners are announced.

For each category you may nominate AT LEAST FIVE and UP TO TEN selections. I will figure out a little later how we decide which get in, as it will depend on how popular this becomes. Remember these votes are reflecting from January 1, 2000 – December 24, 2009.

The categories are:
Best Motion Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Musical Score
Best Animated Feature
Breakout Star [can be an actor, actress or director]
Best Blu-Ray/HD DVD/DVD Release

I feel those 8 categories are enough and will give us a good indication of the best from the decade.

the decade isn't over till the start of 2011. Just like the 21rst century didn't start till 2001. We start at 1, not 0.

This is from Wikapedia - A decade is a period of ten years. The word is derived (via French) from the Late Latin decadem, accusative of decas, from Greek decas, from deca. The other words for spans of years also come from Latin: lustrum (5 years), century (100 years), millennium (1000 years). The term usually refers to a period of ten years starting with 0 and ending in 9.

'nuff said - Lets Do it

Agreed. The people that argue that the decade goes from 1-0 instead of 0-9 are absolutely crazy.

Breakout Star

1) Sam Mendes (director--American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road)

2) Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls, The Sea Inside, No Country for Old Men

3) Penelope Cruz (Volver, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Abre Los Ojos, Vanilla Sky, Elegy)

4) Todd Field (director--Little Children and In the Bedroom)

5) Joe Wright (director--Pride and Prejudice and Atonement)

As you can see, I think there are some great directors that came out in this decade that we will really have to watch for in the near future, especially considering the projects each are working on.

Yes I'm absolutley crazy. Apparently then so is the American school system. You can go ahead and look up year 0 all you want. It doesn't exist. 1-100 is the first century. 101-200 is the second. 1901-2000= 20th century.

You can insult me all you want. Anyways. I'll play along.

Best picture:
Hmm. That's a challenge. I'm gonna go with A Beautiful Mind. Maybe. I don't know.

Best actor
Leonardo DiCaprio.
Best actress
Jennifer Connely
Best score
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix
Best director
Peter Jackson
Best animated:
Spirited Away
Breakout star:
Michael C Hall
Best blu:
I'm gonna go with Wall-E. It has 5 star everything. It's certainly not my favorite blu, but it's the complete package.

Such arguments is what make the film Idiocracy so terrifying. As the human race is actually heading in that direction. I will vote for my favourite of the decade once I can make an informed decisions (even if it did end this year there are several films that are still to come out). In any case, I hope you enjoy your first 9 years of a decade awards.

In any case I couldn't pick just one film, so far my list would be Amelie, Avatar, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Let the Right On In (in alphabetical order, not in preference).

Motion Picture (not in order)

1) The Lives of Others

2) Downfall

3) Hotel Rwanda

4) LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring

5) Amelie

6) In the Bedroom or Atonement

7) American Beauty (it was a 1999 film but won the Oscar in 2000)

8) Traffic

9) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

10) City of God

11) Up (if American Beauty doesn't count)

It's funny, only one of the above films won Best Picture, and half of the films are foreign.

Nice list! I find that usually the best films never win best picture haha

Thank you! I think it's 50/50 for me. Either the film that I think is the best of those nominated wins, or the film that I think is the best of the year is not nominated (i.e. Hotel Rwanda).

1) The Lives of Others
i think i've said enough on this one of the greatest films i've ever seen

2) Downfall
haven't seen it i know...i'll admit i've been too "blu-focused" (this is DVD, right?)

3) Hotel Rwanda
great film, haven't seen in since release so need to watch it again. i remember having HUGE expectations and it not coming through (put schlinder-type demands on it)

4) LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
I love the LOTR trilogy, but in the past 5 years i've just been more attracted to drama/foreign/classics. although some of the LOTR films dragged or had cheesy hobbit parts, overall i thought they were great, and i agree they probably deserve a spot on the list, if for nothing else than significance.

5) Amelie

didnt see it another non-blu..wow i've been way too blu-focused LOL

6) In the Bedroom or Atonement
didn't see it ok ok i've got my work cut out

7) American Beauty (it was a 1999 film but won the Oscar in 2000)
great film, its been forever since i've seen it. need to revisit.

8) Traffic
definitely one of the best i've seen this decade. del toro's performance was terrific, as well as douglas'. i loved how this movie shows how nobody is immune to drugs, hence why stereotypes are meaningless (like requiem..another contender)

9) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
saw this in 2000, when my movie tastes were much difference, need to revisit.

10) City of God
on my list, so just love it. the low shot of the chicken being chased through teh streets of rio is unforgettable. what a perfect film, and it really outshone U.S. equivalents like boyz n the hood IMO. the cinematography/direction cant be touched.

11) Up (if American Beauty doesn't count)
loved it, great film. although i did prefer coraline (perhaps b/c it was a little less "kiddy" and more darker)

It's funny, only one of the above films won Best Picture, and half of the films are foreign.

I bought it on dvd at barnes and noble about 2 months ago for $5, just to get me through until the domestic blu. I've stated before that I think Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler is the best acting performance [I]of all time.[I]

As for In the Bedroom, I didn't think I would like it. All I have to say is wow. The acting as a whole might be the best I've seen this decade (Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, and Marisa Tomei were all nominated). Just when you think it's going one direction, your expectations are shattered and it goes somewhere even better. I also love Atonement despite not liking it the first time I saw it. The tracking shot on the beach of Dunkirk is one of the best tracking shots I've ever seen, and done in only four takes. I consider the snub of Joe Wright for best director to be one of the top 2 or 3 biggest snubs in history.

Im with you Jhiggy foreign films rock! I tend to be watching way more of them now a days because IM findng American films are a ton of crap and awful remakes (what they did to Hitchcocks Rear Window with Shia pissed me off)

Please do not start this again! Anything that starts between 2000 and 2009 is the decade for films. Just like when Roger Ebert stated that Raging Bull was the best film of the 80s and it came out in 1980. So please stop all this nonsense.

A. I never started it before. B. Read the rest of the thread. It's been dropped.

I'll go through and make a top ten for each here soon.
